ON THE WRONG SIDE.
Chilian Minister Patrick Egan seems
to have made the very un-Irish mistake
In the late Chilian imbroglio of not be
ing on the side of the revolting party.
Everybody recognizes the thorough sec-
tionality of the following true Irish
story:
As an European steamer was being
swung into position at the wharf in
New York, it was observed by the pas-
sengerfc that a big row was g°ing on be
tween the dock-laborers and the police,
just alongside. Just as the gang plank
touched the ship’s side a burly Irishman,
fresh from the Emerald Isle, sprung

Enquircr-Suu is after the scalp of a para-
grapher on the Chattanooga Evening
News, for alluding to him as the “bril
liant epauletted warrior from the sands
of Tybeo who novor smelt the fumes of
gunpowder in his life.”
The crime committed by Editor Itich-
ardson was an editorial sustaining the
04 who voted against the Confederate
soldiers' home bill.
Ex-PniikmjST U. S. Hall of the Mis
souri Farmers' Alliance is priming his
guns for a war against the sub-treasury
and third party movements. He has
sent a circular to every eaunty Alliance
In this state and anti-sub-treasury lead-
-ers in other states, asking thim to call a
meeting of the antis ns soon as possible
and elect three delegates to the national
meeting of the anti-sub-treasury wing, to
be held in St Louis Sept. 15.
Tiie Savannah Hews well puts It;
“How that the Livingston railroad regu
lating bill has been Introduced into
both the House and Senate, wbat Is ths
use of wasting any more time on the
Bearner lease smashing measure? There
la no purpoae to pass both bills The
railroads will certainly be happy when
this legislature scrapes the mud ot At
lanta from its feet and makes tracks to
ward Its cotton patches and corn fields."
Thc Times-Rkcoudeb received yestcr•
day the Albany Hewi and Advertiser for
the last six days all In one batch; and a
subscriber in the, city reported that hit
came the tame way. One mail a week
from Albany Is indeed a fine service, Is
the explanation,that Smithville holds the
malls over there to fumigate them, aud
see whether the wicked Times-Recoii-
deb or Hews and Advertiser say any
thing naughty about the health of their
half-way neighbor?
It la gratifying to know that the acting
comptroller of currency has decided that
there is no necessity for the appoint
ment of a receiver for the Farley nation
al bank, of Montgomery, Ala. Tide sus
pension waa in reality the rosulc of a
scare arising from the Moses failure;
naJ now that it is over, our neighbor
can get on solid ground again and re
coup her losses. Americas extends the
lieartlort sympathies to Montgomery,
aud wishes her ,-pccdliy returning pros
perity.
'Tan Tjjibs-Kecgbdkb has made it a
teat from which to preach more than
once that it is the duty of our people to
stand up to and patronise homo institu
tions, industries and enhAiriscs. Hor
should this good maxim be violated ex
cept for good and sufficient cause, wjiorc
the homo concerns have not or cannot
get what is wanted at anything like a
parity of prices. Do to others as you
would have them do to you; help your
friends and neighbors, and thus enable
them to help you. Stick up to Aroeri-
cus if you desiro to see Americus pros
per.
A rnr.'JC.vt.of the advertising columns
of Tub TiuEs-liEcoiuiKit will show who
the ltvo merchants are In Americus; and
a merchant who don't advertise is by
popular Judgment classed as a moss-
back. Hence the latter are getting left,
because the people consult tbo news
papers to see who aro in the market
with bargains for any class of goods
wanted. Anybody can go from store to
store in Americus this morning snd
pick out those who advertise from those
who don't, simply by tha crowd of cus
tomers at their counters. Tha columns
of Tub Tuus-Reoobdeb are a safa
guide; and nobody knows this better
than the trading public.
to appoint guardians for the families of
dead soldiers; to securo pensions
for worthy men without the pay
ment of fees, and to guard against fraud
and to have cancelled every fraudulent
certificate that has been Issued. Tito
objects of the society are praiseworthy,
but it will have to contend against awful
odds, because it will have arrayed against
it the Republican party, who wants the
votes of the pensioners, whether deserv
ing or not; the army of ponsion attor
neys who want the foes, and, finally, a
half million or more of alleged veterans
who are willing to take all the money
that they can force out of the govern
ment in the way of pensions.
OcB cotton shippers whose export cot
ton will go through Savannah are deeply
Interested In its handling there, and will
be in full sympathy with tbe feelings of
the Savannah people as expressed In
their .action In relation to the removal of
Mr. W. W. Starr, the best railroador in
the South. A special from Savannah
says: “The news of the, removal of Su
perintendent Starr was received with in
tense dissatisfaction by the business
men $f-this city and seotlon. This net
of the Richmond A Danville officials Is
regarded as directly prejudicial to the
business Interests of the eity.. Coming
at tbe opening of the cotton season,
when, with even the most eapable man
agement considerable trouble is frequent
ly experienced, the removal of an official
who had demonstrated bis ability- to
overcome all difficulties so well as Mr.
Starr has, could not fall to create alarm
among those directly sffeated.”
The Hew York Herald saye: “How
thoughtful it was of Frank Almy to bo a
Yankee Instead of a Southerner! Had
tbe fellow lived somewhere in the South,
killed bis iweetheart and shot one of his
pursuers, been ohssed by several hun
dred men inclined to lynch him, bid
himeelf In a barn under twenty feet of
bay and threatened to sell his life desrly
snd then shoot himself unices guaran
teed protection, what a deal we would
be obliged to hear about a charaoterietlo
Southern Incident! What scornful fun,
too, would be made of forniing the pur
suers in double line so that they all
should have a good look at the prisoner!
But ail this did not occur down South.
Hew Hampshire was tko sccno of tbe
holy terror's exploits, no was not a
rough backwoodsman, but a fellow who
surprised college students by tbe extent
of his classical knowledge. Tbo South
lias Us innings."
A San Fka ncifco dispatch says tiro
insurgents having won in CUl'i, there is
a strong probability of an insurrection
in Mexico. Diaz, it is claimed, U not
more popular iu. Mexico than Ualmaceila
was In Chili, and tbero is a strong feel
ing against him throughout Mexico.
And the people aro particularly bittor
against Diaz because be married an
American Protestant, But Diaz will
not be taken by surprise should there be
an outbreak. lie understands tbe situa
tion thoroughly, and at tbo first sign of
trouble bis army would be on the more,
and be will suppress it with an iron
hand, tinlcs it starts oil with more
formidable proportions than the average
Mexican or South American rebellion
possesses.
It does not require any remarkable
degree of political sagacity to see that
the issue for tbe Democracy to win on
uext year is the tariff. On thatquestlon
the party baa been fighting for a number
of years, are solidly united, and have just
come to fully undersand it. Appreci-
ating all thia, the Republicans have al
ready shown a determination to divide
the iaaue, and although Mr. McKinley ia
the author of the present tariff law and
the representative of that issue, in Ohio
they have pushed the silver question to
the front and are striving to make that
the head and front of the canvass. The
Democrats are standing by the tariff
mainly and will elect Gov. Campbell
this year and a Democratic president
next yew.
the confederate home
The Chattanooga Times says: “The
Georgia press is fearfully severe on the
legislature for its narrow and mean con
duct in rejecting the olfer of the Sol
diers’ Home. Tito Augusta Chronicle, a
journal noted for moderation, good
sense, conservatism and independence,
says:
“The defeat of the bill to accept for
the state of Georgia tbe Soldiers' Home
in Atlanta was a gnat mistake. It cre
ated a shock all over tbe state, it was a
surprise to tbe people, who believed that
their representatives would show this
substantial token of appreciation for the
men who periled life and limb, who lost
their fortunes and their health in the
service of their country. It was a great
mistake to put it* ban upon the worthy
proposition. Ho organization can af
ford to antagonize the sentiment which
is back of this enterprise, for it is a
cause deeply entwined In the hearts of
the people.”
Tbe Chicago Inter-Oeean says: “Tbe
Inter-Ocean lias no sympathy with any
such cheese-paring economy. Hor have
we respect for a legislature so devoid of
humane sentiment or of a moral princi
ple.”
Quick Time.
Hew Yobk, Sept. 2.—The mail from
China and Japan which left Yokohama
August 10 was safely delivered on the
steamship City of Hew York in Hew
York harbor at 5 o’clock Wednesday
morning, September 2, and is now on its
way to England. August 20 the Empress
of India arrived at Vlotoria, B. C. There
a special train was furnished by the
Canadian Paeific railroad, which took
the mail bags (twelve for England and
six for Hew York), and started on a rec
ord breaking ride across the continent,
which was accomplished in three days,
reaching Hew York in the time stated.
An Atlanta letter says: “An old
farmer saw the capltol in Atlanta yes
terday for the firsi time. ‘That's a
pretty good stable for a lot of jackasses,'
he remarked. How, If Hill of Merri-
wetber had only heard him?’ Or even
