THE AMERICUS DALLY TD1ES-REC0RDER: SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 1891. THE TIMES-RECORDER. Dully and Weekly. fd.00 Till: STATE# AM) MARRIAGE. Tlie American Bar Association lias taken uj> tlie niovemnnt officially begun l.v N'cw York to secure uniform State laws of marriage ami divorce. The desirability of Home approach to uniformity in this matter is made obvi ous every day both in the courts and in the newspapers, but the road to its ac complishment seems a very long one, j beset with difficulties. The trouble lie* in the prevalence of widely varying views, not. of polity only Ameririis. ^tit 0 f and wrong, in the several Araoricus, Ga., 8opt. 5, 1891. I States. This is equally true in time of peace and in time of war. The political situation is, to say the least, critical. Momentous questions are before the public. Thanks to our republican form of government, these are not of war, but of peace. It be hooves all good citizens, all good Dem ocrats, because there are none other than Democrats in the state of Georgia, ex cept an alien and iuferior race, to rally, to reason, to consult. This cannot be done without organization. The mailed hand of monopoly is pressed hardest upon the throats of the people of the South. Ingenious and corrupt officials have seeu tit, by the use of the doctrine of hate, to in flict upon our people most odious, op pressive aud damning laws. These laws were passed, not from any principle of political economy, not front any desire, to use the words of the Constitution, “to promote the general welfare,” but to further the selfish and extortionate aims of corporations and bloated bond holders It behooves Georgians; it behooves all Democrats to be upon tlie alert; It be hooves all lovers of the Immortal princi ple of “equal rights to all and special privileges to none," to organize, to enlist in the great work of repelling corporate power and corporate rascality. This is peculiarly true of the Democracy of this, essentially an agricultural region. It is therefore with great pleasure that we call the attention of the young Democrats of Americus and Sumter county to the fact that a meeting should be held as requested by numbers of young Democrats of this county on Wednesday next, the Oth Inst, at such time aud place as may hereafter bo de termined, for the purpose of organising a Young Men's Democratic Club. To this meeting we are authorized to state that whilst older heads will not be re futed admittance, and will be cordially welcomed, especially and earnestly are invited all young Democrats between the ages of 21 and 35 years. This Is Intended to be a vigorous campaign club, to use it* utmost en deavors to maintain Democratic princi ple! and Caucaaalan supremacy. In the young men of the south In 1691, as well as in the young men of the south in 1801, the one in peace, whilst the other was In bloody war, Is our chief hope and our main reliance. Let the young men organise. It has the enthusiastic endorsement of Tub Timbs-Rkcobdxr, and it only hopes that the example may be followed by the young Democracy of every county in the state. The members of the Georgia legisla ture who voted against the bill author ising the state to accept the home for the Confederate veterans, are beginning to hear from their constituents and to feel the force of public opinion. It Is said that they will introduce a bill pro viding that the counties shall pension disabled and indigent soldiers at the iate of one hundred dollars a year; but such action on their part will only In crease the disgust. In which they are held by the people, because so small a pension will not givo the old veterans the comfort of a home such as that which was built for them by popular subscription and which the legislature of the state refused to accept nnd main tain. The people of Georgia should spit upon the men who, by their votes, charge* -te. Illinois and Dakota, where tlie popula- j ^ebarawTlbSk 18 * tion is more varied and tendencies to radical experiment in tlie name of prac tical common sense are stronger, divorces aro granted for numer ous causes, some of them trivial. In one state marriage is held to be so saacred that It can be contracted only by solemnly prescribed forms and cannot be dissolved at all; in another the fact of marriage is recognized Irrespective of ceremonies, and its dissolution is deemed better than its continuance. The subject is complicated because It is regarded variously as a solemn relig ious sacrament by some, as a matter of social polity by others, and as a mere contract of convenience by still others. Its ordering is determined by the pre vailing view in each state as to whether it is the concern of religion, of the state, of society, or only of the individuals con cerned. These varying views are reflected in the widely varying laws of the several states, and every attempt to secure uni formity of legislation upon the subject must encounter strong convictions as a very serious obstacle.
