Farwell, of Chicago, congress was induced to appropriate a small sum of money for an experiment in rain making in the arid regions of this coun try, the wits and paragraphers of the press made all manner of fun of the Il linois senator. Now the laugh is with that statesman and those who had faith In his projects. Tills was to employ dynamite or somo other powerful ex plosive, at a high altitude, to bring to gether the different currents of the upper air strata. Some of these are warm and laden with moisture, while others arc it IS A Georgia N •.ME.’ dry and cool. When theso currents The perp'cxinc problem In America, for i meet and mingle, the moisture in the some time has heentlie naming of tne hand- [ first is condensed and falls to the earth. Such was the theory of the advocafi some nr w ho’et. 'i lie agony I, it will be called "the w ludsor." A Georgia name of some kind would have been belter. —Columbus Enquirer-Sun. What is the matter witli the Knqulrer- Sun that it is not acquainted with its own state, and more especially with the people of the metropolis of Southwest ern Georgia, which distinction Americus proudly claims and sustains. The Hotel Windsor is a native born Georgia name. It is a name that has done much for Americus, and especially has it been connected with the erection of our magnificent new hotel. The “Hotel Windsor” is named in honor of Mr. John Windsor, cashier of the People's National Hank of Americus, secrotary and treasurer of the Americus Improvement Company, which has built the hotel, and In many other ways con nectcd with the growth and prosperity of the city. In honoring this distin guished citizen the hotel company had no thougnt of the old English Windsor Castio, hut desired only to pay a just tribute to one who has bent his best energies in building up Americus. The now hotel, which is tbo pride of all Americus, is named in honor of Mr. John Windsor, of Americus, Ga. Last week Mr. Irving W. Soott, prcsl -dent of the Union Iron Works of .San Francisco, which built the United Stntes Cruiser Charleston, and Mr. C. If. Cramp, the Philadelphia ship-builder, returned from a tour of inspection of all the great ship-yards in Europe. In an Interview published in the New York Press, Mr. Scott said: “I visited the great ship-yards of Hamburg, Barrow, Belfast and Glasgow—that is to say, the Dutch, English, IriBh and Scotch yards. They aro not much ahead of the United States, oxcept In a few modern Inven tions, No one of the yards I visited Is as largo, complete and perfect as the sblp-ysrd at Newport News, Va., which is principally owned by C. P. Hunting- ton.” Newport News, Va., and the whole South oan afford to do some boasting over having the world's finest ship-yard. CnARi.EV Foster, the secretary of the treasury, who Is trying to braco up the falling fortunes of McKinley In Ohio, made a statement to the effect that the Republican party Is a party that does things. That Is exactly wbat is the matter. The Republican party does and has done things which has caused the people to array themselves against it with a firm determination to wipe up the face of the earth with It next No* vember. Among the things that It has done which are still fresh In - the public mind was the looting of the Treasury, the passage of the inlquitious McKinley bill, tbo voting of subsidies, and kindred measures, and the voters of the country will remember these things wheu they go to tho polls. It is with pardonable pride that Tiie Tiues-Uecoruer points to the enthusi astic responso of the Young Democracy of Sumtor county to the call in these columns, in Saturday’s issue. It shows plainly that there are no milk-and-cidcr Democrats within the county's coniines. On tho other hand, those who aro Democrats here are simon- pure Bourbon Democrats. There Is no doubt bat that the meet ing next Wednesday night will he as on- tbusioatie ns could be wished, and The Twkh-Kecoruer would again urge am. young and old Democrats to attend. Lieut. Gov. Joxes of New York, after discovering that it was impossible for him to get the Democratic nomination for Governor of that state, has decided to run os an Independent. Tbqro will, however, be a very small following be- hind the Jones banner, and when tho votes are counted the chilling winds of defoat will whistle through his waving whiskers. The Republicans may imag. ins that Jones' candidacy as an Inde- pendrut will divide the Democrats, but they will discover their error. rain-making. Within a fortnight prac tical tests have been made In Texas and New Mexico, and the truth of the hypo thesis established. The experiments ordered by Congress wore intrusted to the Department of Agriculture, which gave them in charge to (ien. R G. Dykrenfiirth. That gen tleman selected Midland, Texas, for the first experiments, and there ho arrived week before last witli a party consisting of I'rofessor Edward Rowers, of Dela- van, Wis., civil engineer; Dr. C. A O. Roseil, chemist; Professor George E. Curtis, Smithsonian Institute, meteoro logist; John T. Ellis, secretary; Paul A. Draper, electrician; two balloonists, and a large number of assistants. The ranch of Nelson Morris, compris ing 300,000 acres, on which no rain had fallen for six weeks, was chosen for the trial. This is a vast prairie, over which the winds aro continually swooping. There a shed was built, in which the oxybydrogen gas was rnado and the bal loon inflated. Three classes of experi ments were made. One was tho explo sion on the earth of giant powder and rend-rock bombs; the second,of sending to a lofty height large cloth kites, heavi ly loaded with dynamite cartridges. These were exploded by an electric cur rent sent to them through the wire used Instead of a kite string. The third tvas by balloons charged .with oxybydrogen gas, exploded at a height of 5,000 feet. A copious rain followed close after the first explosion; It continued several hours over a large area. Four other ex periments were made, and wore attended by similar results.—Manufacturers Rec ord, NEW: GOODS AT- nounce wish the ladies that our store room is neariug completion and in a few days *ve will be able to exhibit the finest line of Notions, Novelties, Etc., in the city. Dirt was broken In Rome this week for the new Masonic building, which is to be a very handsome structure. The Marietta Journal suggestively re marks that “there Is a town in Califor nia named Gimletvllle, but all the bores do not live there.” Lumpkin Independent: The cater pillars have now appeared on uplands, and aro reported to be in many aectlons of the county. Two old Confederate muskets were found- near the Dalton cemetery the other day. They wore both loaded, though the stocks had entirely rotted off. They were probably abandoned there twenty-eight years ago.
