Whatever good the Republican party may have done, posterity will never for get the wicked high tariff it fastened upon the country, shackling our com merce and robbing poor men. The New York Sun nominates Editor Elliot F. Sheppard for secretary of war, vice Proctor, llis peculiar fitness for the position lies in the fact that lie has npver yet been found fit for anything else. DEMOCRACY TO-NIGHT. | 1 HE ORIGIN OF THE “COCKTAIL ” j To-night at 8 o’clock the young; The title of our most popular drink democracy will meet at the opera house drink comes from Mexico. Tbe Aztec j If it were not for the necessity of rais ing a big campaign fund, the Republi cans would let the high tariff go to pot. There is hardly a Republican anywhere who doesn’t kuow what a humbug a high tariff is The statement issued by the census bureau giving the increase of wealth in 1880and 1800 show's that there was44.fi increase in the south on real and per sonal property and only 4:1.2 for the rest of the country. Every body is expected to come out, whether their uames are on tbe list circulated for signatures or not. It must not be supposed that only those who have so far signed the list are to participate. It has been Impossible to see every one, but it must be under stood that the doors of tbe democratic fold are open to all, and all are expected to be present, and not only join tbe pro cession now, but be ready to work for victory when work must take the place of hurrah. So let everybody come out to night, and give such an enthusiastic ex hibition of their earnestness that the bonds of the simon-pure will be strengthened all over tbe land. NICKNAMES OF THE NEW STATES. Only four of the six states created within the past two years have nick-; names, so far as we have heard. These ! are the Dakotas, Montana and Washing-j for other pur ton. North Dakota has been dubbed Hn ,i city the Flicker-tail State, South Dakota the Swinge-cat State, Montana the Stubbed- 1 toe State, and Washington the Chinook I Siajni State.—St. Louis Globe-Demo word for pulque is pronounced much like octail, and Gen. Scott'* troops called tbe liquor cocktail, and carried the word back to tbe United States. It is said that the liquor was discovered by a Toltec noble, and that he sent it to the king by tbe band of his daughter, Miss Cocktail (Xockltl). Tbe king drank the liquor aud then looked at the maiden. The first tickled his palate, the second enamored his heart. It was a case of love at first sight in both instances, and he married tbe girl and started a pulque plantation. From that day to this the Mexicans have kept themselves saturated with pulque, and Miss Cocktail is one of the Venuses of Mexican tradition. NEW: GOODS -ALT A'S ORDINANCE. Beall & Oakley’s. It is now believed that ex-Scnator Evarts has been studying farming in Vermont in order that ho may step into Undo Jerry Rusk’s shoes in 1893. Mr. Evarts, however, will havo to turn Democrat If he expects to become a secretary of agriculture. Allen W. Thurman thinks the Third or Peoples Party will amount to practi cally nothing In the Ohio canvass. He believes that tbe leaders themselves now fully appreciate the fact that tbe only way to obtain any of tbe reforms de manded by their platform will be to combine with tbe Demoorats and first defeat McKinley. No man who wishes to preserve his reputation as a Democrat can afford to sulk in his tent to-night, when bis pres ence at tbe opera bouse will be construed as evldenco of orthodoxy. Whoever stays at home tonight without good cause will subject themselves to the bus picion of lukewarmness or a hankering aster Third partylsm, and no man in Sumter county can afford to go on record as either lukewarm or disaffected. Jones of Bingbamption says ho docs not Intend to run for governor of Now York on an independent ticket. The News never believed he would. Jones is tbe manufacturer of too good a qual ity of scales not to know that au inde pendent candidate in New York state would be weighed in tbe balance and found wadting when the returns came in. No, Jones is going to help pay the Democratic freight and bide bis time.— Blrmlngbam News. A St. Petersburg special to the New York Herald says: “Newspapers here express confidence that In view of the entente cord iale between France and Russia the Powers will hesitate to pro test against Turkey's concession to Rus sia, as regards the Dardanelles, for fear of raising thorny quotations regarding Bosnia, Cyprus and Egypt, while Tur key strengthed with the knowledge that the Franco Russian entente is a counter' poise to the Driebund, will not be easil* intimidated. Thus these papers believe peace is insured.” The organization of the American University was recently effected at Washington. Two women were among tbe incorporators, Mrs, John A. Logan and Mrs. Elizabeth J. Lomers of Wash ington. Bishop Hurst said in reference to tbe university: “It will be seen that in the selection of women as trustees, the needs of the age are recognized in affording women opportunity' with men In all the advantages of the highest cul ture.” In view of the public interest In the university, an appeal will shortly be *u*dc for $5,000,000 for the early com mencement of its work. ure he could have obtained almost any amount from them without other secur ity than his own indorsement. In the last Canadian election the spoliation system was an issue, and it was settled as we have seen it sottled at homo. Tho Iioland paper mills offered paper to tho Government at 7J cents, but an Investigation shows that it received 71 cents for tho quantity sup plied. Mr. Chaplean, secretary of state, admits that he asaeil the manufacturer "as ft rich man to contribute to tbe elec tion fund," ami the manufacturer ad mits that be did contribute to the Con servative Association. Tills reads like an account of tho Wanatnakor $400,000 transaction, save that we returned tbe fat in increased taxation instead of through fraudulent contracts; though our postofllce department did make a contract with a spoliationist for postal cards, which card, jvero fit only for blotting paper. It is all of a kind, and tbe spoliation tariff is the cause of it. Hukad lias risen both in England and Germany. Stnrra ion is threatening large numbers of people in Russia. The government of these countries will have to provide some methods by which tho people can have enough to eat, or there will be grave troubles this fall In Europe. Staivingmeu never reason and never listen to reason. They must have and will have, for the rule has come down for ages, either bread or blood. There is plenty of breadstuff in America, and ft is very likely that Uncle Jerry Rusk’s effort to introduce corn-bread into Ger many and Russia instead of rye bread will prove successful to a greater degree than anticipated. The Sea Island Cotton report of Hen ry W. Frost A Co., of Charleston, and Savannah, issued Sept. 5, contains some interesting information upon the Sea Island crop. Tbe report states that the crop for the year 18001)1 is the largest ever marketed, amounting to 08,120 bags. It was exported as follows: Liverpool, 34,207 bags; Havre and tbe continent, 4,823; northern mills, 20,002, leaving in stock at tho southern ports, 2,404 bags.—Savannah News. The enthusiasm of the young Demo crats of Americus and Sumter county is thoroughly aroused. They menu busi ness, and the opera house will be filled to-night from pit to dome. Every true Democrat realizes tho importance of im mediate action. T)ic rank and tile of [ Georgia Democracy must stand true to the line. The meeting will organize to night.
