f Americus, Ga., Sept. 10, 1891.
Mark Twain has just sold his new
novel to Editor Dana’s Sun for $12,000.
It still pays to be funny.
The people of Hayti are very much
pleased with their new Cabinet. In
deed, they are very much displeased
whenever they don’t have a new Cabi
net.
Atlanta claims that the hard times
which prevail all over the country have
skipped that city, and that everything
is serene and “flush” in the metropolis
of Georgia.
Eight thousand Jewish residents of
Odessa are under notice of expulsion.
The majority of these people own real
estate in and about the city, and nearly
all are engaged in business.
The New York Sun now calls him the
Hon. E. Freight Jones of Binghamton.
This is more toney than “Jones he pays
the freight,” as is becoming to an aspi
rant for the governorship of New York
HE WASN’T IN IT.
Last year the organized Democracy of
Americus took the reins In its hands for
the first time In municipal politics, and
notwithstanding the mayor had opposed
the assumption of such authority by the
Democracy, the people magnanimously,
and In recognition of past services, be
stowed the compliment of a regular
Democratic nomination upon the mayor.
Last night the young Democrats bad a
rousing meeting, to which everybody
bad been invited and urged to come, ir
respective of age; and everybody was
there by a big majority, except the
Democratic mayor of Americus, who,
The Times-Recobder is informed, was
conspicuously absent
As the standard-bearer of the city
Democracy he should have been con
spicuously present.
Is the mayor getting weak in the faith
in proportion as his constituents grow
strong?
It is to be hoped that there were rea
sons other than political ones that kept
him from the forefront last night, where
his constituents have a right to expect
to find him, putting on the armor to do
valiant battle for the Democracy, to
whom alone he owgs the honor of his
present position.
The Democracy of Americus have a
right to expect that^ Achilles shall not
sulk in his tent in this campaign, nor
even to remain in passive sympathy,
since the position of a Democratic mayor

Bishop Foster at tbe Ohio Methodist
Conference took occasion to express Ills
deepest convictions against the employ
ment by the church of roving, Irrespon
sible evangelists. Ho thinks they nre a
a curse to the church—vampires ho calls
them. The pastor is himself to bu the

■Enron Gantt says “that a few more
such meetings ns that held by the Veiling
Mens' Democratic League Monday
night, iu which our order and its lead
ers wero attacked and vlilified, will re
sult in the alllnuce of Georgia taking
charge of our party machinery nnd kick
ing tbo last one of those belligerents into
political oblivion.”
Meii are growing more temperate, not
because tbe law says they shall not liavo
a clianco to get drunk, but because pub-
lio sentiment impresses upon them the
yjOnvIitlon that they cannot afford to get
.drurik. It Is by strengthening tills sen-
timont that the work of temperance re
form is to bo chiefly prosecuted. Tell a
man the law says he shall not get drunk
and be Is quite likely to do it out of
spite; convince him that “It don't pay"
to get drunk, and no law will be needed.

Gen. Harris of West Virglnis, who
it appears was a member of the court
martial that condemned Mrs. Surratt to
death, Is preparing for publication a
history of the war In which he makes
the charge that Jefferson Davis and
certain members of the Confederate
Cabinet were aware of and encouraged
the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
It Is evident that the enemies and the
slanderer* of the dead President of the
Confederacy are determined to pursue
him oven beyond, the grave, but not a
single man in this country, or in Europe,
who has tbe slightest acquaintance with
tbe life or character, of Jefferson Davis
will believe for a mpment that he had
any knowledge of qr was in the remotest
degree connected with the loul plot to
assassinate Lincoln. It must be that this
Gen. Harris, who was a party to the
hanging of Mrs. Surratt, knows in his
own hesrt that tbe military conrt that
sent theunfortunate and Innocent wo
man to an Ignominious death upon the
gallows was guilty of tbe most damna
ble murder ever committed under tbe
forms of law, consequently ns a member
of that court he endeavors to shield him
self from tlie infamy of tbe not by re
viving an old slander against Jefferson
Davis, and vainly endeavoring to make
the world believe that the lamented

gold that may be required.”
America has been blessed in enormous
crops, while nearly every other nation
on the globe are so unfortunate as to
iiavo largely diminished yields. From
this it is estimated that our farming
classes will receive this year $1,000,000.-
000 more for their crops than they did
last year. This addition to the material
wealth of the country is just as real and
substantial as if $1,000,000,003 in gold
had been dug fromtlie earth. This vast
amount will not only relieve the fanners
from pressing debts, but will enable
them to purchase machinery and stock,
and all necessary articles of domestic
use, and will thus be distributed throiigh
the various channels of trade and trans
portation.!
Even such foreign journals as Tbe
London Statist takes this view of the sit
uation, and predicts a wonderfully pros
perous yoar for the United States.—Au

we have now been made awaro of the
fact that the publication of these reports
has given new vigor to the desire to emi
