Something About One of the Prominent EetebUebmente In Amerlcue-An Im- menee Stock thet le Uurlrelled-The Engle Shoe Store. A stranger InAmericusalways notices, particularly, the neat stores In the city and the generally business-like appear ance they have. This is especially the case with a cer tain number ot establishments that deal in dry goods or jewelry or clothing And more especially is it the case jrhen they have had occasion to look into the splendid establishment, of which John R. Shaw is proprietor, on Forsyth street. That storehouse has a genuinely metropolitan appearance, even from without, but when one;enters, he at once realizes that he is in an establishment, of which the proprietor is a thorough business man. Everything about the arrangements of the stock and the whole interior of the store suggests a knowledge of detail that is seldom found outside the large cities and, taken alto gether, the establishment is a credit to A meric us. Yesterday morning a Timks-IIkcoi.dkk reporter entered Mr. Shaw's place upon a business errand, and as the proprietor was engaged at the time, he whiled away an hour looking through the .blood, increases tho appetite an store. up the system. Foster Is in charge of the Eagle shoe store and Is very popular with all who know blm. Shaw's establishment Is truly a credit to Amertcus, and when one remembers that Mr. Shaw bas been In business at the same stand for nearly twenty-three yean, they eannot wonder that he has boen successful, for nearly everyone realizes the fact that “a rolling stone gathers no moss." The desk in Shaw's office Is presided over by Mr. H. Clove Davis, who la a huatling salesman himself, at times, for, occasionally, he'll throw aside bis pen and jump >out front and sell igoods alongside any of the boys. Mr. Shaw, personally, is known to everybody in this section, not only as a sharp, shrewd business man, but as a gentleman of the first water, who be lieves that the best goods at good prices will always pay both dealer and cus tomer. He has surrounded himself with a corps of gentlemen In the fullest sense of the word, and consequently It is always a pleasure to go to Shaw’s. WHERE WE WORSHIP. In connection with Shaw's clothing boose is the Eagle snoe store, of whieb Mr. Shaw is also proprietor, and In which one of the best selected and Drgast stocks of shoes ever brought to Americas caa h» found. Cobdxle, September 12.—[Special.]— John Kitchen, a white man, killed a negro by the name of Jordan Durham, this morning, at the Willingham Sub, Door and Lumber Company’s mill near this city. Durham was a desperate negro who has given s great deal of trouble to this section. He has been out of the chain- gang only a few years. He had served a term for some misdemeanor, and slnee his release has been worse than ever. It Is understood thet he had made frequent threats against the life of Mr. Kitchen and was very abusive and aggressive this morning before he was killed. He was seen in Cordele this morning, where he bought some cartridges with the remark that he would kill some white man to-day. Mr. Kitchen shot him In the back of his bead with a load of buckshot from a shotgun. Durham was killed instantly. This whole section of country will be glad to hear of the death of so danger ous a desperado. It Is said he bad hardly enough friends among his own race to bury him decently. Upon tho left, as one enters, is the gents' furnishings department, and such a stock of that class of goods Is rarely found, for it is the largest, without ex ception, in southwest Georgia. Every thing, from an ordinary bone collar but ton, to a suit of silk underwear, is kept la stock at Shaw’s, and a man who could not be fitted out in underwear at his place need look no ifurther. Tho stock is complete In every detail and when that is said nothing else is necessary; however, it would bo impossible not to notice the neckwear. Every known style and shape, of recent date, is repre sented In daintiest shades, and freshest concerts and nearly every week a fresh invoice is received. This department is under the charge of Mr. Sim J. Carter, who takes a great deal of pride ih making his stock show up well. Then comes the clothing department, in which anybody, “regardless of race, color, or previous condition of servi tude," can be fitted out so as not only to fit him but also to fit his pocket-book, Counter after counter la piled' high up with a fresh, fall stock of clothing, and in the drawers beneath the counters in numerable suits are hid from view; there Is no danger of not getting a fit in Shaw's place because if you can't find one among the suits on the counter, the gentlemanly salesman will pull open the drawers until he finds one that does. It is a boast In Shaw's, and one that can be made good, that any one, no matter whether short, tall or stout or slim, can befitted perfectly; and such a boast seems reasonable when one has a $25,000 stock of clothing to back itl The latest styles In clothing of all grades, from a sack suit to a dross suit, can be found at Shaw’s, and, any one from the ordinary day laborer to the wealthiest man In the country can bo easily satisfied here.' This house makes specialty ot children’s, boys’ aud youths' clothing, and a large stock of ex tra knee pants for boys Is carried. Shaw’s stock of clothing would do credit to many a metropolitan clothing house as it is undoubtedly the largest in this section of the state. At the time Mr. Shaw closed out his dry goods de partment a couple of years ago, he threw its value, about $15,000, into hi* cloth ing stock and since then he has been ablq to say, without fear of contradic tion, that nowhere else In Southwest Georgia can a stock as largo and com plete as bis be found. Mr. Shaw makes It a practice in hie clothing department, as well as in his entire business, to buy close, sell quick and keep a fresh, clean atock on hand. This has been the secret of his success In the clothing trade. The clothing department la presided over by Mr. J. C. Pope who is well and favorably known by nearly everybody in this section. Next comes the department of which Mr. Will P. Hornaday is in charge and which includes hats, canes, umbrellas and traveling bags. This stock is kept at the top notch always and in it one can find the latest stylss In toft or stiff hats, of every well known manufacture; the II. B. Tou know the old adage “Qoods well bought are half sold.” When we buy staples—we look for the best qualities obtainable—when we buy specialties, we look not alone for quality, bat for the effects that the finest fancies and the latest fads demand. Jn addition to this we always look for the lowest price that factories will give, and the best of it is, we don't stop looking nntil we get there on all three points—quality, style and price. unpacked orates, barrels and box* es, and then with goods marked and arranged, yon trill see that as onr oity adds one beautiful store after another, .there. is that same progressive spirit here, improving with improvements—improving on improvements—Butler & Berry’s Artveiau comer.
