THE AMERICUS DAILY TIMES-RECORDER: THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1891.
THE RESULT,
"When it was recently announced
that Thornton Wheatley's usual
pilgrimage had been made to the
Eastern markets, the public waited
to see in these columns, the report
of what had been done for tneir
benefit in the way of novelties in
goods and revelations in low prices.
All things being now Ready for
the Feast, the people of Americns
and the surrounding country are
invited to come. They are not ex
pected to have on their Wedding
Garments, for Wheatley’s is the
Place where the people must go
to be properly decked out for an
appearance, either at a feast or at
business; and nobody can have
the trade mark that a Perfectly
Dressed Man always bears, until
after they have been to

It seems that last Sunday, while all
of the family were away the little girl
"wont through" Mrs. Johnson's apart

one of the handsomest special trains that

A Danville; Major G. A. Whitehead,
general freight agent, Central system,
D D. Curran, superintendent South
western division; S. II. Hardwick, as
sistant general passenger agent and
several atiier prominent railroad men.
As soon as the arrival of the distin
guished party was known, Mr. U. B.
Ilarrold sent a pressing invitation ask
ing that tho gentlemen would become
his guests while in the city, which was
accepted without hesitation. Handsome
turnouts were quickly provided, and for
an hour the party was driven through
the prettiest streets of Americus and all
its many advantages were thoroughly
explained to them.
The guests had much to sny of'Ameri-
cus, in a complimentary way and what
most struck them were the numerous
new business blocks and handsomo resi
dences that stand as monuments to tho
grit, energy and prosperity of Ameri
cus.
At 3 o’clock tho train pulled out bear
ing tho party, and every member of it
expressed the regret that business pre
vented a longer stay in so pleasant a
town.
Tho object of tlio inspecting party is to
look Into the passenger and freight ac-
commodations along tho line, so that all
needed improvements can ho made, and
further, to see what can bo done nbout
moving this season's cotton with the
rapidity so much desired. It Is safo to
say that improvements all along the line
will follow tnis tour of inspection, and
that overy facility for handling passen
gers and freight will be provided.
Tho party camo directly hero from
Macon, and left for Albany, wbero they
will also look carefully over tho grohnd.
’ There is no doubt but that tbit visit
will be worth a great doal to Americus,
for the gentlemen now tee and know per
sonally the greatest needs of Ameri
cas, so far as their line Is concerned,
and of course eveerything will be done
to Improve the accommodations in
Americus.
The gentlemen who accompanied the
party on the ride wero Messrs. W. M
Hitt, R. T. Johnson and C. W. Lamar,
and they aided In every possible way to
make the occasion an enjoyable and
a profitable one for Americus.
Americus is pretty certain to hear
from yesterday's visit, for tho railroad
men aie well pleased beyond expression
with the city and its possibilities.
On Monday the things were missed
and a search was instituted, which re
sulted in the finding of the reticule with
its contents unbar ned,'in a box under
the house. The girl was taxed with the
theft and she acknowledged it, saying
she bad the watch at home She was
turned over to the police and was taken
to her mother's home to recover the
watch, but when she reached there she
found that the watch was missing from
the box in which she had placed it.
An Investigation failed to find tho
watch, and the girl was locked up on a
warrant charging her with larceny from
the house.
She will be tried this morning before
Judge Pilsbury, and it is hoped that
tho watch will be forthcoming or its
hiding place disclosed.

Hero's a good story to|d on a popular
society man of Americus, and tho best
part of it is that Iig tolls it himself!
t Said he to tho group about him: "Did
you folks over hear how I was arrested,
charged with burglary?”
...
In a moment everybody was urging
him to tell of his adventure, and al
though one or two in the group wero
disposed to make such remarks as, “lie
looks like a hardened criminal” or “that
face would give him away anywhere,”
etc., the yanng man, who is really good
looking, began his story.
Said ho: "Not many years ago, I was
employed in the government service and
my position compelled me to wear a
uniform—so much by way of prefaco.
One night I reached Washington after a
short absence, and as there was a par
ticular attraction at one of the theaters,
I determined to go directly thither from
the depot. It was bitter cold, and I dis
covered, as tho train disappeared, that I
had left my overcoat in it. I knew tho
baggage master at the dopot very well
so I stopped in and asked him for an
overcoat."

The flagstaff on The Windsor’s tower
adds a great deal to the handsome build
ing and gives It a business-like air.
If tho club rooms are finished in time,
the Americus Club will give the lirst

night.
The storo in the Hooper building,
which has been renovated and repainted,
is now occupied by W. H. West who was
formerly on Cotton avenue.
A pair of immense oxen, drawing a
four-wheel wagon, excited a great many
remarks yesterday. One of the animals
was almost us largo as a horse.
Tho handsome storeroom in tho new
block Is now occupied by French
& Chambliss, who will oarry a select
stock of groceries and liquors.
His commission as notary public and
ox-officio justico of tho peace for the
78th district, G, M,, has been delivered
to Mr. W. K. Wheatloy, and he will hold
his first monthly {ourt oarly in October.
Don’t fail to hear the wonderful tele
phone duett, sung by Lizzie Richmond
in “Keep It Dark” to-night at tho opera
house. It is a positive novelty, a' real
telephone being used. Miss Richmond
sings a love song through the telephone,
and the answer is distinctly heard by the
audience.
