e THE AMERICUS DAILY TIMES-RECORDER: WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 1891. THE BREAKFAST TABLE ITEMS OF INTEREST SPECIALLY PRE PARED FOR HASTY READERS. Yesterday's Doings In Pungent Pars* graphs—Some Snap Shots by the Ilepor- torlal Camera—What Was (loins on in Town Told In Briefest Manner. Police circles were quiet yesterday. The city was full of strangers yester day. Yesterday was the sixty-fourth anni versary of Mormonism. Railroad men report that travel is bet ter than for some time. The initial german of the season was given last night by tho Americas Club. Buildings arc in courso of erection all over Americus, and good carpenters are in demand. When the candy factory begins opera tion it will be “the thing” to give your best girl taffy. Ice Cain says don't bo afraid to come early to the opera house—curtain rises hereafter at 8:15 o'clock. “The Private Secretary" is one of tho best plays on the road and If you miss it you miss the attraction of tbe season. There 1s some talk of organizing a gun club In Americus and the untamed clay pigeon will suffer In consequence. An irrato negro and a stubborn mule attracted a good deal of attention on Lamar street yesterday morning. The two front rooms, up stairs, In the Ilamil building will be occupied by Judge Allen Fort, as law offices. Strangers who see The Windsor for the first time are very complimentary to Americus in tbelr remarks about that magnificent building. Ur. Walters, at the Alliance store, was forced to knock down an impudent negro, who attempted to assault him with a knife, yesterday. People who are going to sco tho “Pri vate Secretary” should be certain to reach the opera house before 8:15 o'clock. If they do not they will miss a portion of the play. It Is said that in the West Indies the the natives peel bananas without break ing the skin, and roast in tho ashes. Travelers who have eaten this prepara tion saf It is a delicious dainty. The Coming Show. The “New Private Secretary,” revised and re-arranged by the famous actor-au thor, Wm. Gillette, Esq., author of the great successes, “Heli by the Enemy,” “Mr. Wilkinson's Widows," ‘.‘All the Comforts of Home,” eto., will bo pro duced under the direction of Ur. Edwin Travers. The company Is composed of well-known and capable artists, solected especially for their fitness for the differ ent characters, forming as a whole, a stronger combination than has hitherto presented this charming comedy. Ur. Wm. Fairbanks, who represents the title role, the Rev. Robert Spaulding, Is with out question, the most successful Imper sonator of the part rendered famous by the author himself. Ur. Harry Eytlnge Is no less prominent as Cattermole. The charming Mias Bertha Livingston as Ulss Ashford, eclipses all former per formances of this part In abort, the entire oompany unites la giving a much better entertainment than has ever hith erto been given of this most laughable of modern comedies. It Wasn’t a Runaway. The mention of the marriage of Ur. George Simpson and Ulss Maud Bata, in yesterday’s Tiuas-RiconnsR, might be misconstrued by some people and It is with pleasure that the fact is noted that the marriage was not a clandestine one by any means. A largo circle of friends witnessed the ceremony, which occurred at the home of the parents of the bride, and Ur. Simpson was one of the happiest of men when be carried bis wife to bis formerly desolate bachelor’s abode. Tbe Oes Works. Yesterday Messrs. F. Petjen and U. Huntlne, of Fort Wayne, Ind., represent ing the Ker-Murray Manufacturing Com pany, arrived in Americus They come for the purpose of putting in the gasom eter and tank for tbe gas works, and will, therefore, be here some time. When fin ished, Americus will have a complete gas plant that will be a credit to the metropolis of Southwest Georgia. A Good Days Work. Yesterday was a busy day In nearly every branch of commerco in Americus. Trade was rushing and the heart of the merchant was glad, for tbe dollars came in, even if change was scarce, with a heavy rush. One retail house did an unprecedented day's business, selling over three hundred dollars worth of goods. Married Last Night. Last night, at 8510o’clock, Ur. W. U. Martin and Ulss Leola Guerry were uni ted in marriage at the Methodist parson age, Rev. J, B. Johnstone officiating Their many friends wish for them a long and happy voyage through life. Americus is nothing If not enterpris ing and progressive, and the latest proof of the city’s progressiveness is the fact that she is to have a candy manufac tory. Mr. Charles R. Smith, formerly of the firm of Richards & Smith, of Augusta, h.as"decided to locate in Americus and begin the confectionery business on .a Largo scale, and as the following letter will show, he will be ready for business in a short while. Washington, Ga., Sept. 21.—Messrs, liorum, Davenport & Co., Americus:—If nothing prevents I will be in your city by October 1st. to manufacture candy. Save your orders for mo. Chas. K. Smith. Mr. Smith will begin business here under the most favorable auspices and will furnish the Americus market with the latest novelties in confectionery, be sides handling the regular trade supplies In unusually large lots. The factory will be in full sway by tbe middle of October at tbe very latest and Americus poople will use Christmas confectioneay of home manufacture. SHOT 019 FRIKND. OFFICIAL COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS. REG ('LAIE METING. Bow Tom Gale. Filled “Stone,” Oil With Bird Shot. Yesterday Uessrs. Thomas Gulce and “Stoney” Glover went out in the country to shoot doves as they went to roost. They lost each other In some way and when Mr. Gulce had a good line shot he blazed away and unintentionally, of course, filled Mr. Glover with bird shot. The wounds were not serious, but the shot went so deep that tbe physician called to attend the wounded man decid ed not to cut them out until later on when they have festered. Mr. Glover is not seriously Injured and regards the affair very lightly, although Mr. Gulce is shocked at the accident Buy your winter suits at Thornton Wheatley’s. A Correction On yesterday an editorial paragraph appeared In The Tiwcs-Recorder, con corning Governor Northen, which by reason of a blunder made by the com positor and overlooked by tbe proof reader, Mr. Conoley, is reproduced to day. Where the word “Alliance” ap peared yesterday, the editor bad plainly written the words “piles of;” anil the substitution was unintentionally made by me In setting up the copy. The word 'Alliance” was not in tbo copy before me. J. G. McDonald, Compositor. OPINION or U. 8. MINISTER SCRUGGS. Ms. A. K. The handle lias been destroyed by age and exposure but, although very much rusted, it is still otherwise intact, and could very probably be made an excel lent weapon.
