while his note for 5.(XX) marks, held by
Mr. Altheimer. was soon to fall doe. The
baron wrote a note to bis creditor, ask
ing him to call and arrange for an exten
sion of time under the usual conditions.
Altheimer replied briefly in writing that
under the new antinsury law he did not
feel safe in continuing to lend money in
bis former way. and • therefore proposed
to go into some other business, where
his capital wonld yield him legitimate
profits. He notified the baron that the
note wonld be presented for collection.
This turn of nffnirs was embarrassing
for the young statesman He wrote
again to Mr, Altheimer, saying that the
nsnry act was never intended for cases
like bis. and coaid not apply to their re
lation He urged a renewal of tho note
us a perfectly safe and sensible transac
tion.
A reply soon came from the Hebrew,
acknowledging the baron's good Inten
tions ns well as bit legal aenmeu. bnt at
the same time pointing to tho fact that
tho Interpretation of the law was left
