A Negro Is Saved from the Chain-Gang by
Hie White Brother.
The general impression prevails at
the north, even among the most enlight
ened, that the negro in the south occu
pies a place in the estimation of the
white man inferior to that of his dog,
and yet an incident occurred in this city
a few days since which has perhaps never
yet been, and probably never will be,
paralelled in any northern community.
A certain negro, very well liked, but
having no particular distinguishing
qualiilcations, lubricated with “shorts”
until “that wealthy feeling’’ possessed
him, when he concluded to squander
some of his surplus currency in a social
gamo with some kindred spirits. The
probabilities point to the players haring
spent the “kitty” for liore of the lu
bricating fluid, for when our vigilant
police officers made a raid upon the
place he was so overcome with “that
tired feeling” that he was unable to ef
fect his escape.
At the trial ho was sentenced to sir
months on tho chain-gang or the pay
ment of a heavy fine. He had no money
for the fine and the brick yard came
near having an addition to its working
force, but his white “enemy" stepped in
and saved him from one-half years dis
graceful labor.
A subscription list was circulated and
in a very short time the necessary
amount was raised. He was liberated
and wo will venture to state that there
were many who contributed towards his
freedom who had never heard of him.
And yet New England says that the
southern negro knows no friend save of
his own color. They in that section of
sublime enlightenment are glowing
philanthropists on paper and are never
so happy as when publishing polysyllablo
effusions abnslvo of the south and its
grinding cruelty to the emancipated race
within its borders, but we notice that it
is the southern white voter who taxes
himself to eduoate the negroes and
vide asylums for their Insane and
and that it is not by phllanthroplo con
tribution from the north that these In
stitutions are reared and maintained.
