THE AMERICUS DAILY TIMES-RECORDER: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1891. THE STREET CABS. FURTHER INFORMATION IN REGARD TO THE MATTER. To-day u the but D»y of Grace and the Bnbeeriptloiu Enrolled Will In All Prob ability Settle the Qveetlon la One Wej The arrival of Mr. T. J. Kenny of Boa- ton, In the city on Thuraday night was noted In yeaterday'a Timik-Rkcordkr. ■With Mr. Kenny came Mr. Crowley of . the southern department of the Thomp son Houston Electric Co., one of the best experts In this eonntry npon electrid street rallroadt. Mr. Crowley spent the day yesterday in examination of the railroad properly and tils Investigation has natlsfli d him tbsta very conslderadle amount above what has been already raised will be required to justify reason able expectations of the road being put in operation. The pvblio was advised that 11,500 were still needed to make up the necessary amount which would justify favorable consideration andae- tion by the owners. It Is to be regretted that this entire amount was not raised at once on yesterday; and that this morning above FI,100 are still to be raised. Quite a number of persons of large means and holders of real estate directly affected have not yet done anything at all; and to these people The Timeh-Rkcohdrr would make a special appeal to rally to the help of Americas just at this junct ure, when only the paltry sum of a few hundred dollars stands In the way of the operation of the railroad. There are at least two corporations here of ample means that are vitally Interested In the welfare of Americus, each one of which should subscribe 9600. Why might not the Araerious Maun- ufaeturing and Improvement Company came to the front in this matter, and subscribe something? Their charter is liberal and covers the case; they have already taken stock In other enterprises of less general benefit, and the Interests of the “Windsor” cer tainly would be materially promoted $500 or even 95,000 worth by the operation of the street railway. The Tmibs-Recobder feels that the people of Americus, nearly all of whom are stockholders in the Improvement ft Manufacturing Co., would heartily en dorse such a subscription. Mr.|Crowley after having spent yes terday in looking over the property will leave the city to-day. ^ Mr. Kenny will remain here to-day to see what our people are willing to do towards dosing the proprosed trade; and ft Is to be hoped that bis efforts to reach a basis of final adjustment will be aocessfuL COTTON COMING LIVELY* Mach of the Fleecy Stsplo Being Iteeelred. It Sells Well. i vj Cotton is looking up. The market Is very active and the price has advanced anywhere from an eighth to a quarter of a cent In the last twelve hours. It is, from all Indies, tjons, going hlghe»j%ay the cotton men. Some who ought to know say that It will go to 10 cents. Cotton poured into Americus yester days U came frpm every quarter. A prominent buyer told a Timeb-Recor- i>kk reporter that tlin receipts would not run short of 900 bales. The receipts to. day will not be less than 1,200 bales. The warehousemen are busy, and the farmers happy over the increase In price. Americus will overflow with cotton to day, and trade will be rushing to every merchant and trades department The cotton buyers of Americus offer the top of the market for the staple, and the warehousemen offer Inducements such as none others can give. Cotton fires everywhere, but they don’t burn In Americus worth a cent It Is safe to store cotton in this fire-proof town. Not a fire worth mentioning in two years— can any city In Georgia beat this record? Only 91,200 Is lacking to guarantee the running of the street cars. There are scores of pieces of property out on the line of the toad that will each be benefitted the full amount of 91,200 by the operation of the street cars. WIU the property owners fail to realize where their Interests lie, and not come up to the needs of the hour ? There are a dozen men In Americus who own ten to fifty thousand dollars worth of real estate, each, along the line of the street railway, who ought not to hesitate an hour Ih making a subscrip tion of 9100 towards starting the cars. No better Investment could be made. Thomasvllle Ahead, The following Worn the Thomasvllle ' Times Enterprise shows that with all of the boasts of AmeHous about progress, metropolitan airs, jete., our neighbor Is ahead of us by a large majority: “Mr. Lasse ter, who faai charge of the street sprinkling, Is doing good work, and has saved the merchants of Broad street many dollars In keeping the dust down. He richly earns tbo small amounts subscribed by each merchant ” The Times-Recorder has appealed to the merchants to act and quit kicking by word of mouth; and If they felt too poor to subscribe personally to puts watering cart on the streets, then to sign a petition to the ^clty oqunoll and the water commission to take the matter up. But the dost still sweeps in clouds through the streets and In the doors and on the goods, and onr merchants merely growl and grumble. Enough damage to goods and discom fort to merohanU, clerks and customers have resulted to cover the expense of half a dozen water carts, and yet noth- ing has been{done. Well, maybe our people like It, or rather they like a dollar M or two per month too well to exobange it for well watered streets and dean stores and happy customers. Smith, the genial pro prietor, ie not giving out any stale taffy, but pure unadulterated stick candy. He made bis first shipment over the S. A. ft M. railroad yesterday, and Is prepared to sell candy of the purest make to the wholesale trade. Mr. Smith is now located In the ware- rooms of Messrs. Borum ft Davenport and Invites dealers to give him a call. One hundred thousand dollars will not begin to cover the appreciation In the value of olty property along the line of the ctreet railroad, If the car* start. Will ths property owners reject this op portunity ? To the Aesthetic. Dr. W. C. Russell has placed in the two windows of the Pharmacy facing north and west, some lovely specimens of semi-tropical horticulture, to the de light and admiration of the ladles. Among the handsomest of his collection are the callsdlum, drocenlura, Jerusa lem palm, maiden hair and walking ferns, the latter being most peculiar In Its growth, evincing a Standard OU-llke proclivity of taking root everywhere it touches. Are you willing to be the direct cause of this failure by not doing your duty? Ie Judge Wheatley’. Court. Barlow Brothers' Minstrels at the Baldwin theater last night offered an ex cellent first part, in which the good alngtng by vocalists brilliantly costumed was highly entertaining. The gymnast ic feats of the Leon Brothers, the jug gling of the Japanese troupe, and the comicalities of Messrs. Barlow Brothers, which followed, were all oommendable features In a programme that was ar ranged with genuine taste and skill.— San Francisco Argonaut. A Pleasant Gathering. Hudson, about fifteen miles from the city, and, despite every effort was en tirely destroyed. There were burned about fifteen bales of cotton belonging to Mr. Hudson and parties for whom it bad been ginned. The buildings on the premises were a total loss, including the valuable mill machinery, mill and tool houses. Mr. Hudson estimates his loss at 92,500. No Insurance. • • • * • Yesterday morning, about 11:45, the fire alarm was sounded from the second ward, and the blaze proved to be at the cotton warehonse of Council ft McGar- rah on Cotton avenue. Its origin is sup posed to have been the accident il drop ping of a match on the floor and the sub sequent ignition thereof from a passing truck. A few bales of cotton were (lightly damaged externally, yet but for prompt action of the employees of the warehouse, there would have In all probability resulted quite a disastrous conflagration, even though the' fire de partment was on band in the shortest possible time. Aek yourself this question: “Why should I refuse to subscribe 9100 to the guarantee fund for starting the street cart?” You have the money, you own property, you have a direct interest in the growth and prosperity of Americue.
