MoltUo'e Literary Rem.In.
The quantity of the writings of the
late Marshal von MoltUe is unexpected
ly large. A portion of the papers is of
purely military interest It consists of
reports and strategical observations on
the campaigns in which Moltke com
manded. These are to be issned by
Messrs. Mittler & Son, of Berlin, and
English editions will be published by
Messrs. Osgood, of London. But the
late marshal also left u sort of autobiog
raphy, comprising twenty-nine diaries,
which cover almost the whole of his
military career, and are replete with
notes on all the events in which the
great soldier was in a way mixed up.
These diaries give a vivid illustration of
Moltke's character, and were orginally in
tended for the perasnl of his family only.
Bnt it has been decided to publish them,
and they are to appear first as serials In
a German periodical and in an English
illustrated journal. Afterward they will
be issned In book form.—London Times.
Drawltig Cara Up Rill.
The track of the Rainier Avenue Elec
tric railway has been completed down
Washington street as far os Third, and
cars are now regularly running to
Eighth. Thu compensation weights for
taking the cars i.p the steep incline be
tween Fifth and Eighth streets ure in
place. Upon trial the contrivance has
worked successfully, and cars will be
running up and down in a few days.
The arrangement is a very ingenious
one. Tlie regular track is standard
gangs: inside of it and two or three feet
below the street lovel is a second track
of two feet gange. On this runs a track
loaded with lead so ns to weigh lietween
five and six tons. This lower track is
covered over and nothing of it is seen
from the street When the truck is at
the bottom oi the hill a cable to which
it is attached runs on pulleys to the top,
and there turns over a big concealed
wheel out to the side of the track.
A car coming down the hill tabes the
end of the cable, and the weight of the
descending car, together with the elec-
trio power, draws the heavy track un
derneath np the 16) per cent, grade-to
the top of the hill. When the car re
turns the truck is at the top of the hill.
As soon ns the cur is attached to the end
of the cable, then at the bottom, the
track is released, and its weight as ft
runs down draws the car np. The cable
pulled oat at the top of the bill as the
car comes down runs in a narrow slot
jnst inside of the track on the north side
of the street.—Seattle Post intelligencer.

A curious story comes from Salt Lake
City which la attracting much comment
bom friends and acquaintances of
Policeman Charles F. Wanless, shot and
killed by JoMph A. Barnes, Sept 18,

another subject for discussion. Barnes

▲ married sister of the dead officer

was much affected by the tragedy, and
took the loss of her brother to heart In

three months ago, as the report is heard
here by friends of the dead officer, his
sister gave birth to a boy perfectly
formed, bnt with a red birthmark over

A Police Station Pharmacy.
While I was in the Eldridge street po
lice station the other afternoon a man
came in with his hands on his stomach
and a pained expression in bis faco.
'Give me somo cholera medicine,'' be
said to the sergeant in despairing tones.
The sergeant took a bottle from the
locker behind the desk and called the
doorman, who administered .a dou of
the stuff to tbs patient. Be went out
apparently relieved.
“1 didn’t know yon ran a pharmacy,"
I said to the sergeant, who explained
that in the summer the police in some
of the station booses keep on hand chol

sioners of charities and correction for
the relief of suffering humanity too

Shakespeare didn't say that, but very
likely be would have said somethin;
similar, if be were living in this 1011
century, when so many suffer untold
agonies from indigestion. Of eoune he
would have gone on to say that a man
must be a fool not to take the “some-

of the whole system—and it is a foot,
