We find this Hit stones first mentioned in tbe descrip tion of the high priest’s (Hoses) breast plate, in Ezekiel xxvili: 18; zeeond, aa enumerated among the ornaments of the king of Tyre, Ezekiel xxvll:13; and thirdly, tbe figurative foundation atonez of tbe new Jerusalem, Revelation xlx: 17. THE ADAMANT. The adamant, which la commonly called corundum, it tbe bard stone whioh is ground up to make emery pow der. In tbe Bible it waa once translated as diamond, and was supposed to be tbe stone upon which the ten command ments Wore engraved. THE AGATE. * The agate is usually a white stone with delicate veins of red or green color traversing it like sea weed. It derives its name from the river Achates, In Sicily, where it Is found in abandonee- It is mentioned in the Bible as a win dow ornamentation, Islaah llv:ia. AMETHYST. The amethyst, called in Hebrew “Aoh- Inman,” la a bluish transparent quartz, exceeding bright and beautiful; It la ao called by the Hebrew* because It wee supposed to produce pleasant dream*. THE BEHTL. Little is known about the beryl except that It waa tbe hardest stone known to the anolents for cutting purposes and Is also known as the onyx and aqua-ma rine. CHBTSOLITE. Chrysolite was usually called "term- lsh" and waa a Spanish stone brought from Tartesue In Spain. Tbe ebrysolito i* mentioned in Rst. xxi, 29. THE DIAMOND. Tbe diamond, so popular In Americus, Is called in Hebrew “yahnlom.” This stone could not have been used in Moses' breastplate, for tbe anoienta knew no method of cutting such a hard (tone. It supposed that In Exodus xxvili, 18, it a mistranslation for onyx, alabaster or jssper. TBE EMERALD. The ancient emerald is doubtless tbe same stone as that of to-day—tbe jacinth or hyacinth. This mutt have been a atone of prismatic qualities, as it is said to have given forth white, grey, red, red dish brown, yellow or pale green and blue lights. TBE JASPER. This is the last stone mentioned in tbe setting of the Ligh priest's breast- piste, and is described in tbe Bible ts “most precious” and “like crystal.” THE ONYX. Tbe onyx is often confounded with tbe beryL In cutting across tbe layers one find* it to be a white and blaek, sad brown and blaek atone. THE TOPAZ. In Job 21; 10, we read of the topaz. It was found in Egypt and on an Island in the Red See, from wbioh It took its name. Pliny speaks of It as a highly valued atone for It* greenish yellow tints.
