Mr. J. F. Ross, who has chargo of
Sumter’s exhibit at the Piedmont expo
sition in Atlanta, will to-day ship his
collection of novelties for that inter
state fair.
While the aggregation is not altogether
so good as might have been wished, yet,
Mr. Ross, through great exertion and
continual canvassing has succeeded in
collecting together an exhibit that will
prove of credit to the county and people.
’Til a pity that Sumter county did not
take more interest in the matter, and by
individual effort assist Mr. Ross in his
arduous work. There are few counties
in the state that can make a better show
ing, and Sumter only needs the proper
amount of advertising to rank among the
banner corps of Georgia.
To Mr. Ross should be given great
praise for his nubia and effective work to
demonstrate to tlio outside world our
varied resources, and ills show in At
lanta, reflecting credit as it does upon
this section which lie represents, will re
dound to (its own good.
Tho Piedmont Exposition is an iosti
tution of vital importance to our people,
a9 can bo readily estimated from the re
suits of the past, and too much attention
cannot be paid to it by those who pos
sess articles which go to prove our supe
riority as a section over the rest of the
world. Greatly has it aided the develop
ment of the new south and more mater!
ally yet will it render assistance. Let
everyone help to swell the exhibit

Whilst everybody and his wife is
agog over the subject of Gen. Henry R.

it may not be inappropriate to state that
there were two vessels which left the
coast of Africa with cargoes of natives
to be smuggled into some Southern port.
Whether it was originally intended that
the vessels were to land somewhero on
the Savannah river is not certainly
known; bnt many of them interested In

The cargo was laudeil aid hidden In
tlie swamps several miles north of the
present Charleston & Savannah railroad,
from which poiat It was distributed
among the speculntive owners. Afany
who fell to the lot of ilo.se who lived in
the neighborhood of where tho cargo
was landed remained in seclusion in
that dense swamp, aud emancipation
found them there. They have therefore
never left it, and only now come out in
times of high water; auch times as when
the river risea to thirty feet at AugitBta.
They have never mixed either with the
white or, indeed, witli the negro popula
tlon, except in isolated cases. They are
there now, and the negroes of the sur
rounding country cannot speak freely
with them.
