Inman of Atlanta has pur chased the new Rome Hotel property, corner of Broad street and First avenue. Ip David Bennet Hill Is wise he will follow the example of Grover Cleveland In all respects. By prompt action he has time enough to make a great hit on the eve of the next Democratic national convention. For example, twins. AN ALLIANCE COMMISSIONER The movement to secure the vacancy on the Inter-State Commerce Commie ■Ion, made by the death of W. L. Bragg, for an Allianceman has at last crystal- ized, and the name of Hr. D. P Dewain, of South Carolina, has been presented to the President, endorsed by President Polk, of the National Farmers' Alliance, and the State Alliances of Georgia, West Virginia, Louisiana, North Carolina and Michigan, and It la said that more en dorsements are to come from other State Alliances. Ex-Representative I Clements, of Georgia, who lost his seat In Congress because of bis opposition to the principles advo cated by the Alliance, bad been the sup posed favorite of Ur. Harrison up to the advent of an Alliance candidate. The appointment of Ur. Clements would, it is said, be regarded by the Alliance as a direct and Intentional affront to that or ganization. Uany people believe (hat if no other candidate is put forward by the Alliance, and Ur. Deweln receives the endorsement of tbe State Alliance tbat his friends expect him to get, that he will secure the prize. It Is regarded by many as only justice that the Farmers’ Alliance should have a representative on tho Board of Commissioners.—Augusta Evening News. The Marie Greenwood Opera Compa ny, who lost all their costumes and prop erties in the Templo Theatre fire at Owensboro, Ky., Saturday, will disband, Miss Greenwood's father having arrived from Memphis and so advised her. London Tid Bits lately offered a prize for the best definition of “money." The prize was awarded to Henry E Baggs of Sheffield. It can always be de pended upon and is pleasant to take, octl lm If Governor Northern does not receive the nomination to succeed himself, then the next Governor must come from North Georgia, tho homo of rock-ribbed Democracy. And if President Harrison doesn’t place Judson Clements on the Inter-State Commerce Commission, the “Mountain Colt” will be the man to oc cupy the state parsonage out on Peach tree street,—Trlbune-of-Rome. Sib John Pope Hennessey, in whose ^person the Irish people first rebuked Parnell, died on the same day as the late leader. There is something in this oc currence that cannot fall to attract tbe attention of the superstitions. Sir John’s death leaves a vacancy in the Commons for which the factions of the Irish party, reunited by the death of Parnell, can nominate and eleot a union candidate. Hon, Chables F. Lobinq, of Boston, Mass., the Supreme Regent of the Royal Arcanum, has been unanimously ten dered the nomination from the Sixth Congressional District of Massachusetts. He is a lawyer of deolded ability, a fine speaker, and a member of .the distin guished Losing family that has ocoupled a prominent place in publSo affairs for so many years. Hls nomination is said to be equivalent to an election. It shown a pretty pasa of corruption in Pennsylvania politiea when the issue of the present campaign has to be made up on tbe Ten Commandments, and es pecially upon that one of them which deelsres “Thou shalt not steal." Tbe Democratic candidate for Attorney Gen eral says: “On that plank the impending battle must be fought We must permit no confusion of the issues when the honor of Pennsylvania is at stake.” While ex-Editor Gazaway Ilartrtdge thlpks that the death of the Burner bill, following that of tho OUve bill two years ago, will effectually kill off for the future all hostile railroad legislation, Editor Rlohardson of Columbus ondorses the position taken by The Tiues-Recokdeb tbat the fight hat really just begun. Tbe railroad wreckers developed too much strength in tbe two last Legislatures to die so easily now; and unless some rad ical changes come about, the war will boon. Mbs. Victoria Guelph, queen of merry England, has forty grandohlldren supported by the State. The Guelph family la the only rival of the Australian rabbits In the matter of feeundlty. As will be seen from the above, certain writers Insist on calling the Queen by her maiden name, although her husband was Prince Albert WetUn. According to the laws of England, a woman upon marriageOtakes the named of her hus band, unless by special contract or enact ment to the contrary. When the learned editors produce the record, they must call her Mrs. Victoria Wcttin. SMALL MANUFACTORIF.S. The Columbus Enquirer sounds the key-note when it says: A number of small manufactories In Col umbus would contribute sreitly to the mate rial alvancemeilt of the community. No volume that could he written about the way to push a town could contain more concentrated wisdom than do theBo three lines. The TufEs-RhconDKit has often called the attention of the people of Americug to the fact that the growth of tills city must depend on manufacturing, and es pecially on numerous small industries; and the example of Atlanta has been oited as the best evidence of the benefits of such a method. Undeb the head of “The Goats on Top Again," the usually sedate Savan nah News says: “The goat ordinance seems to have become a dead letter again, aa it was for years. Tbe festive William and Nannie are once more seen parading unmolested through the streets tackling posters, tin esns, old shoes, eto. The police hsve become tired of tho wesry sport of ohaalng goats through the streets and being laughed at for their efforts to uphold the dignity of tbe city ordinance. The goat is Again more pow erful than the law, and whether the ani mals are considered a political issue or not, they continue to hold the upper- band. Who is to-blame for the failure of the enforcement of the ordinance which Mayor McDonough so patriotic ally unearthed from the dusty archives of tbe city afew months ago,' is a ques tion which no one seems able to answer. Tbe polloe were very Industrious for a few days gathering In ths innocent faced animals, but the sport was probably too muoh of an unhinging for their tired and weary bones, and they gradually became less eflfioient in their foot racing qualities and let the goats severely alone." The sheriff of Camden, N J., has seized a cemetery lot on an execution. This to a The Macon Telegraph . of yesterday •ays: “A World’s Fair convention will be held In Macon during fair week for tbe purpose of devising a plan for tbe raising of n fund to advertise the wealth and resources of the state.of Georgia to the world as It passes through tbe Co lumbian exposition. Governor Northen will be ssked to preside over the meeting and delegates will be invited from every county and every city in tbe state. Not Teas than $200,000 will be neoossary to do justice to the state of Georgia in her de partment at tbe World's Fair, and it is not to be doubted that only a very few days will be sufficient to obtain the guar antee of thla amount Macon, Savannah, Augusts, Columbus, Atlanta and other leading cities of tbe state will no doubt be represented in large numbers at tbe meeting, and tbeir delegate will come prepared to place a handsome snm oppo site the turns of the section which they represent Under the plan of assess ment one of the counties will perhaps pay as high as $5,000, others perhaps ts low as $500.” Sfeakino of the attachment of the Legislature for their free pastes, Editor Richardson of Columbus says of this in teresting piece of pasteboard: The fact Is, ths free railroad pass, for the Georgia legislator Isa Batura. It has come to be regarded as a legitimate perquisite of tbe offlee, and tbe incumbent Is not apt to cut It oK It Is likely that the next and suc ceeding Leglslatorae wUl fallow in the foot- etepe of this Legislature, and Its predeces sors, on this question. Someday thsre may be another constitutional convention, and then tbe people may decide the t the free pees ooght to go, and it will go, hot it Is not Ukcly to disappear before. When tills matter first came np some days ago, The TTmes-Bkcobdeb sug gested tbe remedy which tbe Enquirer- Son advocates abora; tbat of thn strong arm of a constitutional conrantfon. Nothing else can now remedy this ertL Says an exchange: It would be diffi cult to imagine a situation more forlorn than that wbloh Mrs. O'Shea-Parnell is left by Mr. Parnell's death. Tbe sorrow natural to her bereavement must be poignsntly aggravated by the conscious ness that, however devoted she may have been to him, bis connection with her blighted a career that until the blight cam j was singularly noble and brilliant. Of her qualities the world knows little, but interest will always at tach to her as the object of the one dom inating and overpowering passion of a man who was to n curious degree free from the Incitements of passion or tbe weakness of sentiment. She is the Cleopatra of a modern story that almost rivals that of Marc Antony. P. P.
