The aoldiers’ pension iilll was lost by
reason of tho non-concurrence ot the
house In the a senate amen Iment.
Whenever Mr. Carnegie Is asked to
subscribe to a Republican campaign
fund, bo immediately cuts down the
wages of bis employes.
Dn. Candler says the King Solomon
show is a “bald sacrilege ” Hoes this
have any reference to the “bald heads'
that occupy the front seats?
As libel and damago suits against
newspapers are now fashionable, Sam
Jones oan tackle the rich New York Sun
for saying that Platt and Fassett are
rivals of Sammy.
Hon* Spencer R. Atkinson, of Glynn
connty, was appointed by the governor a
member of the board of trustees for the
State university, and the appointment
was confirmed by the senate.
Einstein, the assignee of Abraham
Backer, has flted a suit against the Ma
con Construction Company for the sum
of $667,500, due on open account and
past due promissory note.
Governor Xoktuex seems to lovo a
joke as well as anybody. When he was
waited on by a committee which notified
Aim of the intention of the Legislature
do adjourn, he replied that he had no
-objections. Neither have the tax-payers
of Georgia.
The Constitution says: “Major W. F.
Shellman of Savannah, formerly con
nected with the Central road at that
place, has come to Atlanta to make It
dlls home He purchased some valuable
Teal estate In the city and may engage In
the real estate business here."
AmoXq the last things done by the
Senate was to past two bills of great
value to Georgia, one providing for an
amendment to the constitution to hold
. 'sessions ot the Legislature annually here
after; and the other to amend ao as to
limit the sessions to fifty days. Both
these now only need the Governor’s sig
nature to become laws.
In tub present exolting campaign in
Ohio, It is said of the two candidate! for
Governor, that Campbell !■ not the ora
tor, MoKlnley Is, bat in his simplicity of
speech, his sympathy with bis audience
and his avoidance of anything theatrical
wins vote# when his opponent fails. He
is mnoh quloker than MoKlnley In see
ing a point, ia more ready in retort, and
his off-hand style of oratory effeots muoh

OEN. YV. H. F. LEE DEAD. •
Maj.-Gcn. William Henry Fltzhugh
Loo, the second son of General B. E
Lee, died at his home in Kavensworth,
Fairfax county, Va., Thursday evening,
aged fifty-four.
He bad represented his district for
two terms In Congress, and was a mem-
bar-elect of the next house.
The cause of bia death was heart trou
ble and dropsy..
He bore a remarkable resemblance to
bis illustrious father, Gen. Robert E.
Lee, and was no doubt the worthy son of
a noble sire. His record in the Confeder
ate army was a brilliant one, and he won
his promotion because of his merits, not
because of the fact that he was the sou
of R. E. Lee.
He served a term of years as president
of the state agricultural society with
marked ability and success.
,He was twice elected to the Virginia
senate, and was unquestionably regard
ed as the leader of bis party in the legis
lature.
Gen. Lee was an admirable speaker-
sensible, dear, and at times ver.v elo
queut—and was one of the best mana
gers, without any of tho trickery of the
demagogue, of a political campaign in
the stato.
He was elected to Congress from his
district three times by ao overwhelming
majority, and had he been spared he
would have been elected governor of the
Old Dominion—a positiou which his
grandfather filled, and his father would
have filled, but for his positive refusal
to accept the nomination.
NOT A SUBJECT FOR LAUGHTER.
The staid old Savannah News is wak
ing up; and ihe cause of this rude awak
ening la a bona fide libel suit.
Jasper DeLaughter, who formerly
lived in Valdosta and is now a citizen of
Alabama, but who was supposed by the
Valdosta Times and the citizens of Val
dosta to be J. E. DeLaughter, who was
arrested and now occupies a cell in the
Chatham county jail for the Central
railroad car robbery Friday night, Sept.
11, has entered suit in the United States
court against the Morning News, the
Atlanta Constitution and the Valdosta
Times for $25,000 damages each for the
publication of the report to that effect
Editor Estlll plaiutively says: "The
Morning News has been published forty-
one years and lias never lial a libel suit
before.”
Please Report.
Parties who fail to receive their paper
will please report the fact promptly to
this office and not wait for several days
before giving the information.
Subscribers who are missed by the
carriers are particularly requested to
notify the office of the fact.
Green Cain, of Perry, Ga., advertises
that his mule and buggy have been lost
or stolen. Now if It was Green Cane
that bad disappeared, it would be very
natural to suppose that the mule was re
sponsible for the disappearance, but how
can the public account for the vagaries
of the mule while green cane was in the
vicinity. Ti uly, nobody really under
stands a mule.
THE "OCALA RESOLUTION.”
The House didn't pass the “Ocala res
olution,” but passed by an almost unan
imous vote the following substitute,
offered by Mr, Trammell:
Resolved, by the House of Representatives,
the Senate concurring, That our Senaton
and Representatives ta Congress be, and
they are hereby requested, to use their Influ
ence and votes to ssenre legislation which
will correct the evils complained of by the
National Farmers’ Alllanes and Industrial
Union In eonvantlon at Oca a, Fla., espe
cially ibooe that relate to the present flnan-
elal and taxation po ioj of the Government.
This was a compromise by whloh
those who did not favor the Ocala plat
form In lta entirety were still enabled to
vote for the general reform movement
■ought to be Inaugurated by the Alll-
anoemen who formulated the Oeala plat
form.
“Sandy” Cohen gets in another big
half-column puff of “King Solomon” In
the Atlanta Journal, over the signature
of Dr. W. A. Candler, president of Emo
ry College. Maybe Sandy wrote this
himself and merely signed Dr. Candler’s
1 name; bat whether forged or genuine, it
works Sandy's way, and will bring hun
dreds to see the “naughty” show who
would otherwise stay sway. These col
lege presidents are too “fresh” even for
freshmen.
The epldemto of girl babies has now
set In, since the Cleveland household set
the example; and now Speaker Clark
Howell MU into line as graeefully as the
rest. Should Cleveland’s political for
tunes Improve after this, little Both will
be regarded as a maseotte; and girl ba
bies will be at a premium to all politi
cians and professional men, while twin
glrU would be simply Irresistible. Bach
elors like Gov. Hill and the fathers of
boy babies will not be In It this year.
It is likely the Southern Express
Company will have litigation over the
reward offered offered for the capture oi
the robbers who held up the train near
Collier’s station some weeks ago. Mar
shall Harris of Forsyth, who effected the
first capture, .and was Instrumental la
running the others down, recovering
most of the stolen money, has not yet
.been paid. He has made several de
mands for payments, finally offering to
settle for $250, The company thinks he
asks too mneh. Harris will now sne for
the $1,000 reward.
Tax break In the price of cotton U ex
plained by the enormous receipts at the
ports. The Sevannsh News says: “Sa
vannah’s cotton receipts this week have
been Something phenomenal. If they
continue the remaining two days of the
weak at the same rate aa for the last
four days the rcoeipta at the port for the
week will be greater than for any pre
vious week in iUjhUtory. The receipts
for the last four days hare been 53,569
bales. Yesterday’s reosipts were 12,060
bales, against 8,T7X balsa the same day
year, again of 4,188bales.”
One of the largest deals ever made In
the South has been olosed in Sheffield,
AU. Col. W. W. Duncan and associates
secured the entire assets of the Sheffield
Land, Iron and Coal Company, the capi
tal stock of whloh U $1,000,000, paid.
Col, Danean took It at 07 eenU. A new
company waa formed, with $5,000,000
■took, and over one-half the stook was
taken In an hour. There was also the
AUbama Security and Trust Company,
formed with $1,000,000 capital, paid up
in full. Three more furnaces will
soon ga Into blast. A complete system
of waterworks is pledged. A new hotel,
just completed, oosting $150,000, will be
opened.
It has long been thought that uo ma
chine could take the place of the brain
and fingers of a compositor in typeset
ting; but from the results attained by
the typesetting machines lately invented,
It seems that In this field also Inventive
genius will give the man a rest. F. J.
Smith, who operates a Merganthalcr
Linotype typesetting machine on the
Toledo (O.) Commercial, beat tne world's
record for maehlne composition Tuesday
night, setting 47,000 ems corrected mat
ter in exactly elghtjhours. He took the
regular run of copy for publication next
morning. His previous record was 45,-
900, made in Brooklyn.
The bill of Mr. Huff, of Bibb, provid
ing for the establishment and mainten
ance of a state normal college, to be lo
cated at Athens and operated as a branch
of the state university, waa considered.
Warm discussion was heard on both
aides of the bill. An aye and nay vote
resulted in a poll of 22 to 15, whloh
lacked one of being a constitutional ma
jority, whereupon President Mitcholl
voted in the affirmative, thus passing
themesaure. Georgia will haves nor
mal college. Well done for Bob Ifitoh-
eU.
