AT THE DEPOTS.
A BUSY SCENE PRESENTED SEVERAL
TIMES DAILY.
Th* General Appesrsnce of the Central
and S. A. & M. Paa«n*er Depot,a* Vlawad
by the Chronic Lounger—An Interesting
Study of Human Nature.
^^lOfelEY.
To a student of human nature the
train-time at a city passenger depot pre
sents a varied and Interesting study.
For perhaps thirty minutes before the
arrl ring-time the crowd begins to col
lect. Hacks roll up and stand in line,
the drivers chaffing each other and the
hotel porters. The lumbering express
wagon backs into its usual place, the
hones’ heads hanging in patience until
their drowsy master shall start back to
the office with bis heavy freight of per
ishable merchandise. The shifting en
gine moves to a sidetrack until the way
shall again be clear for Its monotonous
work, and stands hissing, with the en
gineer in his cab snatching a little rest
from his arduous labor. An elegant pri
vate carriage drives up, and the coach
man helps to alight the anxious mother
who ii sending her lovely young daugh
ter from her for the first time to enter
the distant college.
The drummer, with his overcoat,
hand-satchel and umbrella, atrolls up
and down the platform, calcu
lating the probable size of his
trip’s expense account and speculating
upon the chances of the bouse honoring
eo soon another draft upon it, for he
must stop over Sunday to see that dear
little girl who so fondly expects him,
even if it is 100 miles out of his way. An
old-fashioned country carriage is turned
up to the platform and a whole family
get out and gaze around with troubled,
bewildered eyes, the mother hastily
pulling aside the little boy who is almost
struck by the two train hands carrying
between them the immense cake of ice
which is to supply the approaching
train. The farmer lingers to give his
hired man some final instructions re
garding management of things in his ab
sence, thon gathering together his fright
ened flock pilots them into the waiting
room.
Two young girls in all tho radiance of
perfectly fitting fall costumes stand at
one end of tho platform chatting gaily
with three or four young bloods who
came with them to meet the sweot girl
friend who is to arrive on this train.
“RailroadF’ Tho ory is from tho pow
erful lungs of tho hotel porter. Every
thing is hurry and bustle. The express-
man wakes up, the farmer and bis
family rush from the waiting room in
frantio oxoitomont, while tho young
school girl’s golden head Is upon her
mother’s shoulder and tears are in the
loving parent’s eyes os she whispers
tender, soothing words to her darling
child.
The drummer pauses in his walk and
gazes upon tbs mother and daughter,
bis eyeB lose their expression of impa
tient disgust, and as he turns away they
take on a gleam of tender, reverential
sympathy, their beautiful grief is too
sacred for Intrusion. Hardened man of
the world as he is, deep down in the
wells of memory he sees a loving moth
er’s fsce, and hears her tearful tender
voice as her eon first left her,
There Is a rumble of approaohlng
wheels, the sound of the locomotive
whistle breaks upon the ear. The girls
on the end of the platform dance up and
down in excited glee, the hotel porters
and hackmen begin a maddening babble
vociferous shouting, the Incoming engine
rushes past and with the loud hissing of
the air brakes the train it at a standstill
The brakeman pnts the portable steps at
the exit of the coaeh and the smartly
uniformed conductor holds up’ hit hand
to help the radiant girl who le just com
ing ont, but the does not see him; with a
chorus of delighted exclamations and a
simultaneous flutter from two points
there only appear* to the observer a mass
of dainty fabric intermingled In ecstatic
embrace from whieh Issue three silvery
voices in frantio dialogue. The sobbing
mother clasps to her heart for a last
time the weeping girl, and, pulling her
veil over her tear-stained face, turns
sadly to her carriage. The farmer and
his family have long ago ruihed Into the
coach, and every one of them now have
their heads far out of tbs open windows.
The bell rings and the train begins to
move slowly; tbs drummer steps upon
the rear platform and, as It passes the
three girls, he bestows upon them a
cheerful wink, then turns and disappears
through the door.
The hacks are rolling back with their
passengers. Tbs girls leave the depot
three abreast—the new arrival In the
middle, to the utter discomfiture of their
attendant swains. All has grown still
about the station save for the ticking of
the telegraph instrument* In the dis
patcher’s office. The shifting engine
move* out from the sidetrack and re
turnee its monotonous work.

We want every mother to know that
croup can be prevented. True croup
never appears without a warning. The
first symptom is hoarseness; then the
child appears to have taken cold or a
cold may have accompanied the hoarse
ness from the start, After that a pecu
liar rough cougli is developed, which is
followed by the croup. The time to act
.is when the child first becomes hoarse; a
few doses of Chamberlain's Cougli Rem
edy will prevent the attack. Even aftisr
a rough cough lias appeared, the discaso
maybe prevented by using this remed,
as directed. For sale by W. C.
