A Children., Tex., special aays that tile new <42.000 court house of the county, was burned to the ground. The fire is .supposed to be incendiary. All the county records of both Childress and Cottle eouuties are total losses and will entail untold tronble to replace them. At Calcutta a dispatch received from Faizahad, near the northern frontier of Britisii India, says that the Russians nre retried to lie advancing in consid erable force toward Chinese Turkestan, and that (lie Chinese have no troops in tho neighboruood sufficient to oppose them. A Loudon dispatch says that two handsome volumes of poems written by John Raskin at various times when he was betweeb the ages of 7 and 28 have, just been published there. Tiny are interesting mainly as furnishing evi dence of the precocious genius of the author. A Cork dispatch says: John E. Red mond, Parueilite candidate for ike va cancy in the house of commons, caused by the deatii of -Charles Stewart Par nell, who arrived here, replying to an address of welcome, announced that he 8|Hike as “the elected leader of the par liamentary party. ” A Pittsfield. Mass., special says that tile town of Glendale, fifteen miles sonth of that city, received a heavy blow when the Glendale woolen mills, the only industry of the place, was de stroyed by fire. The fire wus discovered at 9 o’clock and the building was in ashes two hours later. A Berlin dispatch Bays: The Paascli pamphlet, arguing that the Czar is a madman, is one of the strongest publi cations ever issued from the press in Germany. The writer goes into the history of Russian rulers from the time of Ivan the Terrible and traces an in sane taint through the Romanoff dy nasty. A London dispatch says: The Onion steamer Wisconsin, Captain Werrell, which sailed from New York Oct. 11, for Queenstown and Liverpool, has not yet arrived at either port. The White Star line steamer Germanic, which ar rived at Queenstown from New York, reports that she saw nothing of the Wisconsin during her passage. A Philo. Miss., special says: Oil the night of the lull an attempt, was made to assassinate Dr. D. J. Rush and Mr. J. R. Winfield while they were travel ing the public road near Laurel Hill. They recognized tho wonld-lie assassin as George Slaughter, a negro. As a a consequence lie was shot to death by unknown parties a few days after. A Marshalltown, la., special says: Black diphtheria is spreading at an alarming rate in a Norwegian settle ment in Soldiers’ Valley, Harrison coun ty, fourteen persona having died of the disease. An Ottawa, Canada, special says : It is stated that the governor genernl has requested Premier Abbott to tnko steps lending to tile removal of the name of Sir Hector Langevin from the list of pnv.v councilors for Canada, at the sug gestion of the imperial government, in accordance with the precedent in Sir Charles Gilke’s case. The premier has promised to coll ider the reqnost. A Hiawatha. Kan., special silva: The leading and best ladies of this city have inaugurated a fight against the London Guyetv girls who are giving a series of perfoi mmces here. They have called npon i h i council and asked it to pre vent tne performance, bnt that body refused to interfere. They then armed themselves with pitoh-forks anil rakes, and scraped the bills from the boards, nnd declared the men who attended the ■how social outcasts. At Ban Francisco, the ateamship Oceanic brings late advices from Amoy, Chins, giving details of a terrible epi demic of cholera prevailing there, and hundreds of pcoplo have died. Many English and American missionaries have succumbed to the disease. Mrs. Mc Gregor, wife of Dr. McGregor of the Church of England mission, died of cholera on the 2d instant, and was buried the same day. She was sick only six hours. Chinese are dying by the hundreds. A Goshen, Ind., special says: Edward P. Field, formerly of this city, returned home from the west to remain, his wife and two children having eloped with a married man. The first wife of Field's father eloped in the same manner. The wife of George Field, his oldest son. did likewise, after which her husband drowned hiwsels. Since the return of hie brother David to his home be was nearly scalded to death, and Angnst Field recently had an arm and leg broken in Kansas. Near North Hampton, O., a large black)nake dropped from a limb of a tree and coiled itself aronnd the neck of Joseph Gaines, who was standing un der it. The young man threw np a corn-cutter he was nolding in his hand and with great effort tore the reptile loose, bat until he was almost strangled and considerably scared. He overtook it as it crawled awey and cat it into 'several pieces. It measured five feet four inches in length. A Louisville. Ky., special says: The trustees of Elisabethtown hare sued the Chesapeake and Ohio and Southern Railroad company and Newport Newt and Mississippi Valley Railroad com pany for (MOO,000 damage* caused by the removal of the company’s shops from that town. The town in 1608 gave |?8,000 toward the construction of the road upon the condition that the shop* should be permanently located there. The shops were removed to Paducah about five years ago. A Little Bock, Ark., special ssys: Two mail pooches, containing a num ber of registered packages and several hundred letters, were stolen from a mail car on the Little Bock and Mem phis railroad. The robbery was not discovered until several hours later.
