Tub bill placing the express and tele graph companies under tho supervision of the commission has gone into elTcct, and tho railroad commission notified these companies to submit rates. Atlanta is in holiday attire now. The great Piedmont exposition is in full blast. Atlanta is prosperous because her people are all loyal to Atlanta. Co operation and unity win in the long run. Editor Ciikuiy of tho Fort Valley Enterprise, who was lately an Albanian blmsolf, says: "Albany is to hare two new daily papers, a morning and even log edition. Somebody is fixing to lose money.” According to the Cincinnati Enquirer there is in Ohio an 8-year old girl who never beard of God. She Is perfectly familiar, though, with the name of Mc Kinley, and knows all about American tin plate. Tub old home of the late Gov. Q V. Johnson, at Johnson station on the Cen tral railroad, between Bartow and Davis boro, was burned Tuesday morning be tween 2 and 3 o'clock. Dr. Herscliell V. Johnson, a son of the late Judge H. V. Yes, but although Judge Crisp weighs b quarter of a ton, liis finest Impressions will not bs made simply by his avoir dupois. (fo has a brain that will out weigh all the balance of him, as Tom Kecd will find out when Crisp begins to count bis quorum of Democrats. Hon. Henry Watteiison says: “But truly, if the skies should rain silver, if silver dollars should he heaped up in the valleys so thattlioao who are making such an ado about more money could fill their sacks and baskets and could carry it away with them, It would, under the present tariff system find itself back to the pieaent custodians of the wealth of the country, looting the farmer as poor at over." John Buev, the deposed manager of the Adams Express Company, began with its foueders, Mr. Adams and Wm. Dinsmore, both now dead, in a cellar on Broadway, at the time James Gordon Bsnnett and lloraeo Greeley were estab lishing their great newspapers. Patrick Family was also then In a basement on Nassau street, establishing the American News Company. All were poor when they began and struggled hard; bat every one of them succeeded In msking many millions. An Atlanta paper observed In its Tuesday’s Issue: "There should be a full delegation of Georgia editors to morrow, (yesterday), at the unveiling of the Grady monument,” and that paper "would be gratified to see a full delega tion of the country press In attendance on tho exercises." The committee of arrangements thought differently. That committee did not want any editors of the Georgia country press at the exer cises; and so did not Invite one of these editors to be there.—'Tribane of Romo. The New York Timet publisher as a genuine sensation, that while Mrs. Lease, of Kansas, has been hurling anathema at corporations and railroad kings, she travels all over Kansas on (me passes. That's nothing, there were central secret of railroad wreckers la the Georgia Legislature thst did worse than that; they not only traveled on free pastes ever the railroads thsy sought to destroy, bat they drew mileage from the state treasury that was appropriated for the tele purpose of paying thsir railroad, fane. Tbe late Albert Lamas, formerly of the Xaeoa Telegraph, so nearly resem bled Blaine that their photographs were frequently mistaken one for tho other. In W -n A CONDITION, NOT A THEOBT. Here Lies a Theory: at 8 p. m.—“Mrs. Cleveland, I have noticed s woful popu lar ignorance of the effect* of narcotics upon children. Now, my dear, I have determined to carry out my theory re garding the rearing of children. You will, therefore abstain ffom ever giving Ruth any ayrupe, paregoric or like stuffs," shrewdly surmises the Memphis Appeal. “All right, Grover, dear. I shall throw away all the sedative medicines, shall I?” “Certainly, Mrs. Cleveland, certainly. Throw that physic to the dogs I will bo odo man who will show enough prac tical interests in human welfare to op pose, by prccopt and example, all stupe fying of iufsntilu brains with poisonous drugs.” And Here Comes a Condition: at 3 a m.—“Mrs. Cleveland, I do wish you would get up and look for the paregoric or something else to make this calliope go to sleep. I am tired ot this noc turne.” “Why, Grover, you know you told me to throw away tho paregoric and sooth ing syrup. Your theory—” “Kxcuso mo, Mrs, Cleveland, but it is a condition not a theory that confronts now. No paregoric in the house? That’s nice, I suppose I’ll have to jig this out until daylight. Oh, that ntino enemy would have a baby. I’d give the vote of the New York delegation to see bald-headed Dave Bill prancing around like I am, and no paregoric in the house. ‘Uusli-a-bye, baby, on the tree top.' ” TUB CUI PHI CONVENTION. 1 he college secret fraternities are holding conventions, and having ban quets most numerous just now, nnd among those soon to take place I* that of tbe Chi Phi Fraternity in Atlanta on November 12 and 13. The convention will assemble Thurs day November 12th, and will bo wel comed by Judge A. E. Calhoun of At lanta. That evening i» reception will be tendered complimentary to the Frater nity. On Fiiday evening tbe annual banquet will be held at the Kimball houee, when tbe convention oration will be delivered by it. W. Patterson, Esq., of Macon, Ga., and the convention poem by L. L. Knight, Esq. It is the purpose to make tho conven tion a grand social reunion of Chi Phis from all eections; and through Mr' C. F. Rice chairman of the committee of ar rangements is conveyed to all members of the fraternity everywhere the enthu siastic anil unanimous Invitation of the Atlanta Chi Phis to bo present There are several members of the fra ternity in Americas among the Alumni of Athens and Emory, who will nodoubt m:iko it convenient to attend. A coItItKHdonDENT of the Macon Tele graph in Atlanta says that notwithstand ing that the Whitfield bill has received the approval of the governor and is now a law, the Southeastern Tariff Associa tion may continue to exist (or somo time to come yet. When the Whitfield hill passed, it was generally thought that it moant tlie speedy death of the South eastern Tariff Association. Its aim was to prevent pools or combinations of In surance companies, and the Inaurance men themselves accepted It as a matter of course that the tariff association, so far as its operation in Georgia is con cerned, would be compelled to dissolve. But under Comptroller General Wright’s view, the Southeastern Tariff Associa tion may go on unmolested for yean, notwithstanding tbe Whitfield law, un- leaa complaint U made against some company In It. Even then It muit be shown that the affeot of tbe association la to defeat or lessen competition. Tbe Insurance men claim that It doe* not bnt really reduces rates and therefore the new law may not destroy the associ ation after all. “New Yorb la Importing English bar mslds. An English bsrmaid, with a red nook nnd mole on her upper Up, Is beautiful sight. Ward McSwallow tail's four hundred wiU probably begin to infest the barrooms.” Editor Howell, it may be surmised from this paragraph, never saw n genuine KogUsh barmaid on her native heath. They are selected for their good looks: and as a class are the prettiest women In England. The most faultlessly beautiful woman the writer of this ever saw was an English barmaid la the Colonial Exhibition In London In 1886. Editor Batnb of Augusta has a aly way paying backhanded compliments. He taye: “Mr. John T. Clayton of Co lumbus has secured a patent on a water wheel which may make a revolution.” “May make a revolution" la good, for a wheel that Is patented for the very purpoee ol revolving In great style. ‘Georgia will indeed be prond of Cecil Gabbett when be becomes general man ager of the Chicago St Northern rail road.” Does that mean that the farther Mr. Gabbett gets from Georgia the prouder Editor Bayne feels?
