THE CITY HAS CLOSED THE CON TRACT, And • New Pump WIU Be Put lu nt the Station Which Will Have a Serving Capacity of I,.VN),ooo Oallone of Water Per Dey. The city has closed the contract with the famous II. R. Worthington pump concern of N'ewr York, and in about two months will have in place one of their new compound pumping machines which will develop a service capacity of 1,500,000 gallons of wator per day, or a capacity fifty per cent, greater than that of both the machines now in use. One of I he present pumps now in the station will be removed to make room for the new machine, and will probably be con nected with the < three neep wells upon the station property and will be able to furnish an additional half million gal lons, making a total altogether of 2,500,- 400 gallons of daily water supply . Americas is a rapidly growing city and this improvement will come none too soon, ns during the past summer there was barely a sufficiency of water for public needs and anything in tlio way of a conflagaration might have assumed serious proportions, as the available supply of water would soon have been oxhausted. But fortunatoly this did not occur. Amerlcus is marvolously free from serious (ires, and although our (ire do- department is perhaps as good as any volunteer organization of the kind in the state, every possible guard and pro vision should be made against the occur rence of a serious blaze. A system of electric alarms should be placed through out the city. This Is very important, as a few minutes loss of time in locating and reaching a Are has occasioned the the burning of many mil lion dollars worth of property which otherwise could have been saved. Cities like Amerlcus enjoying a re markable lnfrequeney of disastrous Ares have before now been thereby lulled in to fancied security and been obliged to stand helpless and witness the consum ing of business blocks and residences, when by taking proper precantlons all might have been saved. Then whon the horse is gone they think about locking the stable door. Fires, as a usual thing, don’t giro any warning as to the periods of their visita tion, but are liable to occur at any time and after gaining muoh headway are dif- Acult to get under control even by the best of department facilities. A good electric alarm system is of as muoh Importance as the engines and trucks and Amerlcus should have one. PRBSONAI. PAKAOBAFHS. Movements In the Social nod Business Circles of Americas. Mark Twain, in ono of Ilfs inimitable works, says: “You may boast of pretty statuary, lovely paintings, beautiful see nery and other things too numerous to meution which are pleasing to the eye, but the prottiest thing on God’s green eartli is a pretty woman," and he might well have added that the sweetest article on this footstool is a sweet girl. Most girls are sweet and all girls love candy. Most every girl has an abiding knowledge that at least one manly young hoart beats for her alone, and the ownor of this manly heart always wishes to demonstrate his adoration by sending to his bright particular star somo little of fering which he thinks she will appre ciate, and to all these Dr. W. C. Russell, at the Pharmacy, can offer something peculiarly catchy in the way of lino con- feotions. Realizing the need of novelty In this line ho has secured the sole agen cy for Amerlcus in handling the unex celled goods sent out by Nunnally, the Atlanta confectioner, and an Inspection will convince the buyer that they are in every way equal to Huyler’s with the advantage of a certainty of being fresh, as Dr. Russell rocoives a new consign ment every week.
