John Templo Graves goes to Xew York at the Invitation of Governor Hill to moke speeches in the campaign in that state. Senator Pasco of Florida attended as a delegate, the meeting of the Flori da slate alliance. The Ocala platform was indorsed but the Senator voted against it. Uh. Robert Bonner is not at all cast down by the fact that Sunol has carried oil the laurels, and lowered the record of Haud S. He owns both horses and ia proud of their achievements. Chmjxcey M Depew says that a thorough study of Macaulay's Essays gives him that turn of thought and happiness of expression which hare made him such a success as an after din ner speaker. Vast crowds sre thronging to the va rious fair, now in progress, and the oth ers to follow this week will be as well patronized; and yet there is still aery In some quarters that there is no money in the country. Tuk Hon Ignatius Donnelly is accused of corruption, and his suit of libel 'agriast bis accusers is now being tried. The issue of it will determine whether Mr. Donnelly Is aBaconion in his system of financial otbics.—New York Sun. STEADY 1MI MOVEMENTS THROUGH OUT THE SOUTH. The Manufacturer's Record, of Balti more, of October 2 4, in reviewing the industrial progress of the South, says: “Reports from all parta of the South show a very general improvement in financial matters, almost unprecedented cotton receipts and heavy foreign ship ments, a somewb at stronger feeling in iron, and fairly liberal sales both of charcoal and coke iron, and a marked change for the better in the disposition of capital to seek investment in tills sec tion; railroads are crowded with busi ness, and in some places cars cannot be had fast enough to more the traffic offered; manufacturing enterprises of all kinds are running on full time and earn ing fair, and in many cases large profits. In general industrial matters the week lias been a busy one, and a large number of new enterprises hare been organized. At Sheffield, Ala., some big doals, in volving the investment of several million dollars, have been consummated; in West Virginia three coal mining compa nies with an aggregate capital stock of about $1,000,000. Three phosphate min ing companies have been organized in Florida; a (50,000 bottling company at Atlanta, Ga.; a (20,000 iron ore mining company near Cedartown; eleetric light works at Fort Valley, Ga.; a (100,000 water and electric light works at Mari etta, Ga.; a (25,000 brick company at Buena Vista, Ga., and a (150,000 land improvement company at Atlanta, Ga.” Two o' t ir largest and most enthusi astic Democratic meetings held in Ohio were in the cities of Cincinnati and 'Cleveland, where it was said the greatest bitterness existed among Democrats against Campbell. The Republicans are -not getting very much comfort out of ithe alleged hostility to Governor Camp bell. The Timkh-Rrcoiidku has received the first Issue of the A'bany Dally Her aid, tile new venture upon the stormy seas of journalism. Editor McIntosh is a good fellow; and in spite of the pros pects The Timer-Recorder wishes him success. He will no doubt do a great deal more for the public than the public will do foi him. Kcoknk Garcia, the paying teller o the Louisiana National Bank, ia a de faulter In the sum of (100,000. Tills was a great surprise to the banking and commercial circles of New Orleaus. Tin defalcation will not in the slightest de gree impair the solvency of the bank, which ia one of the strongest in the South and fnlly able to stand it. Secretary Blaine has been inter viewed on bis way to Washington to re sume his official duties, and he declares that ho ia enjoying excellent health and an ap;>etfte, the demands of which lie finds some difficulty In meeting. This is a neat way of Intimating to his friends that they can go right ahead now and boom bim for the 'presidential nomlua tlon. The Times thinks the criticisms of the Georgia legislature by the press of the state have been entirely too severe. The Times baa felt It to. be a duty to speak frankly on the same subject, and the criticisms wbicb It thus made may have seemed severe; but the Times does not fail to appreciate the fact that the legislature has been an earnest body, really and honestly trying to do right— Brunswick Times. It Is claimod that (50,000 a day Is wa gered by women at the Garfield l'ark race track in Chicago, and that numbers of women faint away after every race. Also tbat women barn been known to pawn their husband's clothing to get money to go to the track and gamble, So profitable has the business bccoma to the management that they are arranging to put heaters into the grand and keep tired plugs pelting around the track In the snow and sluih all '/inter. The Augusta Chronicle is going to build e new office, with all the modern Improvements and conveniences. The building will be four stories high, and will be fitted up in elegant style. The Western Union Telegraph Company has leased the ground floor for ten yeas, and will also use a part of the second floor. The Chronicle though over a century old is one of the most ably edited papers In the South and in its new bouse is good for another century. The Colnmbua Iron Works bare just completed a two-story wooden structure on the bank of the river above the wharf, to be used In making expert- meuti with different kinds of ice-mak ing machinery. }(r. Abe EUis, who formerly owned the Macon Ice Works, is poshing the work along on bis 30-ton let factory in Columbus, which be says will bo in operation by the first of Jan- mry, This will Disks three lee factor ies In thi-.t city besides the browary. AGREED TO DISAGREE. The creditors' committee of Moses Brothers, Montgomery, Ala , had a final meeting Triday night Messrs. Moses Brothers were present and submitted a proposition which the committee re jected; the committee then made their proposition and Messrs. Moses Brothers declined it It looks as if the matter will have to be settled by the Cbauncery court, much to the regret of the creditors, who hoped that some solution might be reached that would save the expense of a settlement in the courts. nOfV SHALL WE HANK? Mr. Edward Atklnaon has written a letter on banks and banking to The Bal timore Manufacturers' Record. He does not reach definite conclusions, but be does make some valuable suggestions. He agrees tbat the national bank ia not equal to the needs of the people. It ia important tbat the country should be out of debt, and the country cannot keep its bonds outstanding just In order to give the banka collateral for business. Mr. Atkinson also contends tbat the government should withdraw from cir culation its own notes, known as green backs or legal tender notes, "which are only evidence* of debt incurred by way of a forced loan during the war.” They are a bad form of circulating medium, because tbeir inflow and outflow corres ponds only to the Income of tbe govern ment by way of taxation, and to tbe out goes of the government in its expendi ture. These periods of income and out go do not correspond to tbe ebb and How of business transactions. It follows that this kind of currency cannot, and does not adjust itself to the necessary conditions of business.—Augusta Chron icle. A xkwsi-ai'kii office is a placo where all men come at some time in their lives. Whether it be to bring a marriage an nouncement, or a funoral notice; to ad vertise a lost dog, or a pocket book found; to learn the latest election re turns, or find out who won the suburban; to request tbat his name be left out, or to “see the editor" for putting it in; to work a free advertisement, or to read his own proof; to ask for old exchanges, or to make a few friendly suggestions about how to run the paper; to modestly put in an announcement for office writ ten in his own hand, but signed “Many Voters,” or to tell the city editor that “I used to be a newspaper man myself;’ to bring a waiter from the church fair, or to toll about a lynching bee—at some tlmo in his life, and for somo purpose or other; nearly every man living visits a newspaper office.—Augusta Chronicle. It ik said tbat great curiosity prevails in London with regard to Mrs. Parnell's papers. Before the discovery of the in trlgue between Mr. Parnell and Mrs. Ofibea, she acted as tho medium of com munication between Mr. Gladstone and Mr. Parnell. It is said that she now holds letters of a very compromising character from Mr. Gladstone and other prominent politicians, and that since they can no longer do Mr. Parnell any harm, she intonds to publish them as tending to vindicate her character. Mrs. Parnell is liable to create a sensa tion, as sbe has nothing to lose in the way of reputation by publishing any of Parnell's private correspondenoo. It is however, difficult to see bow political letters compromising Gladstone and others can possibly vindicate the private character of Mrs. Parnell. Information from New York regard ing the recent railroad scoop is to tbe effect that several inquiries have been made in the Richmond Terminal office lately about the reports tbat General Thomas, of tbe East Tennessco, would be made president of tbe Terminal sys tem at an early day. General Thomas denied these rumors when they were brought to his attention, and said there was no foundation for them. Other officers of the Terminal system also give positive denials of tho story. So it seems, according to the Tiibune of Rome that the Georgia editors were not tbe only ones who were snubbed by tbe “Grady monument committee.” Tbe snub was generously extended to tbe representatives of several New York newspapers who came along with Gov ernor Hill to report tbe ceremonies at the unveiling of the Grady monument. These press representative* somehow couldn’t understand the treatment they received, end sent red hot excoriation* of the committee back to their respect ive papers.
