t THE AMER1CUS DAILY TIMES-RECORDER: TULSDAY, OCTOBER 27, i s»i. addresses workingmen. John Dillon Appeal! for Their Support and Party Succesa. Duolin, Oct. 96.—John Dillon, mem ber ol parliament for East Mays, ad dressing a demonstration of working- men at Dunkirk, made an appeal for their support. He dilated upon the stupidity of trying to quarrel with Eng land after all the trouble and time oc cupied in securing her friendship. It was a terrible thing to ask Ireland, with her steadily dwindling population, to break with Gladstone at the risk of postponing home rule for perhaps an other decade. A Mr. Kedmond coulirnot pretond that Ireland would unite under his leader ship. If this spirit of faction is per mitted to spread before two years were over they would have as many parties as there are Irish memliers, and be in the same position as they were fifteen years ago. when every man was f»r himself. No success is possible while the minority refused to be governed by the majority. He believed that Glad stone was sincere in his home rule ideas, but if his bill were inadequate, lie (Dillon) would be the first to de- nounee it, an l oust the Liberals from power if necessary. AN ARKANSAS SENSATION. A Land A cent Who Is Found to lit Embezzler. St. Louis. Oct. 20.—A special to The Republic from Van Buren, Ark., says a decided sensation was created by the report that J. M. Weaver, who litis hitherto borne an irreproachable reputa tion, and being a strict church member, is an embezzler. Weaver has been a land agent for the Little Rock and Fort Smith railroad for a number of years. His duties consisted of selling land to settlers, receiving part payment and transmitting receipts and papers to the general offices of the company at Mor- riltowu. After the first payment to Weaver, according to instructions, he should have informed the settlers that they must pay the balance direct to the railroad company. Instead of doing so, however, it is alleged that Weaver con tinued to collect the money. The rail road people fiually notified the settlers that unless they paid up immediately they would bo evicted. This brought matters to a focus, and revealed the shortage, which will probably run into the tens of thousands. The Pope Writes a Letter. Rome, Oct. 20.—The pope has writ ten a letter to the archbishop of Aix, the prelate who is to be prosecuted by the French government for disregard ing the circular of M. Faillines, the minister of public worship, enjoining the archbishops of France not to leave their dioceses without the consent of the government, an order which was issued as a result of the recent popalar manifestations at Rome against the French pilgrims who were said to have behaved in a reprehensible uunner at the Pantheon. In this letter the pope says that he deplores the fact that the Roman rioters were allowed to "indulge with impunity in every kind of license, profaning the clrarch, insulting the Pontiff and maltreating pilgrims. 1 ' The pope adds that he hopes these indict ments will not lead to "something more calamitous and lamentable. ” Town Destroyed by Fire. Paris, Oct. 28.—Advices have jnst been received here from Meiringer, in the canton of Ber, Switzerland, to the effect that the town has been almost en tirely wi]>ed out of existence by fire. The conflagration was funned by a high wind, and the flames swept away street after street with frightful rapidity. Appliances of the corporation for extin guishing fires proved to be of no use whatever. The railroad station, post- office, telegraph office and nearly all business places and residences were ut terly destroyed, and in the briefest space of time. The Victoria hotol and Wildermmin’s hotel are the only two structures to mark the situation of this once prosperous country resort of 8,(100 inhabitants, and they were only spared owing to their isolation from other buildings. He Refuses to Hear Hie Case. Madison, Wis„ Oct. 28.—Judge Sie- becker announced that he wunld not try the interest suits against the state treasurer because of certain reasons, which he rofnsed to moke public at this time. The inference is tnut the judge has been approached in the way of a bribe. Attorney General O'connor is dumbfounded and is loud in his denun ciation of the party or purties who have mude it impossible for an upright judge to try the treasury suits. Judge Sie- becker states that if made known at this time his reasons for withdrawing it would- be impossible to get a fair and impartial trial of the cases in the state of Wisconsin. He promises develop ments hereafter. FOOTLIGHT FLAShES. Great Falls. Mon., is to have a 1200,000 opera boose. An attempt is being made in Milan to institute a free theater. Ao Australian girl named Menk Meyer, who not only plays music but writes It, has been favorably received in Europe. The late Israel Fleishman, who was the manager of the Walnut street and Park theaters In Philadelphia, did his first the atrical work as an usher. A Chicago grocer is said to have such confidence in the dramatic genius.of Mrs. Leslie Carter that he has consented to advance money for her second tour. She lost aliout $80,000 last season. Mrs. Mary Wray is eighty-seven years old, and proliably the oldest actress living In this country. She is an Englishwoman. A daughter, Ada, is the wife of the well known comedian, John Wild. Sarilou’s first comedy was n failure. He was a youth of twenty-three when lie made this first venture into a field in which he afterward liecame famous, aud was at that time a teacher of mathematics.. it has lieeu gossiped lately, says a writer in the New York Herald, that Miss Lillian Kussell was soon to marry Mr. Carl Streit- niann, tile tenor whom Mr. Amberg brought to this country a year or so ago. Rose Coghlan and Robert Mantell are no longer under the sheltering wing of Au gustus i'itou. That manager has renewed Ids contract with Scitnlan, however, and has, besides, his stock company and “The Power of the Press," all of which will be on the road this season. It is computed by a French contemporary that Sarah Hernhardt lias earned 6,916,000 francs during her professional career of a quarter of a century. From her first American tour she made a clear, profit of 300,000 francs, and It U expected thut the pecuniary gain of her present tour will Amount to 200,000 francs.' FLOWER Af*D TREE. A rose, cultivated til a Philadelphia hot house, measures seveuteen inches in width. An orange tree, only four Inches high, at Yuba City, Cal., has borne a perfectly form ed orange ubout the size of a currant. There are certain plants In the tropics which grow suspended from limbs of trees, ind in other positions, showing that they derive little or no nourishment from the earth. On the summit of Ben Lomond may be seen the smallest tree that grows iu Great Britain; ft is kuown as the dwarf willow, and Is, when mature, unlyabout two inches in height. From India comes the khus-kbus gnus, the fibrous roots of which yield a very pe culiar and pleasing perfume. In India the leaves are manufactured Into screens for doore and windows, which, when wet. dif fuse a refreshing scent Attorney Henry C. Dillon, of the Kaweah colony, says no human agency can cat down a Sequoia giganteu and no sawmill in this country could slice one up Into boards. Dynamite le the only mean of destroying them, and the debris is then useful only aa firewood. The cultivation of the India rubber tree on the Island of Trinidad Isreceivlug much attention. A few trees of different varie ties were Imported some years ago and were placed in the botanical gardens. The results have shown that the soil and cli mate are remarkably favorable to their cultivation. The annual increase of the forests by natural growth, representing the interest which we are at liberty to draw without impairing tile principal, exceeds In the United States alone ten times the value of the gold and silver output of this country aud is worth more than three times the product of all our mineral and coal mines put together. Seventeen cattle have already died of the disease, and many others are sick. A novel remedy has been applied to the sick ones, and with apparent success. It is that of sawing off the hums of the affected animals. This was done by consent of the Hu mane society and the jndge of the po lice court. Cattle which had not eaten lor many honre, began eating within an ion after the operation. The treat ment lias not been tested long enough to determiiio the ultimate result of it. A Jail Delivery. The Jewllsh or tarpon rises to the sur face every few niluutes to breuthe, and it lias an air bladder eighteen Inches long. The sting of the scorpion is precisely like the fung of the rattlesnake aud performs its deadly work on the same mechanical principles. The Xcrobates Agnssizil, the grass eat ing turtle of the Mojave desert, Is said to be the only one of the turtle species which lives by- grazing like a horse or an ox. A parrot in New York has had more than twenty owners aud has scared each one out of his wits by screaming “fire I" at an early hour in the morning, until the whole house was aroused.
