What will happen next! Hon. Stkuuen Thomas, one of the oldest and moat prominent citizen, of Athens ia dead. Florida claims that she will have the moat novel and attractive state building at the World’s Fair. WuATprofiteth it a man if he get free sugar and payetb an increase for his winter undergarments? Toe Central railroad is daily now car rying crowds of visitors bound to Uacon and Atlanta for the expositions In pro gress, and the only difficulty ia the lack of cars. Ip you want to know what real fun is, get enormously rich, make your will and three months after death come back and ace how many kinds of an old fool your heirs will prove you to bo in any court in the country. Blaine’s return to Washington will make Somebody—with a big bat—sick, for ho was not wanted at this stage of the game. However, even if ho is a Ke- publican, Blaine’s got sense enough to know what he’s about. The session of the grand lodge of Free and Accepted Masons in Macon is in pro gress, and this noble order will add much to every institution in Macon, for there is nothing on earth that adds more to ita enlightenment than the perfect procepts ,0/ this ancient order. The protected manufacturers might have been good enough to raise wages In at least one or two instances, just for the time of the McKinley campaign; but these greedy capitalists haven’t once thought of doing it. Perhaps they think they do enough whon they furnish cam paign money. The failure of the electric lights last night put a great many peoplo in a bad light—speaking literally—for they bad to work 1/ lamp light, it seems strange that the connections or dynamos or whatever they ore can’t be kept in con dition to alwaya afford the blessing given f>y a good light. “No other country,” writes the Presi dent, "surpasses us in the inventive genius of its citizens, or In the business sagacity of its capitalists." If wo are so very smart, bow is it that we must be forever dependent upon an exorbitant tariff? How is it that our industries roust always be Infants? The stranding of John Lawrence Sul livan, the Boaton (esthetic slugger, iu Australia is a good thing for some American athletes, for if lie gets back he’ll be so “bad” that he’ll break some body’s neck, so he says. Col. Sullivan has seen his best days and nobody need be afraid of him—that is, If they are far enough away. Accordino to late dispatches, the life of an editor in Dublin, Ireland, is not a happy one. Tho people, with a big P, threaten*to blow up one poor fellow out there who represents the McCarthies. The odltor of the Billville Banner or the Arizona Kicker wouldn't take sucli mat ters to heart. They'd simply look up fresh cartridges and await events. The stand taken by the Northern So ciety, of Atlanta, in regard to the blub- beringa of Elliott Sheppard, the brain less editor of the New York Mall and Express, ia worthy of the men who, coming from the cold north have made their homes in Atlanta. Nothing leas than such a direct refutation could be expected of the men who compose that society. Tub attempts of certain cynics to prove that women are not the equals of men are ridiculous and laughable. For ex ample, there is a female brigand In Sor- vla. She can spread terror among the people in the most approved fashion, and in the matter of robbery can outdo the work and outdare the daring of any professional gentleman' in the same In dustry. Tbit lovely creature has al ready been accused of fourteen murders, which ought to give her high rank among first-class rogues,—New York Herald. Tnis Atlanta Journal published that Col. Emmett Wommack had, or would certainly resign the position of solicitor- general of the Flint circuit. Col. Wom ack speaks very emphatically to the contrary: “There Is not s word of truth in the artiole published in the Journsl that I Intend resigning the position of solicitor-general of the Flint circuit,” said Col. Womack last night to a Con stitution reporter. “I cannot Imagine bow the report originated." he contin ued. "I absll not resign."—Atlanta Constitution. JUDGE CRISP IN OHIO. Hon. Charles F. Crisp, Georgia's fa mous Congressman, arrived in tlic city at an early hour tills forenoon and was driven direct to tho Neil House, where a Post representative met him shortly af ter his arrival. Mr. Crisp ia a remarka bly fine looking gentleman, above the medium height, with a pleasing address, whose lound, full face, adorned by a mustache, gives one but a faint concep tion of tlie great reserve force and ora torical power he possesses and which lias made him one of the foremost statesmen of tlie age. Speaking'of Ilia reception in Ohio Mr. Crisp said: “f have marie eight speeches in your sis * and have been greeted ■ verywhere by large audience*, and have bad a very delightful visit. I have found the people of Ohio hoe- pitiblo and kind, both Hepuullcane end Democrat*, and (hall ever kindly remember tbefr treatment of me. “Ae fai as my observation goes I find the Ohio Democracy united and entbusl istlc and feeling confident of v.ctory lor the entire ■latetlckei, while not unmindful of the ad vantages to be gained an] the me sally lor securing control of your elate legislature, and I be levu the party will succeed in both Instances. I have noted with pleasure the Interest taken by the Industrie! classes of Ohio In the discussion of the tariff question, which * nly needs to be understood by the people to se cure a verdict against the measures enacted by Ihe Republican party In the Interest of a few millionaires, and of which M»Jo- McKin ley Is now the acknowledged and only cham pion of any consequence." In reference to the speakership contest, In which it Is generally believed that Mr. Crisp’s chances are at least os good as the best, the gentleman modestly de clined to have anything to say except that the contest now being waged in Ohio is of paramount importance and that Ilia whole time and attention is now directed to contribute whatever lies in his power to aid in a triumph for Ohio’s grand and brilliant governor, whose suc cess is prayed for by the Demociacy of the whole country.—Tlie Columbus Ohio Post. The examination of the New York Life Dearly completed—Its condition and management vindicated to tho discom fiture of ita slanderers—An interview with the examiner, Hon. Michael Shan non-Deputy insurance superintendent of New York stato. Of an interview with Hon. Michael Shannon in The Spec tator of October 22d, that paper says: “Mr. Shannon has so far completed his examination regarding tho financial con dition of the company that he states un equivocally that it is entirely solvent, and has a substantial surplus overall liabilities, and this statement he desires to go forth to the holders of policies in the company, some of whom have been led to doubt their value. That every contract of assurance entered into by the company can be faithfully carried out; is already demonstrated by the ex amination thus far made. As this is the essential point at issue, it gives us great satisfaction to make the announcement in this official mannor so far in advance of the publication of tlio complete re port of tlie department. The solvency of tlie company being thus officially pro claimed, policy-holders und tho public can bo content to let all chargos of a personal nature await the final official report of the Inquiry, always bearing In mind that It is impossible to separate the present high positlou and status of tho company from the management that has produced such magnificent results.” THE PIOI1T IN OHIO. The clana have met in Ohio and every inch of ground Is being hotly contested by both parties, eacli claiming victory It ia now thought that the farmers are the uncertain quantity, and the way they go so will go the coming election. Tlie big cities will be the fighting grounds of the Republicans. Money will bo used without stint, and the bosses hope to control tlie vast floating vote of Toledo, Columbus and Cincinnati, and thus overcomo tlio large Democratic gains in the ru-.al dist lets. Judge Crisp has put in some powerful strokes for Gov. Campbell and tho suc cess of Democracy. And unless the tide turns, Democracy will come around all right in November. Offlco In Barlow hioca, room 0 Feb. 0, tt From tho report of the conference which was held at the White Houie on Friday last for the purpose of consider ing tho outrageaat Valparaiso it appears that the administration Is disposed to be governed by what ought to bo regarded as a golden rule of diplomacy, namely, to allow others to do unto you os you do unto them. In its refusal to mako nny reparation for the massacre of tho Ital ians at New Orleans tlie Harrison admin istration adopted a policy which it can not consistently depart from even in dealing with England, Franco aDd Ger many. And with no moro consistency can it demand of them, or of tho feeblest powers, that reparation or apologies be made for mob violence against citizens of tho United States, unless connived at by the government of tho country in which the outrage Is committed. Ameri cans visiting foreign countries shuuld bear in mind that the American llag ceases to afford any practical protection after tlioy leave American soil. If they are not willing to rely on themselveaand can compromise with their consciences, their best policy Is to proclaim them selves subjects of her Brittanic majesty. —'Tlmca-Union. Thank Goodness, the United States is coming to the front. The government has actually demanded satisfaction for the killing of the sailora belonging to the U. S. cruiser, “Baltimore,” at San tiago de-Chile, through Minister Eagan, ne is, however, acting on Instructions from Washington, and if tho Chilian government sees fit to pay no attention to Minister Egan's demands, be will, perforce, have to await nnotlier cable gram. Ail the same the demand will be made. The spark from a passing engino Igni ted the cotton in the railroad yard at Forsyth, Ga., Monday, destroying 550 balea of the staple. The damage will not fall short of $25,000, and the entire loss will fall upon the Central railroad, as the cotton had passed out of the hands of the shippers.
