The Erie management have Issued a pri rate circular to their conductors to further Impress them with the necessity of seeing that the regulation requiring the rear hrakeman to go back with a flag when the train stops Is strictly adhered to A short time ago E. O. McCormick, gen , ra l passenger agent of the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton road, arranged for through car service between Cincinnati ami Mackinaw, and it is proving a popular line. The run is made in nineteen huurs. The largest locomotive yet bililt in Em rope ia forty six feet over all, with a total weight of eighty-four tons On a gradient of one foot in forty the engine can, by ex ercising its full traction power, move 800 tons, li was built at the Hirschau works in Munich Tlie Nickel i’Jate has a plan for accom mortaring its patrons in suburbau villages by issuing baggage traffic tickets, at prices ranging from live cents to fifty cent*, for the shipment of packages weighing from I to 400 pounds ou such trains ns do not car ry express cars The longest train of coal cars of which mention has been made passed over the Philadelphia and Heading railroad recent ly. Richard Puckett, a well known con ductor on the ismlsville and Nashville at Nashville, has is-t-n declared insane. He has been running on the lsmisville and Nashviilo and t.’liesapeake and Ohio roads for twenty years, hut his mind begun to fsil several months ago. The Big Pour people, since inheriting the forty-five miles of the old C., S. and U. road, between Columbus and Springfield, O., have practically rebuilt it. A numlier of curves have been taken out, heavier steel rail laid, bridges strengthened and a good deal of reballasting done. The Wabash road’s proposed connection from Chicago to Detroit only requires the building of 152 miles of road, from Chicago to Montpelier, from which point it has main line connection with Detroit of nine ty-six miles. This route will be shorter than the Michigan Central by forty miles. The New York, Lake Erie and Western mad crosses the track of the West Shore on s bridge, the approaches to which are bnilt on a trestle nearly 4.0U0 feet long. A force of men has filled the trestle la with dirt. It has taken over 115,000 cublo yards of earth to complete the lob, and bas cost about 880.000 The Toledo. St. Ixmls and Kansas City road has issued a new set of ntles for the government of employees, one of which re quires section foremen to make a very full report when stock Is killed. A diagram must be drawn upon the back of the re port, showing where the animal got on the track, where the body lay when found and what part ot the animal the train struck. HOW TO KEEP HEALTH. “The Fast Mall." A production of unusual magnitude will be given at the opera house this evening. Lincoln J. Carters superb scenic melodrama “The Fast Mail ” As its name indicates, It deals largely with the railroad in its incidents, but It pre sents an abundance of effects that are daring in their magnitude and admirable In their execution. The steamboat is said to be a wonder of clever conception and masterly mechanical work, and the railroad scene, with its trains' going at a terrific rate of speed, makes the stage seem like a piece of reality. The Ni agara Falls scene is wonderfully beauti ful, and it may safely be said Is more elaborate than anything of the kind ever before attempted In this city. There are a multitude of minor effects that con tribute to make the performance a reve lation of realitm. The whistles, bells and splashing are heard as the boat leaves the wharf. The sounds that tell us of an approaching train herald the approach of the freight and the fast mall train—the latter rushing by with people gazing from the window at the heroine who has just saved her lover’s life by fastening a letter to the mail pouch. The roaring of Niagara Falls is heard, and the mist that rises from it is shown vividly. The play is under the personal direction of L. J. Carter, the author. The cast is said to bo a capable one. The play is startling at times in the In tensity of its climaxes, and these, when presented with all the effects of the in tricate stage settings, bring the interest to a degree that is rarely attained even In tho melodrama. A large number of people are employed in the production, which is in many particulars plainly tho result of care and skill combined. The Courts. The remaining courts of this term In tho Southwestern circuit will be held as follows: Lee, Erst Monday in November. Macon, second and third Mondays In November. Sumter, fourth Monday in Novem ber. Or.o of the best ways to keep in good heslth is not to think or worry too much about it. If yon feel strong nnd well don’t Imagine that some insidious disease may he secretly attacking your couatttutiou if you arc aick enough to need any medi cine at all, beyond the simple remedies familiar hi all, you are sick enough to need the attendance of a physician By all means take as much exercise as you can, and be in the open air as much as possible. Outdoor life is the natural con dition of mankind, and the more one can have of it the better. Eat and drink what yon desire os long as it agrees with you. Your stomach knows pretty well what it can digest, l’lain, simple food Is desirable as a general thing, hut the luxuries of the table In moderation will do no barm. Always treat a common cold with great respect Ninety-nine times out of a hun dred it will get well any way, but the hun dredth cold if neglected may leHd to bron chills, pneumonia or consnmption. It is best to take no snch chances. Alcoholic beverages are not fit for hab itual use. They are true medicines and should only lie used like any other medi etnas—tinder the advice of a physician. As » regular beverage they can do no good, but will most certainly do barm Take all the sleep you can get, but re member that the necessary amount varies greatly for different persona Some most sleep at least nine hours, while others thrive under six. Only don’t rob yourself of what yon really need. The "mtdnlght oil" It. a terribly expensive illuminant to burn cither for purposes of labor or study Dr. Holmes has very truly said that If nine-tenths of all medicines—patent, pro prietary and otberwiaa—in the world were poured into the ocean It would be all the better for mankind and all the worse for tbe fishes, and the best physician can do little without goal nursing and thus aid nature in throwing off dlaease.—Monthly Bulletin , PHILOSOPHICAL COGITATIONS. Tile worst kind of a lie la an acted lie. Many men loaf under tbe pretense of tak care of their health. A wise man ia one who ancceaafully hldea lie lias weaknesses. A vn.ni cannot think of very mean thing! to «ay to his enemy, until the enemy la Kune. Patience may be found always where there Is hope, but It seldom abides where hope is not. The greatest quarrels In tbe world's bis- jury have been between persona who were formerly friends., Treat your frtand an ynn would a piece « furniture. Notwithstanding tho threatening as pect of the weather this forenoon the country people flocked to town in great numbers to take In Rentz and Co.’s cir cus, taking good care to have hogs fed and tho other chores done In time to get in and see the parade at 10 a. m. Bigger parades there have been, hut that of this morning was highly creditable. The op en dens of wild animals were wide open, the two bands blew as vigorously as they were expected to, and the elephants, camels, ponies, eto., deported themselves with becoming dignity. The open air exhibition after the pa rade was about what is usually seen, and tbe sideshow was particularly Interest ing and attractive. A good size audience witnessed the afternoon show and said it was good. It is a clean show, in 2 rings. Everybody can see all there is to be seen, and every act from that of the star rider to tbe least important specialty is well worth seeing. Careful observation failed to reveal anything but the most Irreproachable conduct on tbe part of Its employes. We all like to be well treated, whether It is at a hotel or circus, and polite attention and an evident desire to please will en sure success to any undertaking that de pends upon publio patronage. We want every mother to know that croup can be prevented. True croup never appears without a warning. Tbe first symptom is hoarseness; then the child appears to have taken cold or a cold may have accompanied the hoarse ness from the start, After that a pecu liar rough cough is developed, which is followed by the croup. The time to act is when the child first becomes hoarse; a few doses of Chamberlain's Cough Rem edy will prevent the attack. Even after a rough cough has appeared, the disease maybe prevented by using this remedy as directed. For sale by W. C. Russell. ItThenBsnywaa tick, we gave nerCastoria.
