When Charlemagne end hi* Knight* of
the Bound Table" were making war on the
Saracens, in Africa, it frequently happened
that Knights on either ride would tight in
ringlo combat for the honor of their re
spective armies. Tbe Saracens had been,
tor many years, the scourge—the dreaded
inraders —of Europe, and all waged war
threatens us, is that dread Invader, Can-
gumption.
Consumption fasten* its hold upon its vic
tims while they nro unconscious of its ap
proach. Dr. ripree’s Golden Medical Dis
covery has cured thousands of cases of this
most fatal of maladies. But it mu«fc bo
taken before* the disease is too far advanced
in order to bo effective. If taken in time,
and given a fair trial, it will euro, or money
said for it will lie refunded.
For Weak Lunjrs. Spitting of Blood, Short
ness of Brctth, Bronchitis, Asthma, eevero
Coughs, and kindred alTectious, it is an uuo-
qualed remedy.
For nil disease** that arise from n torpid

it doe*. It prevents ond cures by removing
the cause. It invigorates the liver, purifies
tho blood, r • irpcns tho appetite improves
digestion, n builds up both strength and
flesh, when : ducod below tho standard of
health.

This is the way
with the Ball corset: if you
want ease and shapeliness,
you buy it—but you don’t
keep it unless you like it.
After two or three weeks*
wear, you can return it and
have your money.
Comfort isn’t all of it
, though. Soft Eyelets, and
“bones” that can’t break or
kink—Ball’s corsets hare
both of these.

A WISCONSIN SENSATION.
Senator Sawyer ConnactaU With a Half
Million Snit.
MiiavaUKEE, Oct. ,HO.-Senator Phil-
etuj Sawyer’s name is being closely
coupled with a charge that ati attempt
has been made to influence the Judge
of the circuit court for Dane county in
tha suits to recover between $100,000
and $.700,000 interest on state fund* re
ceived by ex-state treasurers. Smator
Sawyer is defendant in one of thitse ac
tions, that against H. B. Harshaw As
bondsman Judge Siebecker refused to
try the case for the reason that circum
stances had arisen that made it impos
sible for hiiu to preside. Senator Saw
yer admits that he offered ex-Congress-
inan LaFollet a retainer to appear in
the case. LaFollett is a brother-in-law
of Judge Siebecker. One of the duties
assigned to LaFollett was to”sound”
the judge as to his feelings toward the
defendants. LaFollett rejected the re
tainer and related the circumstance to
Judge Siebtcker. Senator Sawyer de
clares that be weut no i art her than
this, and that he made no attempt to
influence the court in its decision, and
declares that he did not. LaFollett
»ad Siebecker were related. The at
torney general says he will push the
case against any person who has taken
any step toward corrupting tho court,
but mem ions no names. The affair is
the biggest political sensation in the
history of t*ie state.

Tampke. a young German employed by
Hartwig, Schrader & Co., wholesale
grocers at 848 W'asbingron street, has
been missing ever since July 27, and his
friends and relatives believe that lie is
dead. In July Tampke spent his vaca
tion at Coytsville, N. J. Oa July 27
he came to tbe city and went to his
boarding house, 100 East Tbirteentl
street. He has never been seen by any
one since that day.
Mrs. J. J. McCarthy, his land-lady,
says that nil of his things are in his
room just as he left them, and he took
nothing from the room at all. Tauipke
has a brother who is the captain of the
Anchor Line steamship Europa, tint the
one who mourns bis sudden disappear
ance more than any one else, probably,
is his intended wife. Miss Greta Schulz,
who lives nt 458 West Twenty-second
street. She met Tampke in January,
and they became engaged the following
month. They never bad a quarrel dur
ing their engagement. Tampke wanted
the mariiage to take place in March,
bnt Miss Schnlz asked that it be post
poned till this month. No one can give
the slightest reason for his disappear
ance. He had money which he inherit-
ed from his father, and he was of a
cheerful disposition.

who escaped from jail by braining his

his house in the north suburbs here.
He lias been here at home ever since

Ho gave his 15-year-old son a beating,
and threatened to kill him, and the boy
went to the officers and gave his father
away. A posse guarded the house all

Louisville, Oct. 80.—Judge Monfort
of the Franklin Circnit, rendered a de
cision in the suit brought by Ex-Com
missioner of Internal Revenue Walter
Evans to enjaiu the printing of the new
constitution. Evans claims that the re
vision of the constitution by the con
vention of the vote by the people was
improper, and rendered the new instru
ment void. Judge Monfort holds that
Evans and Miller, tbe plaintiffs, cannot
properly sue whero the whole people nre
interested, and says the only way the
revised constitution can lie set aside is
by another convention elected by the
people. Tile case will go to the Court
of Appeals, when tho revised constitu
tion will almost certainly he snstaiiied.

Such complexions ns so many of our
oung ladies possess—dull, pimply, and
overed with sores and blackheads, is
jjnough to cool the ardor of tho warmest
over. To such young ladies we would
say, that you can never have a soft, fair,
smooth, attractive, klssable complexion,
unless your blood is healthy and pure,
for the condition of the blood decides
the complexion. Dr. Pierce’s Golden
Medical' Discovery will purify your
blood, tone up your system, and drive
away those distressing headaches and
backache, from which you suffer period-
ally, and give you a complexion a lilyor
rose-leaf might envy.

through the pores ot tbe skin. It has been
