tn U m*- THE AMER10US DAILY TIMES-RECORDER: THURSDAY, NOVEMBER S, 1891, HAD ANOTHER'S WIFE. The Ofllcer Goes After Him, Hat He Makes HU Escape. Four Wayne, Ind., Nov. 4.—Early in October George Perby arrived in thia city with a very handsome lady snp- jwsed to be his wife. They at once went to house-keeping in a smalLdwell- j„<r on Orchard street. They sod^fonn- ed acquaintances and were making ex cellent impressions on their neighbors, Recently Chief-of-Police Wilkinson re ceived a letter from the chief at Port Byron. N. Y., stating that Derby, who toe Btation baggage-master there for West Shore railway, bad eloped with the wife of Dr. C. A. Borden, of that city, and that she was the mother of three children, and that the man Derby had left a wife and seven children. Derby hail secured employment here with the Peters box factory, but when the chief culled at the house he divined his errand and escaped, and Mrs. Bor den received a telegram that he is at home endeavoring to get the forgive ness of his wife and live with her. Mrs. Borden announces her intention to re main here and do the best she can for herself, and that she has no desire to turn to her husband and three children. A Fugitive's Crimea. Paducah, Ky., Nov. 4.—Thomas Wilkins, who wits a cross-roads mer chant and tanner in Graves county, is a fugitive from justice. He stands in dicted for arson in burning the home of a brother-in-law. Geo. Sullivan, and is strongly suspected of burning two barns, filled with tobacco, and a church. Wilkins, whose guilt is pretty conclusive, was arrested, but escaped, departing bareheaded and barefooted. He was followed, but crossed into Illi nois und was lost. Wilkins is 40 years obi nnd has a wife and five children, lie has a terrible temper, und anger led him to commit the deeds churged against him. Fifteen years since he shut and killed liis mother, it was then thought accidentally, bnt it is now said the deed was done purposely, as Wil kins was sole heir to his mother’s prop erty. A mob was gathering to lynch Wilkin- when lie escaped. Stabbed III. Wife with a Fork. New York. Nov. 4.—Francis Kier- nan, 52 years old, had an altercation with his wife at their home at Green Point and stabbed her with a fork. She was taken to the city hospital, where it is said she will die of lockjaw. Kiernan came home intoxicated and because his wife wonld not get np and cook him something to eat he beat her. Their son, John Kiernun, a young man 31 years old, was in bed at the time and, bearing bis father fighting with his mother, got up and interfered. The father sprung upon him and jabbed him in the arm with a fork. When Mrs. Kiernan went to the assistance of her son Kiernan stablied her a half dozen times in the neck with the fork, making a fearful wound. Kiernan was arrested and is held to await the result of bis wife's injuries. She cannot live. ricailN Guilty to 8»v« Uae Conte Clarksburg, W. Va., Nov. 4.—The case of Wesley Jenkins, who was in dicted in Monongalia county for grand larceny, presented some enrions fea tures. Jenkins was charged with steal ing a yoke of oxen from James Giles, and plead gniity " to save the cost of a trial. ” He told the court that he first stole the cuttle from Giles and sold them to farmer named Horner. After spending the money he . was overcome with remorse, stole then! back from Horner and returned them tp Gila's I farm Hetbeiigave himself tip. Itlsl said had Jenkins hail 1 —■* f-night the case cleared nnder the indictment on the plea that he only borrowed tbe oxen from Giles, and oould fiot have stolen them from Horner, as they were'not bis property. It lew Up Ike Cemetery. Wheeling, Nov. 4.—News has jnst reached here from Coraopolis, Pa., between Wheeling and Pittabnrg, of a Strange and terrible affair which oc curred near that plnce. The report states that the Allegheny Cemetery company a few months ago started to hire a gas well on some portion of their newly acquired property. There was a terrific explosion at tho well, which caused a fearful uphenvel of the earth m the viciuity. Hundreds of dead lollies in the cemetery were hurled from their resting places and many costly monuments were shstterel. file re tort states that the matter has been hushed up and care taken to prevent the newspapers from getting hold of it. he report comes from a reliable gentle man formerly of Wheeling. Mtoli* from Starving Peasant*. St. Petersburg, Nov. 4.—The mar shal of nobility in tbe province of Tam- huff, 1 oing entrusted with the fnnd for the relief of the starving peasants, re ported that vessels containing 100,000 rubles’ worth of grain, bought with the money entrusted to him, had been "recked. It was believed the grain "as not injured, and that the marshal Pocketed the value of it. As nothing more was heard of the wrecked vessels suspicion arose, and the marshal was accused of the frand. He disgorged i-l,OW) rubles und was allowed to escape “•gal puuishinent. Coming to New York. London, Nov. 4.—Rev. Dr. McGold, < atholic bishop of Dnlntb, Minn., is a passenger on the steamship Alaska, "hich has tailed from Queenstown for oew York. Some ladies of Cork have jent to America by tbe steamship Urn- uriaa wieath made laurel, of ivy, sham- r °cks and violet* from Mr. Parnell’* •have. The wra ,th , Mr. Parnell’* mother. HYPNOTIZED BY BALMACEDA. W. S. Eyre Says Something About Egan end Chilian Fueling. New York, Not. 4.—The World cor respondent at Valparaiso secured an In terview with Mr. W. S. Eyre, head of the houae of Grace & Co., in that city, and a nephew of William R. Grace. Mr. Eyre was asked if he felt any un easiness about the safety of the inter ests of his firm in Santiago and Valpa raiso, because they represented Ameri can interests. He replied: "Not the slightest. On the contrary, I believe that the feeling of the people in this country towards the United States cuuiiot possibly be better, while they are very much incensed against Minister Egan, who they believe for reasons of his own, favored in a very improper maimer the cause of tbe late President Balmaceda. ” " What is yonr opinion of Mr. Egan’s course in this whole matter?” • "I feel that Mr. Egan was to a certain extent hypnotized by Balinaceda, and that he felt satisfied that success await ed the arms of the dictator. I think be believed that great privileges could be secured in nitrate lands and in banking circles for Americans if Balmaceda finally triumphed over the Congression- alist party. While it is proper to make due allowance for bis deception and want of judgment, seeing that he is a man who has had no large South Amer ican experience nnd knows the language but imperfectly, yet my idea Is that liis mistakes come more from want of abil ity as a representative of the United States than from a desire to doanything that was wrong in the premises. “ He Married HU Sluter. New York, Nov. 4.—John Muller, the young German emigrant who adopt ed the nunsnnl expedient of marrying liis own sister in order to obtain her re lease from the Barge office, is detained in that establishment, ns is also tbe mother and girl. Marguerite, whose re lationship to tbe man has become some what involved. It is now qnite clear that the party suspected before arrival that either a husband or bondsman would be needed by tbe girl in order to obtain permission to land, and that the plan of brother and sister going throngh tbe form of marriage wonld be the easi est way out of the difficulty. It led, in stead, to a far more serious one, and when the matter is brought before the United States district attorney, the pair may have cause to regret the step, al though it seems to have been nothing more than a ruse to obtain release. No action will be taken till the return of Colonel Weber, the superintendent of immigration, who is expected some time this week. Wilt Hang In Nonmbtr. Sandersville, Ga., Nov. 4.—Tlie last hanging iu Washington county in con formity with the law, occurred sixty years ago when James Howard was pnbliciv hanged for the killing of Will iam Wicker, at Worthen’s store, ten miles north of Sandersville. Jndge Holt passed the sentence of death and Sheriff David Wimberly executed it. A similar scene will be enacted here Nov, 8, when Tom Webb, colored, will pay the deutb penalty. He was convicted of rape at tbe last September term of the superior court, and the sentence of death was passed upon him by Jndge Gamble. The hanging will be private in an enclosure behind the jail. The Washington rifles have offered their services at guard and the sheriff has accepted. Webb is now confined in the Bibb.connty jail. Work of Some Villain, Alton, Ills., Nov. 4,—Detective he would C °have Cn I <*"». ° f “>• chio **°’ »«U< 1 road company, made a discovery which proves conclusively that tbe wreck of the Chicago express at Wann on Satur- uay night was the work of some villain.
