ously and dangerously burned. It is
the same old story of small children be

while playing in the fire, his clothing
caught fire.
It is reported that the Bossian minis
try of finance has made overtures to the
Bank of France for the purchase of sil
ver bullion to the amount of 100,000,009
roubles. This is wanted by the Russian
finance ministry for coinage into rou
bles for state redemption of Polish
treasury obligations.
The kaiser’s latest hobby is said to be
capital punishment. He bus ordered

witli a digest of facts and statistics on
the subject, both relating to Germany
and other countries. Whether the kai
ser means to recommend abolition or a
reform in the method of infliction if not
known.
John L. Taliors, a citizen of Murray,
K.v., has filed snit in the Calloway cir
cuit cnnrt praying damages against the
Paducah, Tennessee and Alabama Rail
road company in the sum of (10,000 for
injuries received by being thrown from
one of the defendant's can at a station
m that county during the month of Hep-
temlier last.
A San Francisco dispatch says: W.
i. Strong & Co,, one of the heaviest
fruit shipping houses on the Pacific
coast, with branches at Fresno, Lot An
geles. Riverside and various eastern
cities, made an assignment for the ben
efit of its crediton. The business has
outgrown the company’s capital, and
hence the suspension.
Secretary Proctor has arrived at Bur
lington. vt., from Washington. Be
fore leaving the national capital he
wrote his resignation at secretary of
war and placed it in the bands of the
president. No time was stated for the
resignation to take effect, but the ex
pectation is that the president will for
mally accept it shortly.

Richmond, Nov. 6.—The committee
representing the Ladies' Hollywood
Memorial association called on Mrs.
Jefferson Davis, with the view of ex
pressing a desire that the association be
allowed the custody of the remains of
Mr. Davis. Various places of sepulture
were talked of, including the grounds
of the. white honse of the Confederacy.
Mrs. Davis said her husband bad often
expressed his aversion to any public,
noisy thoroughfare as a place of burial,
and had desired a quiet and secluded
place for himself, where bis whole fain -
ily might rest near him. She said she
had finally decided on Hollywood ceme
tery, but bad not as yet selected the
exact spot. She assured the ladies that
as soon as her selection wns made and
the interment had taken place she would
then turn over the whole section to the
Hollywood Memorial association. Mrs.
Davis has a son (Joseph) bnried in Hol
lywood. It is also the place of inter
ment of some 18,000 Confederate sol
diers.
Mrs. Davis expressed her earnest de
sire to make Richmond her future home
aud said it was no longer n question ot
anything bat means. If she can make
satisfactory financial arrangements she
will soon be back to spend the rest of
her days. The site of the monument to
Mr. Davis will be left in tbe hands of
the Davis Monument association.

Ottowa, Nov. 0.—The cabinet differ
ences have been arranged, and tlie po
litical crisis is over temporarily. Sec
retary of State Chapleaa called on the
premier and had an interview with him,
the miuiste: s present being Sir John
Thompson nnd Sir Geo. E. Foster. The
result was that- Secretary Chapleau
agreed to continue in his place for a time
and to succeed Hon. Edward Dewdney
as minister of the interior, when the
latter retires, to lieutenant governor of
British Colombia. J. A. Quintet, ex
speaker of the honse of commons, win
succeed Mr. Chapleau as secretary of
state, and the present lieutenant gov
ernor of Quebec will come into the cab
inet as minister of agriculture, replac
ing Senator John Carling.
Daihad to Her Death.
Owensboro, Kv. t Nov. 0.— A fatal
run-away accident occurred at Bewley-
ville. Miss Cora Bandy, daughter of
Thos. Bandy, a merchant of that place,
was driving a young horse, when the
animal ran away with her. Both her
arms and one leg were broken, nnd she
sustained internal injuries, from which
she died in a few lionrs. Miss Bandy
was beautiful aud highly educated, and
was to have been married this mouth to
a young merchant of a neighboring
town.
Charged With Stealing Wheat.
Portland, Ind., Nov. 6. — Muck
Wright, residing near Dunkirk, was ar
rested and brought here charged with
stealing twenty-five bushels of wheat.
At the preliminary examination the
irisoner was bound over to court, with
_iia bond fixed at (400. This makes the
third arrest for wheat stealing within a
few weeks. The offenders in the other
cases were both found gnilty and sen
tenced to the penitentiary. ,
Pound Her Charred Remains.
Jerskyville, Ills., Nov. 8 —The resi
dence of Mike Faber of this county,
near Grafton, was burned, and the
charred remains of Faber’s wife were
found in tlie ruins. He has been ar
rested on suspicion of having murdered
her and burned the honse to conceal the
crime. The night before the fire Faber
and his wife qnarreled. and he drove
her out of tbe house, and she spent the
night with neighbors.
A Minister Killed.
Decatur, Ind., Nov. 6.—Rev. W.
Walters of this place, was run down
and killed by an engine on the Toledo,
St. Louis nnd Kansas City railroad
while attempting to cross the track.
He was n member of the Baptist
chnrch. He leaves a wife and four
children.

borers working for the Villard syndi
cate on electric railway lines in this
city, have strnck against a redaction of
05 cents in their wages, and work on
the railwav improvements is at a staiid-
