As good as nets
—that’s the condition of liver, stom
ach and bowels, when Dr. Pierce’s
Pleasant Pellets have done their
work. It’s a work that isn’t fin
ished when you’ve stopped taking
them, cither. It’s lasting. They
cure, as well as relieve. And it’s
' all done so mildly and gently 1
There’s none of the violence that
went with tho old-time pill. One
tiny, 6ugar-coatcd Pellet’s a gentle
laxative — threo to four act as a
•cathartic. Sick Headache, Bilious
Headache, Constipation, Indiges
tion, Bilious Attacks, and all de
rangements of tho stomach and
bowels, are prevented, relieved and
pared. As a Liver Pill, they’re un-
equaled. They’re purely vegetable,
perfectly harmless — tho smallest,
cheapest, and easiest to take.
They’re the cheapest pill you can
buy, because they’re guaranteed to
give satisfaction, or your money is
returned.
You only pay for the good you
get. Can you ask more?
That’s tiiu veculiar plan all Dr.
Pierce’s medicines are “old on.

This is the way
with the Ball corset: II you
want ease and shapeliness,
you buy it—but you don’t
keep it unless you like it.
After two or three weeks’
wear, you can return it and
have your money.
Comfort isn’t all of it
though. Soft Eyelets, and
"bones” that can’t break or
kink—Ball’s corsets have
both of these.

I nave Herniated about giving to print
the following true story ot a deathbed
neene winch occurred in this city 1 bad
tlic description directly from the doctot
in attendance He has lately left New
York to continue his profession else
where. and I am constrained to tell the
story as lie described it. suppressing all
names
The snow and sleet dashed through
the death chilling atmosphere in wild
waves The wind moaned a dirge
among the telegraph wires A solitary
hackman. driven from Ins Seat by the
warring elements, had ensconced him
sell inside his mournful looking vehicle
and tapped u|)on the frost covered glass
to attract the attention of belated night
owls Winter in Its cruelest phase was
upon ns. In a dingy looking bouse on
Thirtieth street a young man weak and
emaciated tossed restlessly upon a bed.
He was a race track tout, and the great
mental strain he had lieen subjected to
for years in naming sure winners had
left him an absolute wreck His sunken
cheeks, his eyes ablaze with fever and
his corpselike pallor all deuoted that he
had but a few short hours to live. A
professional nurse, with that cold, bos-
pital stretcher expression they all pos-
sat in a corner of the darkened
room and whiled away the time by
figuring how tlie undertaker wonld mam
to get tile coffin around tiiat narrow
turn in the stairs
The doctor had been summoned, and
when he rang the bell the tout waved
Ins bony arms aloft and shrieked
•They're off I Tenny in a walkl Tenny
gets all the money, and Salvator won’t
lie one. two. six!"
TIIK TOUT'S CINCH.
He fell back on the bed exhausted os
the doctor entered the room The phy
sician removed his greatcoat and the
nurse shook the rain anil snow from it
“Doctor, this is a dreadful night. I
suppose yon are wet through?'
The tout regained consciousness and
muttered: "The truck will tie heavy to
morrow. and I've got a copper riveted,
lead pijie. copyrighted, air tight cinch.
Firenze in the umd—she swims in it—
She can make the pace so hot that the
truck will be dry before she does the
find quarter.’
Tlie doctor approached the bed, and
touching tlie patient's pulse said. “How
do you feel?”
"Well. IT! tell you." lie replied, "just
bow I feel about this. The Dwyers sta
ble is next to ours, and they tell me
everything. Phil told me this morning
that Blackjack would win in a horrible
canter You see. the party that owns
him wants to make a hogkilling, and
no one knows that he's out for the dust."
Turning to the uurse the doctor in
quired, “Have yon notified his friendsof
his condition?" The tout started up and
yelled: “Of course I havel I want to
let 'em all in ou the ground floor. Why,
it's a little sure money. I saw him tried
at daylight this morning. He made the
first quarter in 0:31 f. the second in 0:07.
ami the third was so fast that It broke
my stop watch nnd loosened three of
my teeth ’ How cun be lose it? Why,
it's jnst like fulling through the roof of
a mint."
The doctor looked very serious nnd
said. “He will be dead in an hour."
LOST BY S BISKATH.
"Oh, no, be won't," the tout sneered.
'There's not a dead one in the bunt. If
any of 'em were stiff I’d know it. 1 tell
you, Cluckjuck is full of Tabasco sauce,
and he'll leave all them other plugs at
the post Why shouldn't he? Do you
know bis pedigree? Blackjack is out of
Dark Lantern, by Blackwell's Island,
and he's a bora cracker."
The doctor felt his pulse again and
sighed, “I can do no more; I must bo
going." The tout caught his arm and.
drawing bis head dowu closo to the pil
low. whispered: “After the Bluckjock
race meet me in the paddock. If you
win I’ve got to give fifty dollars to the
trainer, twenty-five to the jockey and
twenty to the stable boys. PU put wbat’s
left on the next race, and if the horse
wins, you're in on it So meet me iu the
paddock and I'll cash your ticket."
The doctor took the dying mu..‘s baud
and said, “Uy poor boy, are you pre
pared to meet the Great Judge?" The
tout gasped. “I don't want to meet the
judge; tiie man Pip after is the starter.”
The physician pressed his attenuated
band, and, as the moisture gathered in
bis sympathetic eyes, said, “Now turn
your face to the wall, my boy. and go to
if cep." “I will," tho tout muttered.
“I’ll get next to the rail, so that when 1
turn the corner they can't foul me.
Here's a telegram I just received from
the owner. There’s 60 to I on Blackjack;
get it qnick before they cut it down.
I'll win"—
