covered that J. Wilkes Booth's theat

1865, after lutving been shipped on the
schooner Marie Victoria, which was

Major D. G. Purse addressed the

While Jack Glasscock, the short stop
of last season's New York base hall
team, was excavating for the founda
tion of a new residence at North Front
and Maryland streets, at Wheeling, he
unearthed an old oyster can containing
$8,0(>0iu gold and silver coin and moldy
greenbacks.
At Hempstead, Tex., J. Haverman, a
very old tuan who runs a lunch counter,
was shot in the baok and instantly
killed by a man named Henderson.
Henderson took a sandwich, which he
refused to piny for, and because Haver
man remonstrated, he allot him. A
mob collected to lynch the murderer,
anil only prompt action of the sheriff
saved him.
A fact not generally known to the
public has gained added interest through
the death in France of Mme. Bartholdi,
mother of the well-known acnlptor and
designer, who died a few days ago at the
advanced age of 80 years. She it was
who stood as the model for Bartholdi’s
statne of "Liberty Enlightening the
World;" which now occupies sneb a
prominent position in the harbor of
New York.
The alarm excited by the uuuounco-
ment of the serious illness of Prince
George, the second son of the Prince of
Wales, who is suffering from an attack
it enteric fever, was allayed by the an
nouncement made by the physicians in
attendance upon him. A bulletin is
sued from the Marlborough house, the
London reeMeuce of the Prinoe of
Wales, stated that Prince George had
passed a good night and that he was
making satisfactory progress towards
recovery.
An English locomotive has completed
its millionth mile and is still in good
condition.

A Remarkable Charge.
Dallam, Tex, Nov. 1?.—A sensa
tional arrest baa been made here, tbe
charge being murder. While B. L.
Btch and a yonng lady of Vernon named
Lon Porter were ont driving in Vernon
•boat two months ago, the hones took
fright and ran away. The yonng lady,
who was driving, was unable to check
tbe horse and Mr. Rich says be jumped
ont with the intention of catching the
reins and stopping tbe bones. He failed
to get hold of the reins and tbs bones
sped on. Th# yonng lady, finding that
she was unable to stop tbe bones,
jumped ont, sustaining injuries from
which she died. Rich came to Dallas,
and tbe father of tbe dead girl made an
affidavit against Rich, charging him
with murder of bis daughter, causing
bis arrest. r

Ur. William T. Price, a Justice of the
Peace, at Richland, Nebraska, was con
fined to hie bed last winter with a
