The Athena Banner claims to be the
only paper in the South that la open In
Ita denunciation of the plan to open the
World's Fair on Sunday.
Louisville Is the only city that la not
alarmed by a water famine. Kenttick-
Ians can more easily do without water
than any people In the world.
Hill couldn’t carry a State in the Un
ion. Sounds hard on Hill, but name the
State.—Athena Banner;
The State of Atlanta. How'll tlili

It te not alwayi the beat educator that
atanda the beat examination. Questions
whose answers depend upon memory are
no teat of qualification, and too many
euch questions are asked in examina
tions.
A West Point man baa just rcceired

If tub public schools would give in
struction in type-setting, in the use of
type-setting machines, in short-hand and
the uae of type writing machines, they
would turn out more young men and wo
men capable of earning their livings
than they do now.—Timea-Unlon.
Tux Culumbus Evening Ledger, the
bright afternoon paper of our sister city,
celebrated Its fifth birthday on Wednes
day, November 18. The Timer-Kkcou-
deb extends to Hr. E. T. Byington and
the accomplished Mrs. Byington con
gratulation*. Their bright paper is a
living success.
From ill over the Union, from New
York city down to the village, come
complaints of the shortness of the water
supply. There is certainly as much wa
ter in the world as ever, and the popula
tion has not so wonderfullyloereaaed ail
of a andden. Does this mean that the
people are drinking more water and
washing themselves more frequently?
Tue condition of Blaine's health is
again being discussed in the public press,
and statements are being made to the
effect that he will retire from the call'
net and go to the West Indies early in
January. The alckneas of Blaine hat
become an awful chestnut, and the new*,
paper correspondents at Washington
would favor the country If they wore to
lay It aside and take up matters of more
Interest.
Br abandoning the neighborhood of
Park Row, Ann street and Broadway,
the New York Herald gets out of tbo
newspaper swim, but at the same time
it follows she business trend of New
York—goes np town. Hr. Bennett's new
building will be on the corner of Broad
way and Thirty-fifth street. The old
Herald building was in its day the finest
newspaper office In the world, being of
marble and coating a million dollars.
Sam Jones and Yellowstone Kit will
soon engage In a Joint debate on the is
sues of the prohibition campaign In At
lanta. It Is oerteln that both will take
active parte on oppoaita sides la the
campaign. A contest of wit between
these two famous and ecoentrlo charac-
. tars would be a drawing, card In the
"show” that Atlanta will have on tbs
oomlng municipal campaign. It would
beat Sandy Coban's ballet all boltow.
The scheme of erecting a state or
phans' home In Brunswiek, originated
by the Liquor Dealers’ Association in
this city, deserves the encouragement
especially of the citizens of Brunswick
and the people generally all over the
state. It la the first time that any or
ganisation of saloon keepers ever took
the lead in such a work, but it is none
the leas a noble undertaking, and should
enlist tbe sympathy and aid of every
one.—Brunswick Times.
Senator Puou of Alabama publishes
■ a Uttar In which be oppoeee tbe renoml-
nation of Cleveland in 1803 for the Presi
dency en the Democratic ticket. He
asserts that tbe single IggOo-of the tariff
upon which Cleveland fought hie cam
paign against •Harrison U no stronger
now than it was thin. The tariff, be as
serts to not paramount to all other toeuee
and be declares that Campbell lost tbe
fight in Ohio by running away from tbe
eilver question, Tbe In# silver Issue,
be contends, to as Important as tbe tariff
issue, and be says that the new Cleveland
cry has been raised by those who wish
to dispose of silver. Hr. Pngb says Har
rison has been strengthened with his
BARBARISM IN TBE 19TH CENTUKT.
A human soul launched into eternity!
and through tbe moat brutal methods!
Strangulation! tbe poor victim, dwelling
for days, perhaps weeks, upon bis im
pending fete, languishes in a prison cell
until his time Is called.
In this age of progression and im
provement It seems as if this relict of
barbarism might well be omitted from
our category. However sinful may be
tbe viotim, and though tbe old Hoialc
law of “an aye for an eye" should bold
good when a fellow man’s blood is wan
tonly abed, there should be some more
decent method of execution adopted.
Even let a squad of riflemen stand before
tbe condemned, and at the word of com
mand empty their muskets into the vic
tim. His death is easy and quick. But
now all is uncertainty, the poor criminal
may struggle in mortal agony until the
rope breaks, and then be dragged back,
to undergo another death.
A negro will to-day be sent to hie
Maker st Hount Vernon. Hit crime de
serves death, and it should be meted out
to him; yet if we are to lend a mao out
of the world, at least let it all be done
with delicacy and good breeding.
MANUFACTURING ENTERPRISES.
Ever sinoe The TiMES-IiEcofiiir.it baa
been in existence it has advocated, and
it no unmeasured terms, the establish'
ment of more manufactnring Interests in
Americus, and .'or tbe present article
there are no apologies to be made, as the
matter has become one of the utmoet
importance to the people and to the
town, ^inventory of the thriving cit-
iesof the tfnintry (will prove that, with
few exceptions, the manufacturing in
teracts haft proven tbe stopping stone
to prosperity, and, likewise, that those
towns which enjoyed no soch advantages
have remained at a complete stands till.
The agricultural section with which
Americus is surrounded is one of pecu
liar excellence, and to this fact is owing
much of our city's aucceaa; but no city
ever enjoyed permanent prosperity that
depended solely upon buying and selling
agricultural products.

Titr. Indications arc, from the pro
ceedings of the convention of tbe Na
tional Farmers’ Alliance, now in session,
at Indianapolis, that tbe scheme to
force tbe Alliance into tbe Third party
movement will fail, as ail the prominent
leaders of the orgacization are opposed
to it and are fighting it vigorously. Aside
from his charge that the Alliance would
control tbe transportation lines of the
country, the speech of J. F. Tillman, the
eecretaty of the executive committee of
the Alliance, was by far the beat deliv
ered, si he denounced the recklessness
of tbe llced Billion Dollar Congress, and
declared that the tariff taxation now
bearing so heavily on tbe farmers of the
country would have to be reduced, no
matter what the protectionists and the
monopolists might say to the contrary.
The South produces a great amount of
cotton annually, and the farmers an, as
a clan mortgaged beyond redemption
but one thing can be truly said, and that
is that as brave and uncomplaining bear-
era of trouble and adversity tbe civilised
world has never seen their equal. In
debt, and with little hope of extricating
themselves, they constitute the best
strata of modern progressiveness and
morality; wbat communities so quick to
resent depravity and sinfulness as our
rural settlements? and although they
sometimes adopt premature methods for
ita suppression, there Is, proportionate
ly, vastly leas of vice outside of tbo cit
ies than in them, where the machinery
of taw and order Is .carried to its high
est perfection.
When Editor Howell gets to be gov.
ernor,* will not we edltora have a fat
time filling all the offices at bis disposal?
The millenlum will never eome until a
truly good editor gels hold of the reins
of government and puts all the balance
of tbe good editota in offioe; and there
Is no better time to start this movement
than right now, and bare in Georgia.
Tue Timer-Recorder wiU support Edi
itor Howell, provided tbs editor of Tub
TiMKS-REc-ORDKn Is made Chief Justice
of|tho Supreme Court, or some other
soft snap, with big salary and no work.
Now, If Editor Howell really wants to
be governor, and is not merely coquet
ting. tat him speak out, or forever here
after bold hit peace.
In Europe three million armed men
are sullenly facing each other, waiting
only for the word to spring at each
other's throats. War baa long been
thought of as imminent, and this state
of things has come to be regarded as
normal. This anomalous condition,with
out a parallel lu history, Is vividly por
trayed in the November Forum by Wm.
R. Thayer, one {of our most acute stu
dents of European politics. He
striven to put before his readers a pict
ure of tbe status of each of the great
powers—their strength, their feelings
toward one another, and tbeir probable
course in case of war. He concludes
taut Russia is today tbe center of the
warlike storm area, and that her oourss
endangers all Western Europe.
Evideetlt Governor Northen takes
no stock In the talk of mismanagement
of tbe State Lunatic Asylum either by
the Trustees of tbe Superintendent and
bis corps, as be has reappointed every
party since his election, while Cleveland member of the preaont board of Trustees.
baa made no progress in that direction,
lie adds that if the Democrats with to In
vito defeat they will nominate Cleve
land.
This la swell deserved endorsement of a
very capable and efficient management.
Tbe Governor made no mistake when be
took this action, In tbe opinion of Tub
Times-Kecobdeb.

Editor Ganntt tacks a great deal of be

quality of “editorial grape-shot" that

Corn in Kansas has for many win
ters been used as fuel, and simply
for the reason that corn was cheaper
than coal or wood, finch excess ia cal
culated to bring ruio upon any section.
Had Kansas been able to raise a greater
variety of crop product, and held off on
the core which seems to constitute her
sole resource, there would bare been
little of the poverty and destitution
which has during the past appealed to
the country for aid an J assistance.
Pitot-Kssoit Harris Chappell, Pres
ident of the Girl's Industrial Institute,
MilledgcviUe, reports it In a prosperous
and first-class condition, fiaid he: “There
are 172 girls in attendance, representing
aeventy-two counties There are thirty-
five young Indies there attending the
normal school who have bad some expe
rience in teaching school, and from their
earnings they are paying tlicir board.
The institution is progressing far beyond
my expectations.”
The beneficial effeot of the defeat of
tbe Berner bill Is seen in tbe fact that
as soon as the Legislature adjourned,
the Central railroad, In which Georgia
people hold several million dollars In
vested, at once secured a loan to retire
Its floating debt If the Berner bill bad
become a taw, this loan could not have
been made, and tbe Central ralpht have
thus been forced into a receiver's hands;
and this Is just what the wreckers
wanted.
