The 8km railroad was Montgomery yesterdayj completed to Sesllpox has been been found to be «pldenic In Liberty county In this State among tbe negroes. Mow Is a good time to get yourself vaccinated. I* tbe last thirty-five years tbe Repub lican and the Democratic parties hare .each held nine national conventions. Chicago has been tbe scene of six of these—one-third of tbe whole number, Goeebhob Nobthen baa officially ap pointed Thursday, November 20, as Thanksgiving day. L t all those who have nothing specially good to be thank, ful for, return thanks that things are no Tbe Atlanta Constitution, which has heretofore been booming Hill for tbe Presidency, seems now to be getting ready to take up Cleveland, who will no donbt be presented by the Mew Toi Delegation to tbe.natlonal convention. A THisxnro farmer, a strong aliiance- man and friend of tbe subtreasury idea •sid'to tbe editor of Tbe Liberal-Enter prise a few days ago, “Hoe can we ever hope to keep any money in this country as long as we send away frdm borne to bny everything we use?” The trial of Mr. Louia 11. Patillo for the killing of Ur. Charles P. Hudson was ocnoluded In Richmond Superior Court at 8 o'clock Wednesday night, wlieu the jury returned a verdict of not guilty. This verdiot seems to have been general ly expected by tbe public. At last the agony Is over, and Geor gia has an Episcopal Bishop Dr. Nel son has definitely accepted the tender, subjeot to tbs usual formality of satis faction prevailing in bis churoh. Geor gia Is to be congratulated upon tho acqui sition of such a gentleman as Dr. Nelson to the Blshoprio. He seems to possess all toe qualifications needed for this high office; and being as yet only SO years old, has thirty or forty years of - active ser vice ahead of him. Tub Athens Ledger nominates Cspt. Evan P. Howall of Atlanta for Governor. Wo have known Capt. Howell for year*, and he Is a good .and true man, and never went back on a promise or friend. He Is honest and sincere in bis views, and If we go outelde of the alliance ranks for aohlef magistrate, we had rather soe Capt. Howell sleeted Gov ernor than any other man in Georgia. Ifhe promised tbe alllanoe to standby them he will do It.—Southern Alliance Farmer. Tbe Ocala convention set apart 1891 as a year for education, and alUanoemen weie admonished igilnit tuxy prominent part In politics until after the February convention. Tbe people's party nominated tickets and acted on Its own responsibility; and tbe defeat with which It met shows the folly of one branch of the alliance running off In ad vance of the main body. This will be the remit In Georgia If the third party advocates are too previous.—Southern Alliance Fanner. Tbe last spike In the Montgomery end of the Savannah, Americas A Montgom ery railroad extension was drives yes terday, and In a few day’s more regular trains will run Into Montgomery. This means more for Americas than any other one event of her hlatory, and marks the successful completion of an enterprise fraught with the greatest possibilities to this oity and seetlon; and under disad vantageous conditions that few others could have overcome so well. Let everybody be happy over the ansplolons event. As might havs been expected, Tom Watson has gone over bag and baggage to the Third Party, If the reports from the Indianapolis convention are reliable. The Colnmbns Enquirer voices the sen timent of every deoent man in tbe State when it saya: “Mr. Watson was elected to Congress just as Col. Livingston was. He made tbe race ss a Democrat. He was nominated and elected by the Demo cratic party. His desertion to the Third party Is not only Ingratitude of the worst sort, but It Is political treachery for which there In no defence." Of all the bright ideas yet advanced by which the farmers are to get on top, the Constitution comes to tho front with one of the brightest. The only element of impracticability about It la that It takes tbe co-operation of several million men to make It successful, and therein is its fatal defect. The scheme Is for tbe farmers to buy five to ten million balm for future delivery, and then not plant a seed. The parties who sold the futures to tbe farmers couldn’t get any i to deliver on their contracts and ey could thus be made to settle on the era own terms. A WARLIKE EDITOR. Editor Gantt seems to hare been made specially vicious by bis recent Illness, at least be Is ss belligerent ash hyena with the tootbaohe, and Is not only mak ing It exceedingly Interesting for political adversaries, but Is firing into those clerical gentlemen whom he desig nates “sensational preachers,” Jones, Small, Wadsworth and Lee, with characteristic charges of grape and can ister. Among other things, he says of two Utter: There never was a more .hsraslul outrage perpetrated from tbe pulpit tbsa Mr. Wads- wortb'a at taolu upon tbe Episcopal sod Bap- U<t ehurchss; and bis bitter dsnouncletlon of tbs eltlsena or Augusta will certainly pises a (tumbling block In tbe war of sux-t-smir in til# pulpit be now occupies. Mr. Wadsworth la to tbs ehuioh what John Sullivan la to the sportlog fraternity. He a sort or clerical prise dsbter. and leaves braised hearts and bad blood behind btiu wherever he goes. Soms years ago he In salted from Ins pnipit *n Athens, and with out provocation, several of the noblesl Christian ladles in that city. He bad boa divided and left a feeling ordlscord and dlvl- •loo In many good families. It would bava been far hitter to bars left tbe Mstboalst pulpit la Aihsna unfilled for s year than sup plier It with su.-b a surer up of strife as Mr. Wadsworth. “Of to# poll!leal preachers, we have here In AtlsnUsfair.smplolo Bov. J. w. Lee, better known to hlseathuahiatteadinlren “Doetor" Leo. This minister was born and reand In tbs eountry, bat posssealng mors than ordinary elnquenoe. be was transferred toelty churches. With this elevation, “Doe- tor'' Least ones forgot bis bumble friends In tbe country, and gave bimwlf up. heart and .to the aristocratic and wealthy circles ants. He saw that no advancement be oxpoetsd from tbe poor farmers—bis associate*—whl.'e to unite against and thrlr cause woul ■ bs to eaptoro, the applause of tbs risk and powerful. Hi ailed tbe partisan papers with his appeal for the election of Gordon. Not content will thls.be was one of tbe most consplcw speakers at that artesian carmagnole, and made a most vindictive and unwuria .ted as sault upon tbe Alliance. Of,all the emlass ri-aof the plutocrats that the f -rmera have to contend if I'll In Georgia, non. arc mole liltleruiid vindictive than this minister of the gospel, who has iinltteo bla pulpit to light a down trodden and Impoverished peo- people, and continue their enslavumeni to the tlrb. If this be modern Christianity Ood a.ve Ibe country !” GANTT'S GEORGIA GEOGRAPHY. Wbat Is Georgia? Gcoigia Is tlio Empire State of tbo South Wbere is Georgia located? In the city of Atlanta. Where is tbe city of Atlanta located In tbe Journal office. Wbere Is tbe Journal office located Id Mr. Hoke Smith. Wbere li Mr. Hoke Smith located? In tbe eye* of tbe whole people. Huw do you know that Mr. Smith located in tbe eye* of the whole people? I read It every evening in tbe Atlanta Journal, and a* Hoke Smith owns the paper, of course be knows whereof he speaks. COUNT AT THE GIN. Mr. W. F. Gay, a farmer of Meriweth er oounty, advances an idea that Is aim pie and practicable, and should be st once adopted. It Is to ascertain the actual cotton re ceipts at the Initial point, tbe ginnery, and report from that point Instead of the ports. This not only Insures abso lute accuracy, a thing not now obtained by the port system, but gives the figure* many days earlier than by the present system. Every ginnery in the South keeps* record of the number of bales It turns out, and with rery little trouble their reports can be consolidated day by day and furnished tbe cotton exchanges. Those ginneries that are away from towns could tend in by their patrons who are hauling to market the daily reports, and thus practically everything would be covered. A* tbe farmers are Interested In keep log up with this kind of newe, they would take pains to see that this service was prompt It la certainly worth a trial Mr, Gay’ idea la strongly endorsed by tbe Const! tution, to whom hit suggestion Is made. Tub New York Herald of Tuesday make* appalling disclosure* In reference to the evasion of the provisions of this government against pauper Immigration by Inspectors and others, and also in reference to horrible and criminal neg lect by officers of steamships of tbe steerage passengers. /Tub Atlanta Herald is the most en- aiastlo Cleveland paper In the State. J leading editorial of Thursday puts his name to the front as the Herald's choice, and it proceeds forthwith to eleot hi; '°u*l£re*ident of the United States. None of the State weeklies get in any more opportune work on the eeonomto questions than the Cutbbert Liberal-En terprise, from wbleh tbe following Is re produced with the endorsement of The Times Kecobdeb: “Tbe present money stringency in tbe South is not tbe result of any action of the Alliance, nor It it tbe result of any organised effort to break down tbe Alliance. It It the suit of tbe foolish policy of the people of the South In lending all tbe money they can “rake and scrape” and then strain ing their credit to bay wbat should be produced at home; the silly polley of raising more ootton than tbe world wants and raising none, or very little, of tbe things that we want It le |the result of the foolish game of “heads I win, tails yon lose" that we bars been playing. Tbe other fellows win and we lose, no matter wbleh way the penny fells. No possible governmental financial system can give relief tbst will be permanent unless we change our tactic*'” Pbesideet Polk of the National Far mers’ Alliance 'wee re-elected without opposition. It lee matter of regret that Colonel Livingston did not get this place, at be Is a man Of much more abil ity than Polk. The tronbte seems to have been that Livingston was too mneb of a Democrat to satisfy the third party element that baa control of the conven tion. He protested against the resolu tion Instructing Alliance Congressmen to keep out of the oaucusses of the two parties. He advised the convention that l.e had been elected to Congress as a Democrat, and that he proposed to act with bis party regardless of any instruc tions given him by tbe Alliance. Colonel Livingston, as a Democrat, nominated and elected by the Democrats of hi* diatriet, could not, consistently, take any other position, nor can any Democratic Congressman reconcile a different coarse with a deoent sense of political honesty. Ukdbb the new apportionment the Southern States gained several Congress- and her total vote In the electoral college will be 189. It la not likely that that one of theoe will be lost to tbe Dem ocratic candidate*. The votes of Con necticut 0, of Now York 86, Jfow Jersey 10 and Indiana IS, make a total of 07. Their vote* too are reasonably certain for the Democracy and wtU make a grand total of 220. This would elect the ticket and give them eight majority over the Republicans. We have at least votes from Michigan, as the last legis lature passed a law by wbleh the vote of the 8tate will not be wild for either party. In addition there Is a fighting chance for Illinois, Wlseonsln, Iowa, Massachusetts, Rhode bland End New Hampshire. HANDSOME DISPLAY OF New Dress Goods AT- Travclera msy learn a lesson from Mr C. D. Cone, a prominent attorney of Parker, Dakota, who says: "I never leave homo without taking a bottle of Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera and Diar rhoea Remedy with me, and on many oc casions hare run with It to the relief of some sufferer and have never known it to fall.
