THE AMBKI/ jpg DAILY TIMES“KECOjRI)EK: SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1801 DR. F. A. THOMAS ‘GIVES HIS OPINION ON THE CAUSE THAT LEO TO Jimmie Anderson*. Heath—The Child Wli Subject to Epileptic Flta-Tbe Whipple* theIndirect Caute—He Offers to Exhume ■ the Dead Boy and Examine Its Brain. Since speculation on the proable cause of the death of the little negro boy is so rife, a Tijies-Becpbdeb reporter saw Dr. F. A. Thomas and asked his opinion of the cause. In the course of his remarks the Doo- - tor observed: "The child was, from in fancy, subject to epileptic fits, whioh continued at frequent intervals np to about a year ago. Since that time the child had not bad a fit, and was appa rently in better health. I was called in' about a o’clock Tuesday night, too late to render any effective assistance. After the child was laid in the coffin, the mother signified her desire to have his head examined. This I did without discovering any (signs of a blow. Epi lepsy is a nervous affection and the best remedial agents known are perfect mental and physical quietude, suppose that the whipping excitement consequent thereon, caused the epileptic fits which resulted in the child’s death. The fact that I did not dUoover any evidences of a blow on the head does not mean that a blow was not given. Frequently a blow on the Bead is given and the effeot is entirely internal. If the necessity of exhuming the body arises It should be done imme diately, before decomposition sets in and the brain structure become, impaired. In event that the whipping was the indi rect cause of the oblld’s death the girl is innocent, unless she struck it on tin head with some heavy instrument” < The most singnlar phase of the affa is the discrepancy between the story Lizzie Banton and that of the mother the dead child. This hedges the case around with atmosphere of doubt and suspicion, affords an incentive to an examine SPECIALLY PRE- iTY.
