THE AMER1CUS DAILY TIMES-RECORDER: SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 1891,
SPEAKERSHIP.
A STAMPEDE OF CANDIDATES TO
NEW YORK CITY-
It I. B.ller«l th. B«ce Will B. Hotly Con-
tM tad—Tb« Frtend* of Mr. Mill* Main
tain Their Confldaneo-A Protracted Con-
leet and ite Keeult,
Washington, Nov. 21.—There ha*
been a »tainpede of speakership candi
date* to New York City, Messr*. Crisp,
Mill* and Springer being there to look
after their respective interest*. Within
the past few day* an impression has
arisen that New York rotes will settle
She matter, and henoe the anxiety of
all the candidates in this respect.
Whether it is true or not that the dele
gates from New York will vote as a-
unit, this impression exists, and appears
to have a-good foundation. The fact
that the vote of one state is likely to
determine the issue ■ show* how close
and uncertain the fight is at present.
The friends of Mr. Mill* maintain
their confidence, saying that in any
event he will soore enongh of the un
pledged rote to give him the nomina
tion in caucus. He has 'not 'been alto
gether discreet in hi* canvass, and has
said some things that have not re
dounded to his advantage. Hi is re
ported to have said to a friendi "The
meanest thing I know about ths Demo
crats is that they have compelled me to
make a fight for the speakership.
The construction he intended to be
pnt upon this was that he had earned
the distinction upon' the floor of the
house, and that the honor was now be
grudged him by those who had
not taken such a prominent fight in the
tariff issue. It was evidently aimed at
Mr. Crisp, and the latter’s friends reply
that no Democrat has earned any dis
tinction that his associates are bound to
bestow, and that the labors of the lead
ers in the house have been equal so far
as fighting the common enemy is con
cerned.
The.e is no doubt that the chances of
Messrs. Springer, McMillin, Hatch and
Bynum depend largely upon a pro
longed contest between Messrs. Mills
and Crisp. Of the 230 votes that will
be cast in the canons on the first ballot,
in the neighborhood of ISO Will be cast
either for Mr. Mills or Mr. Crisp.
Hence, if a nomination is made on
the second or third ballot, the minor
candidates will have little opportunity
to form combinations. They are there
fore encouraging as much os possible a
protracted contest between the two
leaders. If this bitterness can be fos
tered, and it has already been partially
developed, it is possible that neither of
the two leaders mentioned will secure
the caucus nomination.
Mills* Failure to Secure Pledges.
New York, Nov. 21.—Congressman
Boger Q. Mills has been in Brooklyn
two days trying in vain to get pledges
of support for the speakership froin the
King’s county delegation. Two mem-
bets of the delegation declined to see
the Texas candidate. Mr. Mills was
very anxious see Boss McLaughlin, of
Brooklyn, but the boss is shooting
ducks down on the Jersey coast, and re
fused to come home. A reception ten
dered him was a failure (politically, as
most of the politicians invited failed to
attend. He obtained no pledges of sup
port.
Cleveland on the Speakership.
New York, Nov. 21.—Qrover Cleve
land authorises the statement that he is
taking no part in the contest for the
speakership of the house. That he is as
much the friend of each candidate as he
' is of any other; that he never declared
himself As favoring Mr. Mills more than
Mr. Crisp or Mr. Springer, or Mr. Mc
Millan, and has not made, and does not
intend making any suggestions in re
spect to the organisation of the house of
representatives.
, Hie Condition Unchanged*
Buenos Ayres, Nov. 21.—The condi
tion of President Polligrini, who has
been ill, shows no improvement. Two
deaths from " *
here.
