forests of Putnam Has Been Reduced.
Putnam, Ga., November 25.—Farm
er* are about through gathering and aome
are sowing grain.
The year’s operations wiU provo any
thing but satisfactory to a majority of
the fanners throughout this part of Ma
rion and Schley counties. From a care
ful estimate of the crops of some of the
best farmers we know, we find, taking
them ae an average, that the cotton crop
has fallen short of last year two-fifths;
while it has been sold at least one-fiftlf
lower than last year’s crop. Up to
twelve months sgo it was generally con
ceded that the farmers were in a better
financial standing than they had been
for years; but now everything indicates
that this era of prosperity has obanged.
We believe that there ha* generally
been made throughout the seeUon sup
plies enough to rnn the farmers another
year, bnt these are unevenly distributed,
some being bountifully supplied while
others have none. This latter class, too
generally, are heavily pressed with debt.
Every day without hardly an excep
tion, something is sold for debt, at one
or the other anrroundlng precincts.
These sales though, are being kept up
by the tenant and renter, bnt they have
oontinned till this class are almost desti
tute, being without anything to eat, and
bnt few jobs being offered by which they
oan earn a support.
Everywhere the creditor is pressing
his olalm. Everybody seems to have lost
confidence In everybody else. This lack
of confidence, unless re-established,
promisee for the ensuing year to be quite
detrimental to the farming Interest. Ev
ery muscle and fiber Of the financial
system Is strained to Its utmost tension,
and no mistake.
Bnt it is feared the worst Is yet
ahead. Hundreds of farmers have their
lands nnder mortgages to the loan agen
cies, and many of these will be maturing
daring the next twelve months; and, as
these agencies believe the opposition
their business met in the last legislature
are the feelings of the people, and fear
legislation by the next general assembly
that will make It impoeslblo to do bust
ness in the state, has made several of
these companies decide to make, no fur
ther loans and to close out their basinets
as fsstasthe mortgages mature. The
effect of these decisions have slresdy
been felt, and if the loans are not ex
tended, the next two years will throw
many farmers without homes.
Bnt the lien on politics has not been
foreclosed. People find time and some
times consider It a recreation to talk
politics. The third party advocates
who nsed to rnn for office on the demo
cratic ticket, and some of them ran in
the laat elections, and are still wanting
office, when the sensation first came
about gave the war whoop, rushed to
the platform and cried down with dem
ocracy—well we guess they’ve '‘gone
west" looking for an opening for an
office.
But there enough left, every one of
whom (F) are democrats, to discuss, and
some times to “cuss'* and “reonsa" aub-
treasury, Ocala platform, onr enemies,
eto. Some time* a fellow gets entbnsl-
astic on subjects of minor Importance,
like the tariff or the speakership, bnt he
is generally eclipsed by some free stiver
advocate.. Of course, all this talk Is ex
pected to develop something, andnp
here it has developed some of the possi
bilities for the future. Already three'
legislative possibilities,it!s affirmed, are
peeping from behind the screen. One a
talented yonng farmer, another a far
mer of more mature years, while the
third is an old-timer in politics; and all
belong to the Farmers’ Alliance, and all
more or less-are figuring prominently in
the county affaire.
