4 THE AMptlCUS DAILY TIMES-KECORDEJR: THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 1891. CHUBBY CHERUBS. THE BABY SHOW THE DRAWING CARD OF THE EVENING. The Ball Throng'd With a Cloud of Specta- ton-An Array of Infantile toroUnon— "Alat Thar Onto, tho Little Darling’.' Board on All gtdee-Th* Winner*.. A great snccessl So everybody said I The crowning feature of the fairl Standing apace was scarcely, available yesterday afternoon on the occasion of the baby show. Elbow room waa out of the question la the jam, and many of those gathered to see the baby show were forced to forego tho pleasure. It seemed that Americas had had a visitation of XillUput land, judging from the obubby darlings who were entered to compete for the prizes to be awarded to the prettiest After a survey of the field the boldest heart would have faltered before decid ing on the respective'oo net!ness of the little toddlers. It was like differentiating -between tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum, or the proverbial two peas. Here were the entries between the ages of two months and eight months Annie Margaret Miller, aged 2 months Sam Felder, aged 5 months; Annie Dodge Glenn, aged 4 months; Maud Altman, aged 6 months. From eight months to eighteen months the entries were: Mattie Lou Dodson, aged 15 months; Elbert Bivins, aged 10 months; Kate Lee' Worsham, aged 0 months; Willie Williford, aged 16 months; Philip Edward Childs, aged 8 months. The judges were Messrs. J. W. Fur- low, J. A. Davenport and Eugene An derson. The names of the babies were sup pressed and numbers were used. After puzzling enough to have solved the knottiest problem of modern civil! zation the three judges awarded the two prizes to Annie Margaret Miller In the first division, which was a gold dress but ton set. The little one was held up by Mrs.Bas- com Myrtck to receive the prize and clutched the jewelry, true to'the feminine instincts, tightly in its chubby firsts. In the seoond division the judges were nonplussed by the respective claims of little Mattie Lewis Dodson and Phillip Edward Childs, and as a solution of the question decided to draw straws. Ho. 8 or Mattie Lewis Dodson was the lucky one, but through a mistake in the num ber Phillip Edward Childs received the gift, a fine silver oup. In the consequent confusion the judges doclded to award a prize to both, although Ho. 8, or Mattie Lewis Dodson, drew it primarily. The twelve labors of old Hercules could not begin to compare with the enormous responsibilities assumed by the judges in the baby show. They deserve a niche in the temple of fame alongside of those who, for their country, "bled and died." A lively sale was kept up in the booths and the receipts are large. From six to nine a sumptuous repast was served, and fair bands dispensed de lectable dainties and delloaotes. The doll show, under the ausploes of Miss Sarah Cobb, whose efforts to make the fair a success merit unmeasured praise, was sn interesting feature ef the programme. Those exhibiting dolls and costumes by their own skill were Misses Vernon Williford, Laura Burt, Jewel Mlmms, Maud Matthews, Amxle Williford and Minnie Harper. The judge awarded the prize to Miss Maud - Matthews, whose doll costume was a dream of taste and beauty. The ladles are all requested to bring in fanoy work without delay. Another day is gone and the A. L. L fair soored another brilliant and signal THE MISSING LINK. XVERA GROCERY CO., .he Perfection Grocer*.’ r V • • Savannah, America* and Montgom ery I In fact, a* well as In name 1 Suoh Is the drift of rumors and Inci dents, giving them the color of faot and plausibility. Savannah's burning anx iety to extend the Sam road Into the city willqoon assume definite shape in the form and substance of rail and cross ties. The streets of Americas were teeming with rumors that a deal bad been effect ed between the officials of the Sam road and the L. and H. by whlob the latter promises or contracts to finish the six ty-five miles gap between Lyons and Savannah, landing the road within the corporate limits of the latter plaoe. A Times-Recobder reporter taokled one of the authorities of the Sam road, but be neither confirmed or denied the truth of the rumors, thereby strengthen ing the belief that the rumors are true. It te splendid nows for Amerioue and means renewed growth and bounding prosperity. It will quicken the current in every artery of commerce and insure success to every Industry and Invite new enterprises, multiplying their prospects of a thrifty business. In speaking of the rumors a special from Savannah says: “The newt that the Savannah, Ameri cas & Montgomery had, or is arranging to oombioe with the Louisville A Hash- vllle system, oreated much talk la Sa vannah to-day. The Louisville A Nash- vllle has long been quietly seeking an outlet on the Atlantic coast, and it has been well-known that the deep water agitators here had attracted and held the attention of the Louisville A Hash- ville people. At Montgomery, the Louis ville A Hashvllle, through its own Hues, has splendid connections, and that point is one of the terminals of "the Savannah, Americus A Montgomery. By building about sixty miles of road the latter line will reach Savannah over an Indepen dent route, and acting in concert with the Louisville A Hashvllle would give the great system entrance to Savannah and afford it one of the finest ports in the country. The row between the the Savannah, Amerleus A Montgomery and the Richmond A Danville, the desire for a port by the Loalsvllle A Hashvllle, and the easy manner in wbleh it can be obtained through an arrangement be tween these roads, gives color to the news of a probable combination. If the combination 1* made and the Savannah, Americus A Montgomery builds Into Savannah, It will be able not only to offer the shortest route to Montgomery, but also a direct route to many promi nent Southern and Western points, giv ing Savannah the advantage of strong competition to many places. This will relieve the otty to a great extent of Its dependence upon the present systems entering here, and cannot fail to be ben- eflelal in a business way. Businessmen are well pleased with the prospects that the reports Indicate." THANKSGIVING DAY. THANKSGIVING.
