Putnam, 6a., November 25,—Farm ers are about through gathering and some are sowing grain. The year’s operations wlU prove any thing bat satlefaotory to a majority of the farmers throughout this part of Ma rlon and Sobley counties. From a care ful estimate of the crops of some of the best farmers we know, we find, taking them as sn average, that the cotton crop baa fallen short of last year two-fifthe; but be neither confirmed' or denied the truth of the rumors, thereby strengthen ing the belief that the rumors are true. It is splendid nows for Amerious and means renewed growth and bounding prosperity. It will qntoken the onrrent In every artery of commerce and insure suocess to every Industry and Invite new enterprises, multiplying their prospects of a thrifty business. In speaking of the rumors a speolal from. Savannah says: “The news that the Savannah, Ameri cus A Montgomery had, or Is arranging to combine with the Louisville A Nash ville system, oreatod mnoh talk In Sa vannah to-day. The Louisville A Nash ville has long been quietly seeking an outlet on the Atlantic coast, and it has been well-known that the deep water agitators here had attracted and held the attention of. the Louisville A Nash ville people. At Montgomery, the Louis ville & Nashville, through Its own lines, has splendid connections, and that point Is one of the terminals of the Savannah, Amerlons A Montgomery. By building about sixty miles of road the latter line will reach Savannah over an indepen dent route, and noting in concert with the Louisville A Nashville would give tbo great system entrance to Savannah and afford It one of the finest ports in the country. The row between the the Savannah, Amerlons A Montgomery and the Richmond A Danville, the desire for a port by the Lonlsvllle A Nashville, and the easy manner in wbleb It can be obtained through an arrangement be tween these roads, gives color to the news of n probable combination. If the combination Is made and the Savannah, Amerious A Montgomery builds Into Savannah, it will be able not only to offer the shortest route to Montgomery, bnt aleo a dlreot route to many promi nent Southern and Western points, giv ing Savannah the advantage of strong competition to many places. This will relieve the city to a great extent of Its dependence upon the present systems entering here, and cannot fall to be ben eficial In a bnslness way. Business men are well pleased with the prospects that the reports indicate.” While skating I sprained my right arm ao severely that It was impossible to nso It The following morning I pro- enred a bottle of Salvation Oil and the first application Instantly relieved and eventually cured the Injured arm. He says: “They are in suoh reduced circum stances that they are forced to hnnt rab bits to keep the wolf from their door. This state of affairs Is the result of the low price of cotton and farm products, and the fact that every thing was swal lowed up to pay their debts. They have a dreary winter ahead unless they find relief." Boston, Mass., has an asylum for eats. SHOT FIVE TIMES. A.FATAL TRAGEDY IN BUENA VISTA YE8TEROAY. The City Martha! and Mr. S. E. Buttl Be came Involved in n Serious Fray Which Bcsnlto In Batts' Death—Shot Five Times -In Hat Pursuit With an Open Knife. Buena Vista, Gs., November 21.— [Speolal ]—A. B. Jackson, marshal, shot and Instantly killed R. E. Butt this after noon at 2 o'olock. Butt was standing In front of Hair A Crawford’s store when Jackson os ne up the street. Bntt ran qnlckly Into a batcher shop or the other surrounding preclnots. These sales though, are being kept up by the tenant and renter, but they have continued till this olass are almost desti tute, being without anything to eat, and bnt few jobs being offered by which they can earn a support. Everywhere the creditor Is pressing bis claim. Everybody seems to have lost confidence In everybody else. This lack of confidence, unless re-established, promises for the ensuing year to be qnlto detrimental to the farming Interest. Ev ery muscle and fiber of the financial system Is strained to its utmost tension, and no mistake. ' ~ Bnt It Is feared the worst is yst ahead. Hundreds of farmers have their lands under mortgages to the loan agen cies, and many of these will be maturing daring the next twelve months; and, as these agencies believe the opposition their business met in the last legislature are the feelings of the people, and fear legislation by the next general assembly that will make it Impossible to do busi ness in the state, has made several of these companies decide to make no fur ther loans and to elose oat their bnslness as fast as the mortgages mature. The effect of these decisions have already been felt, and if the loans are not ex tended, the next two years will throw many farmers without homes. Bnt the lien on polltios has not been foreoloeed. People find time and some times consider It a recreation to talk politics. The third party advocates who used to run for office on the demo cratic tioket, and some of them ran in the laat elections, and are still wanting ofiloe, when the sensation first oame about gave the war whoop, rushed to the platform and cried down with dem ocracy—well we guess they’ve “gone west” looking for an opening for an office. But there enough left, every one of whom (?) are democrats, to discuss, and some times to “ouss” and “recuss” sub- treasury, Ocala platform, our enemies, etc. Some times a fellow gets enthusi astic on subjects of minor importanoe, like the tariff or the speakership, bnt be is generally eclipsed by some free sliver advocate. Of coarse, all this talk Is ex pected to develop something, and op here it has developed some ot the possi bilities for the future. Already three legislative possibilities, it Is affirmed, are peeping from behind the screen. One a talented yunng farmer, another a far mer of more mature years, while the third 1* an old-timer In politics; and all belong to the Farmers’ Alliance, and all more or less are figuring prominently In the county affair*. The other businesses and profession! in Sohley county are to be heard from. Over In Marlon the friends of the prom inent sub-Alliance president are quietly feeling the pnbllo pulse to find what will be the chances of their man to go to the legislature next time. The origin of thp trouble waj last Saturday night.’ Bntt went into a saloon for a drink and being refuted attempted to toko it whloh brought on trouble with the bar tender. The marshal was ealled in and Butt at tempted to out him, but he was finally placed In the lockup. Butt remarked to the marshal that hit days were numbered, and more trouble was anticipated, which culminated to day In a tragedy. The affair It deeply deplored, as Butt was afflicted and Jackson is a clever and quiet citizen. Jaokson acted entirely In self defense, aeoordlng to the best Information I can gather. Jaokson was placed nnder ar rest at bis house until after the action of the coroner’s Jury, whloh will be Into to-night before a verdict can be bad.
