Tremendous Crowd In Attendance.
Mt. Vebsox, November 21.—[Special]
•A fitting day for the ghastly ceremony
which launched into eternity a sin-
stricken soul.
Cold, drizzling, dark clouds scurrying
across an angry sky ns If to move as fast
as possible from above the murderer’a
head.
People have been coming Into the vil
lage for twenty-four hours, and at two
p. m, to-day the hill on the side of
which the gallows had been erocted was
crowded with perhaps five thousand
souls, and In that waiting multitude
was beard no sound of load talking or
boisterous laughter, only a subdued awe
struck murmer arising.
The thusands who waited In bushed
expectancy to see the . life which bore
the Ineradicable stain of wanton destruc
tion of a fellow creature's existence,
taken in its turn by an outraged country.
“An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.'
‘Whosoever sbeds the blood of man, by
man shall his blood be taken.’’
William Blasb, col., who on tbe night
of Ootober twenty-four, in cold premedi
tation, took the life of Thomas Bone, at
two-thlrty o’clock to-day went forth to
meet hls.ilaker with the blood marks on
bis Immortal soul,
A pluckier criminal perhaps never
stood unde; the hangmen’s noose.
At two o'clook he was taken from the
county jail in Ifount Vernon and walked
under a guard of eighteen men armed
with Winchester rifles to the edge of tbe
tuwu, where the gallows had been bullL
A rope enclosure bad beea erected
around tbe spot, embracing about 100
feet area, and Inside this space were al
lowed only the officers of the law, tbe
physicians, tbe clergyman and repre
sentatives of tbe press.
Blash ascended tbe scaffold with a
Arm step, and faced the waiting multi-
tide, neatly dressed in a new black suit
He looked as if about to attend a picnic

Instead of being upon the verge of
eternity.
In a few calm words he addressed the
crowd, telling them to'take warning
from his fate and let alone all dime nov
els, gambling and whisky.
He Bald that he had made peace with
bla God and was resigned to his punish
ment—that he knew It pro* just and he
was willing to go as an example.
The reporter noticing the absence of
any minister asked him It be wished tor
one.
He said that he did, and Rsvs* Ross
and Barry were called from (he crowd.
They came upon the soaffold, and tor
tew minutes prayed and saogwith tho
condemned. When the religious ser
vices were concluded there were still re
maining to Blssb twelve minutes of life.
But this he said be did not want; to con
clude the exeeutlou aa soon as possible.
The sheriff, G. W. Dunham of Mont-
county, then approached and tied the
prisoners feet and arms. Not a muscle
quivered, and as Arm as a rook Blash
stood upon the middle of the trap door,
and even assisted by bis movements
Sheriff Dunham in pinioning himself.
Just before tbe minute for the falling
of tba trap, the sheriff drew tha black
cap over bis bead, and as tb^ second
band of his watoh pointed to the exact
time be pulled tbe lever, tbe drop fell
and with an eight footfall William Blash
left fonver his earthly home.
There were few struggles, and In
twenty minutes Dr. Morrison pro
nounced life extinct, and the mortal re
main! of tbe murderer were out down
gnd placed In tbe coffin.
During the interview with tbe con
demned man this morning, he told me
that he never Intended to commit a
murder though he had for some time
been planning a robbery; that he bad
filled hie mind with daring tales from
the sensational lives of Jesso James and
Rnbe Burrows, until he thought it wonld
be great to attempt such exploits him
self; that he realized the justice of his
punishment and was resigned.
The newspapers represented were the
Ameriohs Tihes-Recobdxb, Atlanta
Journal, Macon Telegraph, New York
World, Herald, Savannah Hews and Au
gusta Chronicle. Especially for courte
sies shown by Sheriff Dunham, Dr. Mor
rison and Messrs. Land A Bines, attor

Whereas, While the immutable laws of Supply & De

Whereas, While the Protectionists of the classes have
increased the duty on tin over 120 per cent., we the Protectors

Whereas, While with these grey and sombre mornings,
comes the winters winds, the biting frosts and shivering,
shakes, ’till one’s frozen mind almost congeals, and icy
thoughts displace warm regards; still then there is provided

compliments of the season to Artesian Corner Stores, and
