DON'T NEGLECT TOUR DUTY TO-DAT Let every Democrat turn out and vote to-tlayat the primary! * No act of citizeoahip U to directly connected with your material intereats aa the aelectlon of'your local govern- ment. Tbla is the A rat delegation of power Smm the aource of all power, the peo- iple; and what tbeae ald< rmou do, or owfrafa from doing, the next two years, •means money in or out of your pockets •more direotly than the acta of any other Hegialatiee or executive body on earth can mean It It Is largely a matter of sentiment who Is President, or Senator, or eren Gov ernor; but your prosperity la directly controlled by your city council, and Americas will prosper or decline very largely a* it la properly governed at hvnw. Scores of Amerious people went all nbe way to Atlanta a year ago to “ whoop •up'" General Gordon upon a matter of •sentiment: who may to-day refrain from going to the poll* acroaa the atreet be cause of indifference, and yet in so far as concerns your diroct and vital interests, there is no comparison in tho two cases. Let every man turn out to-day aud vote for the very best men, so that liere- .after you will hare uo occasion to blame yourself if the aAairs of the city should be administered by men solected to-day whose methods you arc not in s.vmpnthy with'. The Chicago Journal rays: "The in equality of wealth is not produced by the tariff. There is a vastly greater inequality of wealth in free-trade Eng land than In the United States. There the extremes of wealth and poverty are fnneb greater than here—wealth la con centrated In a fewer bands and greater amounts; the poor are Immensely mote □nmerous and are Indescribably poorer than here. But etlll greater extremes of riches and poverty exist In India, a free- trade country from Immemorial times, with a few men worth oountlesa millions of money and countless millions of men living on a cent’s worth of rice a day.” But it waa tariff—that Is, robbery—la the first instance that created a certain favored class in both countries, the landed aristocrats. Tho oonquerers con- Aicated the inheritance of the people and gave lAo their followers who are now the rubber, barons. Xow that the evil la done, free-trade in England and India can’t undo it; but the otmditlon of tho masses Isn’t as bad aa it would be if they had to live under a protective tariff aa high aa ours. Btiimm and pathatio is the story of tho faithful wife of Beresford, the ■nan confined In the Floyd county jell, whoso history Is familiar to the public. Faithful and unflinching, this brave lit tle woman has followed bis fortunes to a oall In the county prison. That cell has been her world for months past—a darkened world, with only her smile to brighten it. Day by day, night' after night, she has shared the gloom of bis prison with him, and hoped against de spair, nntil at last she Is left broken In spirits and health, Het case excites the admiration and sympathy of all, and her beautiful ebitraater has won friends for her among her husband’s enemies. Starvation In Russia, riots In China, revolutions In Chili and Brazil, starva tion In Mexico, war clouds in France, Germany, Austria and Turkey, plenty, pesos and prosperity In the United States and yet we are not happy. We bare nothing to complain of that the remedy does hot He In ourselves, viz: high taxes, scarce money and hard time* When the majority of the people wish to remedy these troubles, they can do It at the ballot box. This they should do or oetse to grumble. Even the Ben Antonio Express admits Is a bead-line over Its own Washington special relative to tbs speakership con test, that It “looks bad for Mills." That paper is printed near the home of the Texas candidate and it wouldn’t ha like ly to make suob a confession If It wasn’t true. Virtually there Is no competitor of Mills except Crisp. Consequently the failure «f Mills means the success of Crisp. Editor Charles A. Dana of tbs New York Snu arrived in New York from Europe on Saturday. Now let Pa Cleve land gather up hi* first bom la his arms and take to the woods. TROIM.K IN CHINA. It looks bad for foreigners in Chins. The ruling dynasty la of foreign origin itself, being Msntcboo Tartar, and of a different language from the regular Ce lestial heathen, and bears the same rela tion to the people at large that the “Shepherd Kings" did to the ancient Egyptians. That the royal family bolds Its place by force rather than by favor has boon ehovn heretofore la the Taeplag rebel, lion, Whloh would have been successful had not the royal forces been officered by English and Americana. But the same spirit of discontent Is rife, after a brief period of quiescence, sad the native masses are again in a state of insurrection. One of the chief causes is the alarm of the people at the progress foreign trade, oivillzatioa and, above all, religion in making under the tolerant reign of the present Emperor, who has a liberal English education, much of which he owes to Dr. Young J. Allen of Georgia, who is a naturalized Chinaman, and a Mandarin of tlie Em pire. The Ignorant and prejudiced masses are being Incited by the priests of the native religion, who are alarmed at tho power and Influence foreign missionaries and merchants are gaining under the present administration, and the most barbarous excesses are being committed against foreigners everywhere that the Insurrectionists have advanced. The situation is a very grave one for the government, for it looks the sympa thy of the masses; and the approach of tlie rebel armies towards Pekin is hailed with secret joy by the people, and the Emperor is by no means sure of his army in the event of a collision. The present uprielng is therefore based upon the hereditary dislike of the natives towards their foreign rulers, ag gravated by the tolerant attitude of the government towards the Christiana, and as It resolves Itself into a question of Uuddhitm and Confucionism against Christianity or Caucasslan civilization against Mongolian, It may be safely lie- lltved that ore many days the English government; backed up by other Euro pean powers, will take a hand In tho af fairs of the Celestial Empire aud main tain the Integrity of the present dynasty. If they do not, the fanatical Chinese hordes will sweep from the earth every vestige of Caucasian civilization and rajlgiou, along with the wreck of the Mantclioo Tartar dynasty. Is Amkiiica passing into the bands of aliens? Nearly 80,000,000 acres owned by aliens. More than 21.000,000 under the direct control and management of thirty alien non-residents of thirty for eign individuals or companies. In Mas sachusetts, there are 2,700,288 acres; j these thirty alien non-residents own land enough iu tl.o United States to make about too states like Massachu setts, own more land than some nations that support a king Many of the American dally papers have printed long and scathing editorials against alien landlordism in Ireland. Thus for there has been noth- ing In these papers about alien landlord- tarn In America, yet alien non-residents own twice as muoh land in the United States as Englishmen oara in Ireland.
