Americus, Oa., Deo. 4, ljM. It Looks like Crisp this morning. Look out (or a big streak of luck that always follows Crisp's political fortune* when the caucus meets Saturday. A monument to Father Ryan, the poet* priest of the South, has been erected In the Catholic cemetery at Mobile, Ala., where his remains were interred over five years ago 'Money talks. When a thousand dol lara are offered on Crisp in Washington, and nobody will take the bet even, it looks very much like doubt baa re soleed Itself into certainty. The Timer-Recorder will contain erery morning the very freshest and most reliable information from Wash ington, gathered by one of the most ac curate and conserratiTe correspondents at the capital The finance committees of the various expositions are now Investigating the sjneetion, “Has the exposition paid out this year?" It probably has; that Is to aay, paid out all there was In the treas ury except the deficit Three Alliance stores were charter! d near LaGrange about twelve months ago, and started out with a good capi tal, bacxed by good men Only one of them Is lefr. They tried to run the business with a profit of 10 per cent, hence their failure. The files of The Times Recorder will show that It has never fora moment wavered in the conviction that Crisp would be the Speaker o^ the next House. The necessary fire-works and the requi site Democratic rooster have been pro vided, and they will be used In doe sea The newspaper correspondents at Washington are nearer right, as a rule, than anybody else. They seek facts and generally get them They all believe that Crisp will be elected. N. B, Newspaper men are always right If they are not It Is the fault of the other fellow. The Democratic oauous to nominate a Speaker and other officers will meet to- morrow night and as a nomination by that body will be equivalent to an elec tion, the world will probably know Sun day moraine who will be elected to the Speaker’s chair when Congress assem bles at noon or Monday. The Montgomery Advertiser has six typesetting machines In Its oompoelng rooms, and la so far wen pleased with the results. Five of these machines set the “body’’ type of the paper and the sixth sets advertisements. The Adver tiser says they are the greatest thing In the newspaper business. The Washington correspondent of The Times-Recobdeb reports little Tommie Watson as flocking by himself, nursing his Infinitesimal Speaketablp boom, while his brother Alllanoemen are hard at work for Crisp. When the votes are oonnted out, it may be safely asserted that Tommie will get one vote for Speaker, asChe^s awfully stuck on himself. New Tobk society is In a ferment, be cause the Union Club . blackballed Dr. Seward Webb, a Vanderbilt son-in-law. This was done through "Fete” Lorlllard, the “Prince of Tuxedo,” and Ward Mo- AlUster, the “leader” ot the Four Hun dred, who don't like the Vanderbilts It may be said for Dr Webb that he Is a very deceut fellow, in spite of Pete and Mack’s prejudices. Tub Executive Committee of the Kings county (Brooklyn) Republicans have demanded that President Harrison remove Secretary of the Navy Tracy, be cause they say he does not "represent” the Republicans of that county. They claim that President Harrison-wlU com ply with their demands rather than lose their support In case be should be a can didate for re-election. The Georgia editors meet in Maoon today to resolve that Georgia shall be “in It” at the World’s Fair, whether or no. In this connection oomoa the news, very ominous to the success of this con vention, that the Macon Brewery has gone Into the hands of a receiver. And that too, just two days before the editors arrived But the bonne of true love never did run smooth. Sxnatux Calvin Buies, who draws his salary In Washington, as being from Ohio; and who shears the lambe In Wall street as a genuine native of that finan cial precinct, Is llkrl/ to be unseated because of his lack of actual cltlxenablp in Ohio. Census Porter was cute enough to work Brice's name Into the city directory as a resident of that me tropolis: and now tbs red-beaded Ohioan has to do some nice geographical ex plaining. HO* A HEW PI*SH. The Alliance land-loan scheme is not of recent origin. It has been practiced before and Is now being agitated in Eng land. What England is doing to enable Irish tenant farmers to purchase their holdings by lending them the necessary funds from the nations! treasury, at a low rate of Interest, on the security of the land, was done by Prussia as long ago as 1850, with excellent results. The 8tate established numerous land banks, which advanoed to the peasants the sums necessary for the purchase of the old landlord rights which were in each case commuted for a definite sum. The ad vance thus made constituted a first charge on the land, and was represented by debenture bonds for small amonnta. The owner of the land had the right to pay to their credit at whatever time and in whaterer sums he waeable, Installment* towards their redemption, but was bound to redeem them all fully Inside of fifty year*. Within a generation similar reforms have been carried out in other German States, and by their means large estates in extensive sections of the country have been transferred from reckless nobles who wrung from them the means of profligate extravagance by oppressing the wretched tenantry, to thrifty pea sant proprietors who draw from their small holdings the means of virtuous comfort by the cheerful labor of their own hands. Between national luaos of this kind and those sought by Senator Stanford’s land-loan scheme Is the radi cal difference that In the former case the totsl loan was moderate In. amount and made for the purchase of lani which re mained as security for the advance; while in the latter the money to be lent would be almost Illimitable In amount and could be used for any purpose for which the borrower might choose to employ IL—National Economist. Si’KC’tAt. Immigration Commissioner Schulteis recently disguised himself and made the trip from Liverpool to New York as a steerage passenger on the Ser- via, acd he makes a report which de mands serious attention. He was him self, In bis capaelty of steerage passen ger, an assisted emigrant, a certain so- called philanthropic society In London "assisting” him In the purchase of his cheap ticket. He saw hundred* of pau pers also supplied wltb their t'ckets by these philanthropic foreign societies. Still further, he brings charges against the steamship companies concerning the inhuman and outrageous treatment of these passengers, which ought to be In vestigated. It may be charged that his report is a sensational one, but Mr. Schulteis Is 'not to blame for immigra tion abuses and violations of the law that are sensational in character His charges are dlreet and explicit, and they should be rigidly Investigated. AMERICUS MARKETS, Wholesale Grocery Market. The New York Sun is posing as a comic paper In competition with I’uck and Judge. After Editor Dana baa soothed his ranoorous feelings towards ex-president Cleveland by a liberal out pouring of tho vials of his wrath upon Grover's bold pate, be drops into oomedy and gives a humorous editorial of a col umn length upon the name and fame of Statesman Abe Slupsky, an artist of won derful parts whom Editor Dana has un earthed out In the wild and wooly west. A* an Iron-leal writer the versatile edi tor of the Sun (that shines for all except Hayes and Grover) Is second only to Carnegie, who has made a fortune by trow-jr.-- * ~"' 4 ’ ' “ John RrAX, Steve Ryan’s father, has been in business In Atlanta for nearly fifty years and has amassed a large for tune In that city. In business It Is claimed for him that he haa always paid dollar for dollar and built up his fortune simply by bard and conscientious work and fortunate investments in real estate. The old gentleman 1s dieply affected by bis son’s predicament, but doss not see how he can rescue hiss without ruining himself and Impoverishing bis family, as the payment of the $181,000 necessary to obtain bis present release, he thought, would be but a prelude to the payment of much larger sums owed by his sou. The New Orleans States very sensibly says: “Toxaa has sent word to Con gressman Hills (bat If their presenoe will be of any assistance to him In the contest for the Speakership, she will send to Washington a delegation num beriofr 100 of her stalwart sons. It Is not likely, however, that he will need the help of bis brother Texans. If the majority of the Democratic members of the House think that he Is best fitted to lead them, they will elect him Speaker without any outside pressure. Delega tions coming to Washington in the in terest of a candidate are likely to do mors harm than good.”- The largest gasometer In the world Is now being built for a Loudon company Its diameter will be 300 feet, and the height 180 feet It* capaolt.v wlU be 1*,- 000,000 cubic feet and weight 8,280 tone It will take 1,200 toos of coal to fill It with gas..
