THE aMERXCPS DAILY TIMES-KECOBDER: FRIDAi, DECEMBER 4, 189j. I'V-- f \ TAKES LIKE WILD FIRE MILTON NOBLES A BICYCLE TOURNAMENT LOOMING UP AS A CERTAINTY. Enthusiastic Wheeln iwr ■ DlMU the Com' » Park WIU Choiw a. tho Plfuso Wheie a Yiselt Will The tournament» certainty I That’s (the way erects are shaping tbemielvee. Th* Tw*e-BnooHD**s suggestion that a bicycle tournament was the thing, caused a stir In blcyole circles. The wheelmen of the city are ardently enthuslsatlo orer the suggestion and will go to work to derise plans to Insure Its materialisation. In oonrersatlon with Mr. W. F. Mims, an expert and enthusiastic derotee of the wheel, he remarked: “If the bicycle riders In Amerlcus will only unite and determine to push the scheme for all that It Is worth, there Is not the shadow of a reason why It should not be a brilliant success.’" “What about a track?” “Oh that Is easily answered. For about one hundred and fifty dollars nice track could be graded and cindered or graveled at Ries Park, about one quarter of a mile In length that will meet fully the requirements of the oocaslon. Now there are about sixty-five wheel men in Amerlcus, sll enthusiastic In anything pertaining to the bicycle, and I do not hesitate to say that they will accord the proposltion.their cordial sup port and sympathy." “And the gate receipts, what of them?” “Of course they will go to the blcyole club under whose auspices the tourna ment will be held. Right here Is an un answerable argument to show that the .plan is not only feasible, but remunera tive as well. A bicycle tournament will be a novelty here and excursions could be run, realizing handsomely for the pro jectors of the scheme.” “Would any visiting members of the fraternity be on hand?” "Ob, yes, they would be invited and would contribute much to crown the oo caslon with the success It so richly merits. Messrs. Pohlll and Bantly and the wheelmen in Augusta, Atlanta, CO' lumbus and Macon would be Invited to attend Handsome medals would be of fered to the successful contestants and a generous rivalry would be aroused,” Now let the * bicyclists of Amerious form themselves into a club, or resurrect their old one and work together for the success of the tournament For Rheumatism, Malaria and Syphilis, P. A new form of horseshoes has been patented which can be quickly and se curely placed on a horse’s hoof and as quickly removed, no nails being re quired. The shoe Is made In two hinged parts, each similar In shape to one-ualf of the common shoe. Thin metallic shields at tached to the shoe cover part of the hoof, and meet in front In the Interlocking knuckles, through Which a pin is thrust to form the hinge. Around the upper edge of the shields are bands doubled inward at the rear to the project behind the heel of a horse and terminating in flanges whioh receive a clamping bolt for fastening the shoe securely. “They must have mighty queer peo ple in New York," observed Col. Blue- grass of Kentuoky. “Why so?" asked Mr. Dukaneof Pitts burg. “They are complaining of a water famine.”—Pittsburg Chronicle-Tele graph. We have more novelties this season than ever before. We Invite everybody to look them over. James Frickcr A Buo. Captivates tbs Audience With His Splen did Bandit ion ot “From Sire to Son." Milton Nobles was on the board* last evening and drew one of the largest bouses of the season. The “beauty and chivalry” of Amerlcus were gathered to see him in “From Sire to 8on,” and to aay that be surpassed their highest ex. peotatlons is but to express it feebly. He has a clear and vigorous conception of the requirement* of high tragedy, and his attitudes and varying expressions were wonderfully reallstie and thrilling. The scene was first laid In California, and all the rough phases of the days of '49 were portrayed true to life; from California It was transferred to Venice. The scenery representing the “bride Adrlatle” In her glory and picturesque glamour, la carried by the company and certainly emphasizes the effect and adds Interest to the denouement of the plot, whioh oconrs In the sky ohamber of an old palace. Here Milton Nobles and his wife ex hlblted some of their superb talents in tragedy, and when the eurtain closed on the finale, the audience were almost fixed to their seats. His support was most excellent, and we can aay without fear of offending the most sensitive taste that there was not an Indifferent actor among them, Milton Nobles' repertoire Is a large one; but he seems equally happy in any of his selections. Considerable Activity In Real t stata Cir cles Recently. In interviews with prominent real estate men yesterday the reporter learned that, although business circles have of late been laboring under some depression, there have In a quiet way, been several Important real estate trans fers daring the past few days, and pricee for city and suburban property are rang ing steadily upward. The prices paid for these lota, and the steady demand for them [proves most conclusively the progress and growth of the etty. : Owners are holding and buyers eager ly seize upon any opportunity to pur chase. The following are some of tbe recent ly effected transactions: Mr. Luther Bell bought the corner lot on Cburab and Strife streets, adjoining the reeidence of Mr. Eugene Hawkins. Mr. H. T. PLEDGED TO MEASURES LOOKING TO THE REDUCTION THE PRESENT RATE OF Ot Taxation In the City or Americas—The People Devolve the Stewardship of City on Three New Aldermen—Ae Effort to Bedoee tbe Tax Bate Looked for. Messrs. Blalock, Miller and Burt I Such are the nominees of tbe demo' cratic party! And by reviewing the files of Tub Times-Rxcobder the fact will stand out In bold relief that eaeh of tbe above pledged to measures of reform, auob will involve a material reduction in tbe present burdensome tax rate. The publlo will watch with anxious eye the drift of legislation In tbe council ball on this particular And vital Issue All three gentlemen expressed them' ■elves with candor as being heartily favor of a reduction of the tax rate, ■uob la feasible, and there appears to little doubt that a reduction might be effected, even for 1892, under certain conditions. They are all opposed at present street paving, inasmuch as a public im provement of this magnitude will un doubtedly thrill the pocket nerve of all tbe tax payers, If following so closely water, sewer and public building expen dltures. Some ten or twelve of our moat prom. Incut and Influential citizens were ap proached yesterday regarding the pro priety of a reduction in the tax rate and they were strongly in favor of any meas ures that the oouocl! might Inaugurate looking to this end. It is certainly a popular issue la Amer icas, as has been shown by tbe vote the primary Wednesday, and tbe taxpay. era will feel grateful to any alderman, old or new, who co-operates in tbe effort that will certainly be made to reduce taxation. Mr. G. M. Eldrldge will, no doubt, suoceed himself as olty engineer, as his management of his department ha* been entirely satisfactory to the city govern ment and the public. SPANGLED FANS.
