In his card In this morning's Issue, “Alderman" falls Into an error not un- natural to public officials, In that he con strues Tint Times-Itkcoiiiikh's publica tions showing that the people are call ing for retrenchments, as somewhat of a leflectlon upon the past records of the .city’s officials. The Times-Recoiiiikr has never said tliatthe city council has spent a dollar not authorized by the people. On the contrary, the reform that the tar-payers propose to Inaugurate, like •charity, begins with themselves. It is true that they voted all the improve ments mentioned by “Alderman,” and they have therefore bad to be taxed to pay for them. But It is likewise true that the people think they have gone far enough for awhile, and now they pro pose to retrench, until the city has a chance to grow up to her metropolitan improvements. The people want a tax rate of 1 per cent or less, just as soon as It can be ob tained with a proper respect to the needs and prosperity of the city; and they have nominated throe aldermen pledged to this retrenchment. This does not mean that I be retiiing aldermen, (had they remained in office), or the holding-over aldermen would'no) pursue a similar policy if tho wishes of the people clearly iudicated It. As the se’rvants of the people, the ex ecutors of the public will it is the busi ness of the the city council to follow in structions, be it to scatter or to hoard These times demandec noiuy, and llie people are simply meeting the conditions with which they are confronted. The present councilinen were elected under different conditions from those now pro- vailing, and the requirement of pledges from the new aldermen ia no reflection upon the past record of the old for this reason. So with the holding over mem bers of the aldermanic board. This ex pression of the people’s wishes for the future ia not a rebuke to them, but sim ply an instruction tor the future guid ance of ths whole body Tim religious editor of the Montgom ery Advertiser says: “The word ‘damn’ ia still In issue as to Its profanity, and the Supreme Court of Massachusetts once decided that the use of the word ’damn*' is not profanity. There is a story going about a Connecticut ciorgy- man who, in a sermon upon profanity, said that the word ‘damn’ might be rightfully used by respectable people as an emphatic expression. The next day be ohanged his mind on the subject when he met one of the feminine mem bers of bis flock who saluted him thus: •Good morning, Mr. : ——. That was a damn good sermon of yoij^tyest^rday r Thu 'German Emperor, having re formed pretty mueh everything else from A to Z, lias now taken In hand the Bourse. The Immensity of the young man’s Ego seems to require a new Ger man compound in ‘about forty-eleven syllables to describe it properly It he lives and continues to give twelve hours a day to the work of carrying on the universe, the gradual disappearance of the pronouns Icb, Mir and Wlr from the German language may be predicted. He will have absorbed and monopolized them alt, and verbs will have to be con jugated according to. him.—Jfew York Bun. The German army is to have a new field gun whteh Is said to be a great im provement on any thev have now in use. It is muoh lighter than the present wea pon, and Is said to be also more accu rate. A smokeless powder will be used In the cartridges, which are to combine the good points of both explosive shell and shrapnel. Germany ia congratulat ing herself npon this latest addition to her armament, tad believes she has now the most effective weapon that modern skill and Invention can produce. The President of the United States Is forbidden by a law of the land to leave onrterritory while holding bis office. Andrew Johnson did it once unwittingly wbiie'on a visit to Niagara Pails, bat his short tarrying on foreign soil was kspt ffom the publle daring the remsinder of his term. Bolton Don McLeod announces that he will spend ten days In Florida eating alligator soap, while the “Mscon County Citizen" will be managed daring his ab sence by Col. Eugene Willie of Ogle thorpe. The Don eoald not have loft It inbetter hands. Wk are very sorry to chronicle tho death of one of our subscriber!. He promised to pay last Saturday if be lived, but be didn't live. Our lot* ia Ids gain and we mourn ns those without | hope.—Camming Clarion. THK WRONG NAN INDICIED The people of Americus will no doubt bo surprised this morning to learn that the Grand Jury has Indicted Mr. A. T. Maxwell as a private citizen, for acts performed by yard employes of the Rich mond and Danville Railroad Company in this city, under orders issued to Mr. Maxwell as the ageot of that company by bis superior officers In Macon. Thk TiMxa-BxcoBDEH regards this as sn net of gross injustioe to Mr. Maxwell, sod cannot but think that the Grand Jury hat been Imposed on by certain persons who have personal spite to grat ify. This conclusion seems to be well founded, from the fset that the agents of mil railroads are aimllnrly situated In respect to the performance at times of certain necessary work ou Sunday; and yet a complaint ia lodged against nobody bat Mr. Maxwell; and that too, not as an official, but as an individual, and for acts that lie iicrsonally did not perform If auybody lias violated the law, It ia the it. * I>. Railroad Company, and not Mr. Mux well, but if only those ponons could lie indicted who committed the offense In this county, then the men who did the actual work were the proper persons to be Indicted From information gathered an to the character of the work done, however, Thk Timks-Rkcoiidkii does not believe that an indictment abouid have been obtained agaloat any of these employees, as their actions are regulated by their superior officers at headquarters. If the real object wore an honest de sire to prevent the violation of the Sab bath, no such, action as baa been taken would have resulted, and the investiga tion will no doubt prove that there is more of “pure cussedness" back of tbls Indictment than regard for the sanctity of thu Sabbath. AMERICUS MARKETS. WMmto Grocery Market. LARRY AND TOMMIE. Perhaps never In the history of jour- n disni was such a combination effected at that which is announced for the Southern Alliance Farmer, “Gantt »nd Watson, editors and proprietors.” Whatever lingering doubt may have existed as to the complete subversion of Editor Gantt’s Democratic faith by the dark powers of Third party heterodoxy, they now give way to the sad reality. Editor Gantt in lilsold age and feeble health actually phlogisticated. so to s|>cak, by the false prophet Thomas. Now, as the Southern Alliance Farmer ia the organ of the order of which Col. Livingston is tho head, and Wataon and Livingston are loading opposite move menta and represent diametrically oppo site ideas of politics, the question arises, has Gantt scooped Watson and rocon- strurted him, or'has Watson soooped Gantt, Livingston and the Alliance and carried them bodily .luto the Third pary? CiiANOKI.LOH Caphivi has evon more completely captured the good opinion and confidence of the people of Germany than Bismarek In the xenlth of bla popu larity and power. He made a speech in the Relo.hawg last Saturday, frank, full and fair, which, with its fine vein of humor captured that body and It rose with wonderful unanimity and did him honor. He declared that it was the policy of the Emperor to continue the education of the people by iessona of self-government, which could not fail to strengthen the bonds that unite them to the throne and to the monarch, who, Instead of being the absoluttonlst lie threatened to become, ia devoting him self to the study of European govern ments, and the result may be a change in the map of Europe.
