IN SOCIETY’S WHIRL
A WEEK BRILLIANT WITH SOCIAL
QAVETV.

Two very charming entertainment*
hare marked the past week a* a red let
ter on» socially.
Holiday night the America* Light
fantry fair went out In a “blaze
glory." There wa* a number of visiting
star* In the abclal flrmanent who added
lasterto the event, and rumor ha* It
that at least one matrimonial engage
ment wa* brought about during the fair
festivities,, and we may look for the am
nouncement soon.
■ How the customs of society have
changed in this respect. Thirty years
ago there wa* no engagement announce
ments, Then, a young woman denied
strenuously, up to the* time of her wed
ding, having any partiality for the young
man gossips accredited her affianced.
Years later the fashion was first Insti
tuted of the mother going in person to
all her friends and acquaintances, and
formally announcing her daughter’s be
trothal. In some cases the daughter ao
oompanied her mother. Nowadays, peo*
pie are informed by some near or dear
friend at a dance, ball or lea. It is then
published as a society Item In the lead
ing newspapers, and tbu* told to the
world. The publicity of engagements
carries a good effect with it, as I* shown
by the few broken troth* heard of in
these times... A woman, of oourse, must
expect to receive less attention after her
friend* know her heart Is given to an
other—but why should it be otherwise?
Is it not selfish to keep other women
from the happiness you sre now enjoy
ing of belonging solely to one dearly
loved, and looking forward to a content
ed home life. Be honest in your love
affairs, youog women, and in the end
you may have less lovers, but more true,
real friends.
The following beuutlful lines should
be heartily analyzed by all young women
contemplating matrimony, and the di
vine sentiments should be imperlshably
stamped upon the souls of the true, vir
tuous women of this decade:
Woman’s Query.
r>„ you • know that. you have ssked for the
costliest thing
Ever made by th* hand above—
A woman's heart and a woman's life
And a woman's wonderful love?
1)0 yon know you have asked for this price
less I lilng
As a child might have asked Tor a toy -
Demanding wkal others hare died to win
With the reckless dash of a boy? '
.You have written my lessons »r duty out,
Man-llkeyou have questioned me;
Now stand at the bar of my Woman's soul,
Until I have questioned tlwe?
You require your bread shall be always good,
Your eookt and your aborts should lie
whole; >
1 require your heart to be true as Uod's stun,
And pure as heaven your soul! •
You require a cook for your.mut on and
I require a far letter ihhi*:
A seamstress you're wsntnig for stockings
audsblrt—
1 want a man and s king!
A king for the neautirul realm relied
home, .
Andaman that thenutker,(tod.
Shall look upon as He did the dtst,
A nd say, “I t la good
■HNHr ami young, hut the rose will fads
Prom the sort young cheek one day;
Will you love me then 'mid the falling
leaves,
As you did 'mid the bloom of May?
Is your heart an ooasn so strong and deep?
Woman can never take her rightful
place among the Angela In whose divine
■mage she was created nutll I’eri-llke
she brings to the matrimonial altar vir
tuous aona, "the gift that Is most dear
to Heaven," and lu return th* richest
blessing Heaven can bestow on woman.
Hen hare no right to demand of woman
in the presence of Ood wbat they cannot
return full measure for measure.

ARE TOLERABLY GOOD,
But who wants a tolerably good egg ?
And there’*, a heap of trouble about a tol

This season has proven that there is one
line of stoves at least that is good (without
the tolerable) and they are sold at the Ar
tesian Corner.
The Artesian Corner Stoves are fitted
up with forty pieoes of ware, where other
dealers only give twenty-six. As usual, you
get more and pay less at the Artesian Cor

They don’t like it—the “tolerably good”
