Savannah Is enthusiastic over the proepeotebt tbe completion of the Sam road here, and the announcements In yesterday’s Morning News that It has been about definitely decided to begin work on tbe extension in February was eheering news to the business communi ty, which has been affected by tbe break ing off of traffic arrangements between the Sam and tbe Richmond ft Danville. “It will be a splendid thing for Savan- nan,*' said one business man, “to get the Sam in here, and the people ought to assist Col. Dawkins In his enterprise by every means In their power. The gain to the city in buelncu-wlll amply com- pensate for the expenditure of whatever money is necessary. If Col. Hawkins oomes here and offers stock in the Sam I don’t think be will have any trouble In finding takers. It can't help hat be a paying Investment, because Its eounec tion and arrangement with the Louis ville ft Nashville assures success. “The Louisville sod Nashville can get plenty of patronage from Savannah, be cause the merchants are a little tired of being run by one corporation in Just about whatever manner best suits its faney, Irrespective of bow their interests are affected.” Some people believe that tbe comple tion of the Sam Into Savannah will shortly afterward be followed by its lease to the Louisville and Nashville on similar terms to that of the Central by the Richmond and Danville. That would put the big system on an equal footing with the Itlohmond and Danville and would mean a good deal for thie port, beoeause the terminal headquarters with all its necessary offices would be located here, sod what was lost to the city by the removal of tbo Central’s offices to Atlanta would be more than made up by tbe institution of those required by the Lottlsville and Nashville. CoL Hawkins will be here from New York probably next Tuesday on account of the meeting of the Savannah Cun ■true tion Company, and no doubt be will be able to give the people of Sevan nah some Intereeting news about his road and its future.—Mo.ning News. The last report of the Minnesota State Food and Dairy Commission contains the details of the state chemlsta’ expert menta and analysis to determine the strength and keeping qualitlea of the various baking powders. Samples of he numerous brands on sale in this state were purchased and first analyzed to ascertain their leavening power. The itoynl Baking Powder le shown by the testa of both state analysts, Prof. Ebcr- manand Prof. Draw, to contain ,be greatest amount of leavening gas of the cream of tartar powders thus purchased end tasted. Hence this powder to offi cially ranked at the head of the list The report attaches great Importance to a series of experiments made to as certain the character, efficiency and keeping qualitlea of the powders, link ing powders that vary in strength or that readily lose strength before use are un reliable and will not give even results; besides, It It qn indication of the use In their compounding of improper Ingredl- lenta. These teste were applied to a large number of samples of different ages of the three cream of tartar pow ders best known In Minnesota. They showed tbe strength or leavening power of the Royal very mueh greater than that'of the others. The uniformity of strength of all the samples of Itoyal tested was remarkable. Its leavening power was practioal'y unimpaired even in the oldest specimens. The difference in the amount of leavening gae in differ ent samples of both tho other brands was so great as to seriously irapslr their usefulness In baking. As much as 24 per cent, toes was found in samples t% few months old.
