W. W. Thompson of Smithville, the

a regular peddling wagon on the streets
and will sell from one orange to 100
boxes.
Seven seedy birds of passage or cross
tie counters passed through Americus
yesterday. They showed a strong de
sire to remain here, but Chief Lingo did
not have sufllcient faith in their quallfi
cations for citizenship, so he suggested
that they move on, and they acted on
the suggestion.
The Richmond and Danville and the
Western and Atlantic railroads Installed
a system of through sleepers from Cin
cinnati to Jacksonville, going Into active
operative effect yeeterday, This is
splendid news for Americus .and means
larger transient travel from northern and
western points.
Americus now has synchronized time,
Ur. C. E. Dcscombes, ehlef of linemen,
of Augusta. Os., arrived In the elty yes-,
terday for the purpose of Installing the
apparatus at Thompson A Anderson’s
store. The wires were strong and all
connections will be complete to-day.
The time will be synchronized to - the
United States Observatory at Washing
ton, whloh Is flOth meridian time. The
clock will be self-winding and self-set
ting.
For several days past n movement has
been on foot In the city for the purpose
of organizing an association to look after
the poor of the elty daring the winter.
The amount asked Is only 23 cents a
month during the winter, and when we
consider the worthy object the associa
tion has in view the sum Is a paltry one
indeed. The community will then be
protected Irom. frauds and impostors
and really deserving people *111 have
their distress relieved.
Overcoats.
We are somewhat overstocked in over
coats, and for the next three weeks, we
will slaughter prices to reduce the pile.

Mrs. Pickett’s Death.
The death of Hrs. Elizabeth V,
Pickett at her home in Americus yester
day was not all unexpected, slnoe she
was a venerable age and In feeble health
for some time. lira. Pickett was widely
connected, and was a useful member of
the community. Her piety was slnoe re
and unassuming, sod the fruits of her
charity will be the noblest monument
that can be erected to her memory. The

granted farther time.
Tbe building committee asked for far
ther time in which to report on the cost
of placing lightning rods on city hall,
which was granted.
On motion of Alderman Devon port it
was ordered that W. H. Foagtn be paid
for treatment of one of the elty mules,
and the street committee was authorized
to place the mule recently hurt under
bis charge for treatment.
Petition of citizens on Brown street
asking that water main'be laid on' said
street was read and referred to City En
gineer Eldridge for estimated cost of
same.
On motion the roles were suspended
and section 201 of elty code of ordinan
ces was taken np and amended ed as to
read as follows:
