Slow, ly hit bead, iclth little jerks, bent for ward and bis bands nervously clasped before bim It was as If be bad bowed to tbe inevitable. Men about bim moved with sad faces and silent steps. Tbe sight of Mills in tbe hour of de feat affected every one In the room. There was not a tremor in the stalwart frame; be stood still, a statue of grief. Some one in tbe crowd moved. He could bear tbe painful sigbt no longer. Colonel Morrison stepped forward and Amerious, Ga., Deo. 11, 18il. Mills is now ebarged with a dicker with the Wall street anti-silver faction Such is tbe penalty of being great. Editob He.vuy P. Moose's sparkling and epigrammatic paragraphs in the Ma con Evening News have about them tbe odor of that “indescribable something” men call genius. Il.umigo.v made a mlseue on Ills mes sage to Congress. Tbe document was prosy, Insipid and rotten to tbe core, and suggested the mentel calibre of the "little man under the bat” In all of Its pigmy features. Hon. John T. Boifecillet is -candidate for speaker of the next bouse «f representatives of Georgia. His ora torical ability, parliamentary prowess and comprehensive knowledge of poll tics makes bim a formidable opponent to any other aspiiant for tbe position. Complaint Is made that Anglomania prevailed at the recent New Tork horse show, and that animals wearing English bang-tails and with a ebekney gait bad a decided advantage in the matter of awards. Of course, a horso with a wes tern accent in his whinsy' bsdn't much show. - We would very much like to see a late picture of Speaker Crisp in order to see what sort of s looking man he is. Our esteemed contemporary, the Picayune, presents him on its first page this morn ing as quite a handsome young man with a dapper moustache, and neatly combed locks brushed back from his brow, while the artist in the Timea- Democrat makes him appear as a stout, bald-headed man with a double chin. Either tbe pictures have been mixed in the offices of our contemporaries or Judge Crisp has outgrown recently bis hair and old clothes —New Orleans Dally States. New Totk newspaper circlet are Agog over the adroit and neat financial maneu vers of one Cludlus B. Lassell, a cheor- ful and picturesque scamp, a sort of smiling ^illian, who cultivated a mania for scattering broad-cast over the coun try bis [autograph—or alias—in shape of checks for valuables. But the clever Mr. Lassell made a false step when he betook himself to a hospital in the hope ofelemating surplua alcohol from his system, and In so doing he wrought bis own soul's undoing. He facetiously registered his address si No. 810 Madi son Avenue, the home of President Cleveland. He was unmasked, and though undismayed, be smiles through the bars of a cell in Brooklyn, where he can no longer ply his “shrewd avoca- cation” In exercising his ingenuity in passing or kiting his own ebooks that some “Nspoleon of finance" might well choose as a medal. gently laid his hand on bis friend's shoulder. At tbe toneb Mills drew him- self up, and taking Morrison's hand said “It’s all right Tbe other man has won." Then, with head erect, with a stride little more swinging than usual he has tened into the House, and walking up to Crisp grasped him cordially by tbe hand and congratulated him more warmly perhaps than any one else on tbe victory be bad won. Men In commenting on tbe way Mills took bis defeat called bim a manly man and have no rash things to say about him. Tbe story of tbe day—bow the battle was fought and bow It was woo ls full of absorbing interest Exoite- ment ran high in clubs, in all tbe de partments and In tbe hotels where bulle tins giving the ballots were displayed 1 There were crowds about the telegraph offices, and the bulletin board; In front of the newspaper offices held Interested throngs all day in spite of tbe rain. Great as was the interest of tbe general public it was nothing compared to tbe excitement that prevailed among the democratic representatives on whose votes the result depended —Herald. ON A TEAR. Araericus has gone raving, staving mad with joy over the nomination of Judge Crisp for the. Speakership. Col. Ingersoll Wade of Tbe Times-Rkcobdkr reached Macon yesterday astriue of the locomotive ' The engineer says he polled the whistle every step from Americas to Macon. He ambled Into the News office, bis face and hands be grimed with dirt and dust, and his touseled hair streaming in the fresh, Crisp atmosphere, and a strange, wild light gleaming from his erstwhile sad and perhaps pensive eyes. Sinklng’into tbe sanctum chair, his nerveless fingers grasped the pen and the following in discretion exudedr “Kit tbs sons and blow the trunieet. Get s big bass drum sndtbnmplt; Who don’t like It let him lump It— Orlsp has won tbe stake.” A bichloride of gold cocktail from Williams' exchange dispensary was quiokly administered and he soon re vived. He returned to Amerious by the next train and at last accounts was In a fair way for recovery.—Macon Evening News TKK GLORIOUS CONGRESS GRACEFULLY ACCEPTED. The Democratic newspapers of New Tork were practically solid against Crisp for the Speakership, with the exception of tbe Sun, which espoused the cause of no candidate, preferring to leave the matter entirely to the Democrats of the - House. But Crisp's election could not have been more gracefully accepted if the metropolitan newspapers had been for him from the first. These sturdy cham pions of Democracy, one and' all, hear tily congratulate Speaker Crisp upou his suocess, and unanimously predict for him a wise and conservative career in his new field of action. Our New Tork contemporaries express no vain regrets. The choice of the party is their choice, and they urge both wings of the Democracy to flap ' together at once. This is manly and sensible. It Is the good old-fashioned way.—Atlanta Constitution. ELECTROCUTION. Martin D. Loppy, wife murderer, en tered the electric chair In Sing Sing Prison at noon Monday and died in six minutes. There were three ooutaets of tbe cur rent, lasting in all nearly fifty seconds. Sights that were painful to unpractised eyes were witnessed. The man still breathed at tbe end of tbe .first contact. The electricity had evidently contracted his muscles, and as they relaxed when the current had left him tbe body seemed to move and be coming to life. At the end of the second Cuu'iAa.1 there wao a. uuticeable pulsation and In the second and third contacts were plain evidences that tbe current was burning the flesh at the points where It entered the body. Tbe autopsy revealed deep burns, seared marks, blisters and other disfig urements. In spite of these facts the experts de clare that tbs execution was successful and the man was unconscious after the first shock.
