Second Methodist ohuroh, East Ameri cas Sunday evening at the usual hour. The cotton /actors are all complaining about the low prioe of cotton, and only entertain feeble hoper that a reaction will take place in the spring. The railroad commission has directed the Savannah, Americas and Montgom ery railroad to build a depot at Lumkln, the same to be completed by June I, 1802. The superior court consumed yester day morning in the trial of Alice Mann, charged with stealing a watch from Mr. John Finch. The jury returned a ver dict of “not guilty” and the woman was released. The Amerlcue Club at their next meet ing, Monday night, will consummate plans for a brilliant german. This ger man will be but the prelude to a seasoq of gayety extending until way luto January. The Club held an Interesting session last evening at the residence of Maj. Speer. The remains of Mrs. James French of Richland were interred in Oak Grove cemetery yesterday, the Rev. Dr. A. B. Campbell officiating. Quite a number of sorrowing relatives and friends assem- bled to pay to the dead thosefsad rites that each and all must one day claim from the living. The Cordelean says: Mrs. Rosa Mer- shon, who has taught the music class this term with success leaves today to spend the holidays at her home in Americus. She has given perfeot satis faction, and we are glad to know that her valuable services have been secured for anotber term. The gavel presented to Speaker Crisp by hi* Amerious constituents and en graved by Flicker was sent on yesterday to Washington. Hr. Thompson seemed to have gootten into tqme little entanglement yesterday with Several merchants who thought that be should pay a license to sell oranges. Mr. Thompson, after con sulting legal authorities, decided that suoh a license is not necessary and pro poses to continue their sale at “oharity prices.” OVB NEW MINISTERS. Columbus Exebauces Bar Two for tbe Motbodlst Ministers Here. The regular annual session of the South Georgia conference of the M. church for 1861 is over, tbe appointments have all bsen made and the preaohers have returned to their homes; some say good-bye and some to receive the congratulations of their friends that they will remain at least for another year. No where, perhaps, Is there more Inter est felt in the appointments each year than here In Columbus, not only among the Methodist, but among tbe people other denominations. This year Colum bus has exchanged two of her preachers for two of Americus' preachers. Rev. A. M. Williams will go to the First Methodist ohuroh at Amerious and Rev. C. W. Snow to tbe Second dliurch, while Rev. J. B. Johnston of the First ohuroh will come to SL Duke and Rev. Robert F. Williamson of the second ohuroh will come to St. Paul. Rev. J. B. Johnston, who will be pas tor of St. Luke, was reared near Griffin, and spent the first years o( his ministe rial life in the North Georgia conference, serving at Deoatur, Griffin and Barnes- ville, and when transferred to tbe South Georgia conference, one year ago was sent to Amerious. Mr. Johnston is about S3 years old, and besides being a strong earnest preacher, is a most affable and cultured gentleman. His family, consisting of himself, wife and four children will be valuable acquisition to the citizenship of Columbus, and on their arrival will re ceive a hearty welcome. Broad street church’s pastor for the coming year will be one of the veterans of the conference, Rev. Robert F. Wil liamson. He is about 53 years of age and has served at various charges In the conference. For the past two years while he has been In cbsrge of tbe seoond church at Americas, has been living at Ellavllle which ts but a short distance from his work, and where he hss considerable farming interests. Judge Crisp expressed himself as very anxious to return home and greet his famllysnd Americus friends. The Judge has bad a perfeot ovation lu the way of telegrams, letters and beautiful floral testimonials from ttU parts of tbe country.' A Card. ' There passed through Macon a night or two since one around whom there lingers some publio Interest. I refer to ex-Attorney General Bob Ely. He has been In the lunatic asylum for several months, and was en route home to Al bany. Msj. Ely seems to be a sound man again, physically and ipehtally. He was at one time one of the leading law- yen of Albany circuit, and enjoyed • lucrative practice. He also held the high office of attorney- general of Geor gia. Hla financial downfall and mental derangement resulted from a series of misfortunes and bis condition at the time his friends took steps to have him committed to the asylum, was doe to such adversities ns are liable to come upon the strongest and best of men.
