THE AMERIOUS DAILY TIMES-RECORDER: SUNDAY, DECEMBER 13, 1891. ; r >5 ministerial muddle. V AN ENTANGLEMENT THAT RESULTS ) IN REV. L. F-SEEKS’ Withdrawal from the Co'ored Methodlat Episcopal Church-A Sematlonal Con flict Between Two Colored Shepherd* In the Method let Chnrch. Confusion worse confounded! Sucb is • thumb-nail sketch of the oc currences of yesterday in the colored Methodist Conference, which is now ln session here. Things looked lively for s while, and no one would have been surprised to have seen a few ministerial scalps tacked upon the front of the churoh. It came about this way: Rev. L. F Beeks arose in the meeting and exploded a sensation by denouncing Rev. J. H. Anderson as a “thief." This threw the august body into a spasm of excitement, and everything was in commotion in a couple of seo- onds. “It’s iioifloral," ejaculated a miniate rial brother in a stage whisper. Taken to task for his lurid language, by this' and k'ndred expressions, he went on to enlarge on his assertion. Anderson, be said, represented the Christian Index and Publishing House, of Jackson, Tennessee, and be had for warded him *2.76 for books. ( This money was sent by poatoiiice money order. From the money he has never heard ono word. He says he was convinced that Ander son had not only received the money, but that he also appropriated it v Rev. Beeks encountered strenuous de nial from his co-laborer in ministerial fields, who asserted that he had not re ceived the money. Into the courts. From spiritual courts he appealed his case to worldly tribunals. He appeared before Justice Oliver, stated the cate, and swore out a war rant against Anderson, charging him with cheating and swindling. Anderson was given a commitment trial last evening before Justice Oliver. Beeks made his charges anJ stated bis grounds for action. Colonel Blalock, attorney for Ander son, offset ted the charges-by showing that since the offence is alleged to have beea committed In Tennessee that the courts of Georgia had no jurisdiction ever It; also, that no direct or clear tes timony had been adduced by Beeks proving that Anderson bad stolen the funds. On the strength of these legal points, Justice Oliver dismissed the warrant. Still the curtain did not drop! The conference now soon had a finger in the pie. Rev. Mr. Beeks was atretebed on the dissecting table and his conduct was made the inspiration for some warm dis cussion. The conference seemed to direct its most searobing inquiries towards him, overlooking the necessity of first sound ing the merits of the case. This angered Beeks, who declares It his intention of withdrawing from the ministry and resting the justice of bis cause with an unbiased public. Such is the course events are taking in the conference and some sensational scenes are promised before matters are finally adjusted. Beeks says he will substantiate the charge he has preferred and that he will refer the whole affair to the arbitration of the courts of justice. “Alas for the rarity, Of Christian charity, Under the wa.” BE IS imiGIBLG Fall has come and with it the time to settle “that little bill" at Du.
