WRITTEN UY SOME YOUNGSTER.
At forty, if ever, the ladies know how
to take care of themselves, which is un
true of the vast majority in the twen
tie*. Perhaps at no other age ia the
Zbest type of woman more atrikingly
ibcaaUful. She understands bow to ex'
-erdse her gifts and charms in most
(effective fashion.
The grace of perfeot self-possession,
■ often wanting in young women, is hers.
.If she was diffident, awkward, and iuox
perlenced, contact with society has re
moved these Imperfections. If she was
> gushingly emotional, affected and too
talkative, she has corrected these faults
\. and la warily winsome where before she
-naae positively wearisome. In the nor
mal evolution of taste she has acquired
*tbe rare art of dressing faultlessly and
;ao avoiding the detracting infelicities of
-earlier years. Her selection of style,
color and material harmonize with her
figure, complexion and the occasion,
and she doesn’t look “a day over thirty."
The woman of 40 is Infinitely more at
tractive to men than she will be in later
life, when her fine complexion fades,
wrinkles leave their year-mark* across
her brow, silver threads her glossy hair,
her eyes lose their lustre and her step
its sprightliness. She may always be
agreeable, but never again so fascina
ting.
The woman of 401 She is distraoting,
delightful, Ml vine I Her society is a' solace
which rob* remembranoe of all remorse
and poverty of all pain. The spell of
her dark, depthless eyes wakens latent
emotions into ecstatic life, while the
music of ^er voioe thrills and fills the
sonl with joy unspeakable. Grace, good-
. ness and gentleness supplement the rare
and ravishing beauty of face and figure,
■ and her welooming smile is a precious
prize, beside which wealth and learning
. and kingdoms are but dross Luxuriant
nature, In the infinite plentltnde of her
blessings, has bequeathed to man naught
, elso so Intoxicating and incomparable as
the woman of 40.—Troy Press.
‘ ' There now seema every Indication

world comes nobly forward and gives to
the support of a nation of serfs who owe
their miserable condition to the over.

Little Tommy Watson is being most
mercilessly scourged by the press of his
native state, and In his lonely room at
the capital oity grinds hi* teeth In foam,

clippings concsming himself, forwarded
to him by admirlng(f) constituents. A
traitor to his people, a renegade from bis

tho downfall! which has overtaken him.
Under tho leadership of Hr. H. P.

blossomed as tho rose,” Hr. Moore’*
journalistic training being perhaps as
complete and comprehensive as that pf
any writer of the Southern press. Be
this as It may, the Hews In ita editorial

and soundness of opinion-which pecu
liarly commend themselves to the
thoughtful reading public.
Tns Judiciary Committee of theSouth
.Carolina Senate has reported adversely
upon tbs bill severely restricting the
sale of Intoxicants within the state. In
so doing they displayed wisdom and
judgment, for any measure of partial
- prohibition can only result in evasion* of
the law and a corresponding Increase of
crime, while the cause of temperance is
injured rather than bensfltted. >

Of late (here has been a rush of news
from all part* of the country, filling the
column* of the great dailie* with the
horrible detail* of bloody humao
butchery and brutal outrage. And the
careful obeerver will note the etrange

significant space among the news items,
Tt is the same way with train-robbery,
with fires, with suicides, with fraud and
embezzlement, some seeming occult
power urging men at stated intervals to
break the laws of God and country.
But the strangest one of all 1* the re
