A Yarn tvhi.-h tinea to Prove That Hark

Some Savage flrute. Don't tVa.tr Much
Time in Harking When Ont fur Hlood.
No one (mil spoken at the club for
qtioiit nn honr when ft racontenr roee to
the occasion. Laying aside his pipe with
■ look ot regret lie began:
•‘It's a popular saying that barking
dogs tlou't bite. Like other popnlar say
ings tliis is a fallacy and misleading.
Barking dogs do uotbite while they are
barking, but there is only one species of
canine that sneaks up to you and takes
hold without saying a won). -TIiaLis
the Scotch collie, which inherits its habit
of silent biting from a sheep nipping an
cestry."
“Story! storyr called ont the pres
ident.!
‘Story? ‘God bless you! I have none
to tell, sir,’" quoted the raconteur, re
membering his classics; “this is only a
memory of two dogs, accursed brutes,
that lived with an unfriendly man on a
sill, over which the postroad was laid.
This man, who was a Cain among his
fellows, kept two savuge mastiffs, who
not only barked but bit wheneverit was
possible. I Was courting my first wife
up there in ihe Cumberland mountains
In British North America where this
happened, and had to pass the house
regularly. I drove a blooded mare that
went like a bird, and the dogs were no
mutch for her, but it was very annoying
to have them follow me down the hill
for a mile or more barking and yelping
like demons. They would bark at the
stage roaches and run long instances
after them, lint the passengers were safe
inside and the driver and those on the
ontside were too high for them to reach.
Bnt I heaid frequent stories of their at
tacking men, and being beaten off with
sticks and stones. I asked why they
were not killed and my answer was
«hvn;> the same, a slirttg of the should
ers ami tile remark: ‘You don't know
the kind of man their owner is.' It
seemed that he lived aloue witli his
dogs, and people feared him so much
they dare not go to him to complain
or call in the provincial laws to help
,tbem.
A TEHItIBLE CHASE.
A crisis came, when ,one day 1 took
my sweetheart ont for a sleigh ride in it
low pnng belonging to her father, to
which was harnessed my own sure and
swift footed mare. It was a lovely day
and we expected to make a safe and
S id descent of the monntalh,.il dis
co of ten.or twelve mi lea The air
was crisp and cold, the sleighing fine,
and we skimmed up the ascent and
reached the lauding before we knew we
had started. There we were met hv the
dogs. 1 think it wonld have been lesa
difficult to have gotten rid of a pair of
wolves. I dare not give my mare her
head going down that long, steep declivi
ty on frozen snow, and the dogs, em
boldened by the cold or maddened by
retreated lashings from my whip, jumped
nt my companion and tore her cloak and
her dress in mouthfuls. 1 clnblred with
my whip awl beat them on the head, lint
they did not even seem to feel my blows.
Their great black and yellow frames
quivered tvith ferocity. The hair on
their barks stisal up like iiiuues; tiieir
eyeballs gleamed red and angry, uiiil ihe
noise they made was deafening awl dis
tracting.
Oil!’ I exclaimed, ‘why iiaveu't I a
pistol?*
Issik in the box under the seat,’
cried my companion, whose face waj
blanched.
I looked quickly, and found u rnsty
double barreled horse pistol of a make of
forty years ago.
Is it loaded?* I asked.
Yes, Imt dou't shoot. If you do that
man will kill yon!’,
- TWO SHOTS FIXED THEM.
“I reineutlrer thinking liow like a
woman it wgs to tell lue where to find
the pistol and then ask me not to shoot.
“1 laid the reins loose on the mal e's
back and away she went like the wind,
beyond my control now, aud I knew she
wonld never stop till she was n mile Ire-
yond the level gronnil at the foot of tlw
hill.,
••If the pnug held together; if nothing
made the mare swerve from the direct
line; if, in fact—if Providence kept an
eye on ns, awl the breeching didn't
break, we might escape breaking onr
necks, t linked back awl saw the dogs
gaining cu us, even nt that mad . gait-
then I took aim and fired. Bang! Bang!
There were two dark objects lying prone
on the snowy road, and as qnick ns she
enfold gather her feet nnder her my mare
stopped in her tracks. She was trained
to the tnre of a gnu.
“But wy comiwnion nrged me to hur
ry on, and we were soon down the in
cline and beyond the reach of recogni
tion or pnrsnit, and strange to my no
one bnt onr two selves ever knew who
killed Ibose dogs. We heard the most
marvelous accounts of the slaughter, the
weapon varying from a tjneen Anne
musket to a camion, hat dead they were
as door nails, awl their reign of terror
over. I imagine their owner did not care
to'venture ont to avenge their death. I
drove boldly past the bouse every day,
bnt was never molested or even Kiisjiecr-
ed. But I often heard their unknown
slayer praised still applauded for the
deed which rid the neighborhood of their
hateful presence."—Detroit Free Press.
KEEP YOUR BLOOD PURE.
One of the most frequent and insidious
causes of bad bealthik impure blood.
This disorder of the system does not
always manifest Itself outwardly by
sores, eruptions, etc., quite often tho
sorsdess is altogether Internal. Tho kid
neys feel sore, rite liver feels sore, tho
long* feel sore, and a decay sets it that
too often ends fatally. Itismuchmore
serious for blood poison to manifest it
self internally than externally. In such
cases neglect means deatb, lor the vital
organs once contaminated grow worse
unless they grow better, and they will
never grew better unless the proper rem
edy Is applied. There Is no remedy that
equals
Dr, John Hull’s Harsnparllln,
as a curative agent in cases of blood poi
son. When other remedies miserably
fall hi give relief, this remedy always
checks its terrible ravages, even In in
stances of scrofula or syphlllls, and re
stores the blood to a state of - absolute
purity. Large bottle (102 teaspoonfuls)
*1.00.
A physician of Waco, Texas,
writes; “I know a number of instances
of severe eases of blood poison beldg
cured by Dr. John Bull’s Sarsaparilla,
no other remedy or trea ment being
made use of, I consider that no better
blood medicine Is manufactured.
