HIS LAST NOTE
SUDDEN DEMISE OF AN OLD NEGRO
WHILE
In the Act of Rol.lns tbo iTune—lie Bo
loosed to tho Choir—The Bofrnln "Am I
Horn to Dlif Hla Last Tunc on tho
Earth.
On Sunday the congregation assem
bled at the negro Methodiat church were
■hocked beyond expression by a tearful
coincidence coupled with u sudden
death. • _
Old man Lewie Tooko la a member of
tbe chair, and haa always been a promi
nent figure In the cl roles of the colored
Methodist ohurob, regularly paying bis
devotion at the churoh of hie adoption,
and pouring out hla soul In psalms and
long meter tune*.
Ae was usual on Sunday afternoon at
four o’olook the old man was at hla poat
In tbs eholr, although In feeble health.
He evidently bad a presentiment that
his cup of life had been drained almost
to the dreg*, since the Saturday preced
ing he had paid hla landlady hla rent,
remarking, whan the hesitated to rg-
oelve It, that be desired abe should taka
It, alneo he was afraid he didn’t hare
long to Ure.
The old man’a troubled preaenUmenta
were too truly realized.
After a few preliminary remarks by
the paitor In charge, old Lewis raised
the familiar tune "Am I born to die.”
It was hla laat tuna on earth. He waf
aeen to stagger, gasp and fall prostrate,
and almost before the congregation real
tied the awful scene, death had aet Its
seal on hla lips and the refrain bad died
Into an echo.
The occurrence scattered consterna
tion In the ohorob, and the congregation
decided to bo dlsmltaod.
The old negro died of heart disease,
haring been in feeble health for some
time.
The coincidence was appalling one to
■ay the least and made a profound Im
pression on those witnessing tbe scene.
Lewis was was a good negro about
slxty-fire years old, with oonrirlal hab-
4 Its, however, and for fifteen yean was in
the employ of Mr. U. B. Uarrold, until
teoenUy, when be was employed In tho
warehouse of Mr. Lee Council.
Commencing to-night oar store will
be kept open till 0 or 10 o’clock each
night until Christmas.

A PURE BAKING POWDER.
A baking powder that can be depended
upon to be free from lime and alum la a
desideratum in these daye of adulterat
ed food. So far as can be Judged from
the official reports, the “Royal” seems to
be the only one yet found by chemical
analysis to be entirely without one or
}ho other of these substances, and abso
lutely pure. This, it is shown, results
from the exclusivo use by Its manufac
turers of cream of tartar specially refined
and prepared by patent processes which
totally remove the tartrate of lime and
other impurities. Tbe cost of this
chemically pure cream of tartar Is much
greater than auy other, and it it used in
no baking powder except the “Royal,”
the manufacturers of which control the
patents under which It is refined.
Dr. Edwara G. Love, formerly analyt
ical chemist for tbo U. S. government,
wbo made tbo analysis for the New York
State Board of Health In their investiga
tion of baking powders, and whose Inti
mate knowledge of the Ingredients of ell
those sold In this market, enables him
to! speak authoritatively, says of the
purity, wbolesomeness and superior
quality of tbe “Royal:”
“I find the Royal Baking Powder com
posed of pore and wholesome Ingredi
ents. It I* a cream of tartar powder,
and doe* not contain either Mum or
phosphates, or other Injurious sub
stance.”
Prof. Love's teats, and tbe reoent offi
cial teets by both the United States end
Canadian governments, show the Royal
Baking powder to .be superior . to ell
other* in strength end leavening -power.
It is not only the most economical in
use, but make* the purest, finest flavored
